P6 Weekly Update

Another fantastic week in primary 6!

Maths: This week we have continued to work on addition, subtraction and multiplication. We enjoyed working with a partner to play a game called cops and robbers using addition and subtraction strategies. We showed our determination during our problem solving activity by completing a 9 by 9 Sudoku quiz, we didn’t give up until we solved it! We also enjoyed our Big Math and tried our best to beat our own scores from the previous week.

Literacy: Our focus this week was to successfully up-level sentences. We used a range of openers, vocabulary, joiners and punctuation to improve our writing.  We completed a variety of active spelling activities and this helped us to remember our spelling patterns. We have started to read ‘Gansta Granny’ By  David Walliams as our class novel and found words to add to our word boost lists.

IDL: In order to improve our knowledge of volcanoes further we completed a comprehension activity about Volcanoes of the World. We also created 3D models of a volcano which help to show how each layer is made up.

Art: We created vibrant pictures of volcanoes using paint, oil pastels and chalk pastels. Here are some examples of our work below we would like to share with you.

Over and above: Well done to our over and above winner Niamh! Keep up the hard work.

Have a great weekend,

Mrs Roy

P1B Week Beginning 7th September

It has been another very busy week in Primary 1B.

This week we have been looking at number 5 and forming all our numbers to five correctly using the correct starting point.

We have been learning about the letter c and the sound it makes.  We know c is a yellow sound and it is a short bouncy sound.  The sound comes from the back of our throat.  We are able to recall words that start with c and also words that end with c.  We made beautiful crowns and practiced forming the letter.

In writing this week we wrote a sentence about what we can do.  Mrs Russell and Mrs Meikle were very proud of us.  We are trying to remember to use finger spaces and a full stop at the end of our sentence to show we are finished.

This week we had our first outdoor learning session we really enjoyed having the opportunity to practice writing our numbers and letters with chalk.

We have started to learn Spanish.  We can say hello and goodbye in Spanish.  We also found Spain on a map and discussed how far away it is from Scotland.  We also looked at the Spanish flag.  We can’t wait to learn some new words next week.

We have had lots of fun this week.

I like to play with the blocks so much.  I made a dinosaur. (Haadiya)

I like playing at playtime.  (Ksawery)

I like playing with the Numicon shapes and blocks.  (Sean)

I like running and jumping outside.  (Scott)

I like learning.  (Addison)

Have a great weekend everyone and we will see you again on Monday for another exciting week of learning 🙂

P2/1 Week Beginning 7.9.20

P2/1 have had another week full of learning experiences.  Here are some of the highlights your children have enjoyed:

Szymon liked learning about the brain this week as part of our learning about the body.  We found out that messages travel through nerves in our body the whole way to our brain.  The message travel very very fast.  We pretended to be nerves as we made a human chain.  After several attempts, we got the message to travel to the “brain” in 7 seconds!  Now that was teamwork in action!

Stefi enjoyed receiving a new jotter in maths that help us with our addition learning.

Millie has also shared that learning about the brain was her favourite part of the week too!  She liked it when we closed our eyes and our friend tickled a part of our skin with a feather.  Our brain made sense of that feeling and was able to tell us where on our body we felt the tickle.  It was a lot of fun!  Lots of giggling but lots of brains working hard!

Ismaeel liked using the teacher’s pointer during ‘Choosing  Time’ to go around and point to different things on the walls such as numbers on the 100 Number Square or letters on our Colourful Consonants display.  A teacher in the making perhaps!

Mrs Devlin’s highlight this week was today when we had ‘Free Writing Friday’ and read our fantastic stories out on our special Author’s Chair.  The children came in this morning to a chair decorated with red tinsel.  This generated much discussion.  Some thought it may be Santa’s chair!  The children got very excited to hear all about the purpose of the chair and many children volunteered to read their story out on it.  We hope for Mrs Devlin to add some fairy lights to the legs of the chair too!

I am experiencing problems uploading photos just now.  When the problem gets fixed I will back date with photos.

Hope you have a lovely weekend and are enjoying our Virtual Classroom!  Remember to check it out weekly for updates and homework will be posted there too.

Primary 5B – WB 07.09.20

Dear readers,

We hope you have had a really good week!

We began our week by congratulating our star writers! Well done  to them!

We also found out about our Big Maths, Beat that and Spelling scores and have congratulated the people who have worked hard to improve them!

On Monday we always change our class jobs and get rewarded when we perform very well.

This week we found out about our new Topic, which is going to be The Secret Garden, by Frances Hodgson Burnett. We were very excited because we think it will be very interesting.

In Maths, we have been learning about coordinates and have been enjoying it a lot. We  have also continued our learning on rounding to the nearest tens and hundreds.

Regarding Literacy, we have learned better how to use linking words to make our writing more interesting and less repetitive. Also in Literacy, we have been developing our reading comprehension skills and have worked on a text about a boy and his alien friends. The extract of the text we read was very interesting and mysterious…

In P.E., we have been getting ready for cross-country and every time we practise, we come back very tired!

In R.E. ,  after learning about the 10 Commandments, we have written down our own 8 Rules to make the world a better place and have illustrated them. They look very nice!😃

We have also spent the whole week practising our new spelling words and have become really good at them.

Some people, when finishing off earlier, got to start doing some SUDOKU and are getting better at it every day!

Every day we watch Newsround and after that, to show how good our listening was, we have to answer to questions from Mrs Valente, and get points or Recognition board sticky notes when we get them right.

On a Friday, we start our day with Big Maths, Beat that and also with our Weekly Spelling assessment and we try to do our best!

We would like to invite you to take part in our challenge of finding linking words, for example and, although, but, also, so, or…. We wish you luck!😂

We hope you have had a really nice time reading about what we have done this week and also that you have an exciting weekend!

Love from Primary 5B ❤

Primary 5A Weekly Highlights 11/9/20

Primary 5A have had another fantastic week with lots of exciting learning !

Literacy – Our new topic is based on the novel entitled ” The Secret Garden.”  Our class made predictions about the book on leaf templates and we will use them as part of our class display! We have also been working with a variety of conjunctions and learning how they can be used to uplevel our story writing.

Art –  As part of our Topic we created beautiful tree designs using water colours.

Outdoor Learning – Primary 5 had fun completing different challenges in the woodlands. We played knots and crosses using outdoor materials, made symmetrical pictures, created dens for a miniature toy and went on an alphabet scavenger hunt.

Learning Highlights w/c 7/9/20

Dear Parents,

Another week over and we are heading ever nearer to Autumn and shorter days but that allows us to continue our outdoor learning.  On Thursday we went to the woodlands and worked in two groups again.

One group’s task was to create micro-dens and we could be as adventurous as we liked.  One group even added in a slip n’ slide.

The other group were using flint and steel to create sparks which we all managed to do.  The next task proved decidedly more difficult – sending those sparks into some cotton wool to create a flame.  Congratulations to Isabelle, Zain and the others who managed to get a flame.  The other will have to keep trying.

In mathematics we were learning about grams and kilograms and had a little practical work too.  The estimates of how many children equals one Mr McGurn ranged from pretty accurate to pretty mean, 100 pupils to 1 me is a bit much!

We used this week’s writing lesson to re-draft our animal research to create tri-fold leaflets for our Rainforest display wall and have managed to get up some great examples, some pupils need a bit more time to get them finished.

In art, we were drawing rainforest animals and we have some completed ones now on display.

We continue to work hard and are coping well with our new routines and are looking forward to a real fire in the fire-pit next week!!!

Primary 7A – Weekly Update

What a fantastic week of learning we have had in Primary 7A!  The children have taken part in a wide range of activities and have done so with great enthusiasm.

There was definitely a clear winner in terms of learning highlights.  The children had such a wonderful time outdoors in the woodlands and this is something we hope to do a lot more of this year.  Here is what they said in their own words:

Sarah: “My highlight was going outside to the woodlands and making a piece of art.”

Connor: “Going into the woodlands and building a den in 25 minutes that previously took 5 months.”

Viktoria: “Making art in the woodlands and making a house in 25 minutes.”

Temi: “My highlight was making art in the woodlands with my friends and having fun.”

Here are a few pictures so you can see what we got up to outside:

Another highlight for many of the children was our writing task this week.  We made first drafts of letters to the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, to ask him to try and help reduce deforestation in the world’s rainforests.  We looked at the key features of a persuasive text and the children used these in their writing.  Many of them put forward excellent arguments against deforestation and were very passionate about trying to persuade the prime minister to do something about it.  Here are a few examples from their writing:

Hashim: I am sending you this letter because I strongly believe you should try to prevent deforestation.  If you do not act now, you could be known as the prime minister who done nothing to help save our planet.

Zuzanna: Firstly, it is estimated that around fifty species of plants and animals are going extinct in rainforests around the world each day.  That is one every half hour.  This is outrageous!

Megan:  Rainforest plants have been used to create life-saving drugs.  Rosy periwinkle from Madagascar helps children recover from the blood disease, leukemia.  If we continue to destroy our  rainforests, these plants will disappear and children will die.

Dawid: It is outrageous that an area of the rainforest, the size of a football pitch is being cut down every second.  It is disgraceful that the poor animals that live there may become extinct.

Next week, we will redraft our letters and post them to the prime minister.

In maths, the children have been working on multiplying using rounded numbers.  They have also been converting measurements between different units of the metric system, metres to centimetre and centimetres to millimetres.  We will be continuing with this next week by measuring different items in the playground and classroom, then converting our measurements accordingly.

We wish you all a lovely weekend.

Mrs Craig and Mrs Morrison

Primary 1A Weekly Update 11th September 2020

This week we have been trying hard to be kind to each other. We read a book called ‘The Magic Breath’, it told us about how to breathe slowly and think about happy thoughts to get us back to being calm.

We have been learning a new sound ‘c’ and doing lots of listening games to help us hear the first sound and the sound at the end. When we hear ‘c’ at the end we know we have to write ‘ck’ as they are friends.

We had our first outdoor learning session on Thursday. We had a walk through the woodland and learned about sitting at the fire pit safely. Then we went down to the playground and had great fun using the chalk to write numbers, letters and to draw pictures.

We have been learning to write the number 5 this week and also showed different ways of making 5 using our finger patterns and on a ten frame. Ask us to show you how we do this.

In writing we were finishing the sentence I can…   We did some fantastic writing and we are using the sounds we have learned.  Miss Stebbing and Mrs Newall were very impressed.

Here are some of our personal highlights:

Pola – I liked drawing.

Zosia – I liked drawing with the chalks.

John – I liked playing with the cars.

Ella – I liked playing the sounds bowling game and drawing.

Ollie – I liked going in the Woodland.

Joseph – I liked writing on the sticky labels.

Aiden G – I liked Activity Time.

Here are some photographs of our learning.
