Rights Respecting School.

unicef-logo-RRS - Applegarth Academy

Even though we are in lockdown we are continuing our journey towards achieving our RRSA Silver Award.

The Unicef UK Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) supports schools across the UK to embed children’s human rights in their ethos and culture. The award recognises achievement in putting the UN Convention on the Right of the Child (UNCRC) at the heart of a school’s practice to improve well-being and help all children and young people realise their potential.

The award is based on principles of equality, dignity, respect, non-discrimination and participation. The intention is that children are encouraged to make the most of their opportunities by understanding their rights. As a School Community we are responsible for promoting a rights-respecting environment and raising children’s knowledge and understanding that rights apply equally to everyone globally. Children should be given the opportunity to learn about the wider world and recognise the important role they have to play. (Fairtrade, Shoeshare, Food Bank Collections, environmental activities, etc)

At St. John Ogilvie Primary School we are very proud to have achieved our RRSA Bronze Award last year. We were due to have our Silver Award Assessment visit on the 3rd of April but we went into lockdown instead.

At school we promote a rights-respecting environment through

  • Assemblies are teaching children their rights
  • Children’s rights are displayed around school to help with understanding the articles
  • Playground Charters have been agreed, designed and are in place around the school
  • Dinner Hall Charters have been agreed, designed and are in place
  • The language of respect and responsibility is used by everyone in school (Ready, Respectful, Safe)
  • We show respect to our environment so that others in the future may have their rights.

During lockdown we have continued to talk to children about their rights and have provided weekly activities to remind children that every child has rights, whatever their ethnicity, gender, religion, language, abilities or any other status even in lockdown.

Primary 7 Monday 1st June AM

Good morning P7, We hope you’ve had a great weekend ad were able to safely see some friends and family.

As a warm up this month, here is a Daily Starter Activity to get your brain moving – complete the task each day as numbered on the calendar.

2nd Level June Calendar PDF

Here is today’s Literacy Work:

Your main task today is to use your reading pages to work your way through these Bloom’s Reading Activities. We’ll complete a different aspect each week and it will help to build up your reading knowledge and understanding skills. this week it’s ‘Understanding’.  This is a deeper look into a piece of writing asking you to interpret, summarise or explain things from the story.

Blooms Reading Activities – Understanding

This week, complete the two task which are highlighted and then choose 1 from the other 8 tasks on ‘Understanding’. You should be taking about 50 minutes to complete these to a high standard. Make sure you put in your title which section of the book you are currently working on.

White Fang PDF version of the book

White Fang pages and film letter This tells you which chapters to read each week – should be part IV now

https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/

This is an online audio book if you need a bit more support with the reading.  There does seem to be a difference between the audio book’s chapters and the pdf so you need to try and see where those overlap.  You log in using the ‘My Class Login’ button using these details:

Username: sjo primary 7
Password: White Fang            Capital W and F and space between words – sometimes easier to copy and paste

Today’s Numeracy Work:

For mental maths we continue with Big Maths Beat That. Try to improve on your score each day or if you are finishing ALL 72 correctly, try and beat your time each day.  Post your scores/times to Your Personal Learning Blog.

BMBT Learn Its Week 7

For the next few weeks we are going to complete some revision of work that we have covered over the course of the year.  It will be a chance to make sure we are secure with different concepts before the move to high school and help refresh our memories of things we haven’t had a look at in a while.

Today we are looking at Decimals – this follows on nicely from whole numbers last week and we’ll look at place value with decimals, rounding and the 4 number operations – being able to add, subtract, multiply and divide with decimals.

Mild Complete Exercises 1 and 2 Mild Decimals Mon

Spicy Complete Exercises 1, 2 and 3 Spicy Decimals Mon

Hot Complete Exercise 1, 2, 3 and 4 Hot Decimals Mon

Remember to post work to your Personal Learning Blog.

Primary 6 B 1-6-20

Good Morning everyone, I can’t believe we have reached the 1st of June already! I hope you are full of energy and ready for more learning tasks! Today we are going to do Writing and Maths.

Writing  Normally at this time of year you would be presenting House Captain’s Speeches in the upper area, your task is to prepare a speech but present it to a family member! Look at the PowerPoint which gives you hints and details  how to layout your speech. Try to think of three important qualities that would make you a good leader and include them in your speech. Complete the planning sheet before you start to write your speech properly. Remember it should have an introduction, three qualities(giving details of how you would use them in your leadership role) and a conclusion! Good luck and I can’t wait to see the finished articles uploaded to your PLB.
