P2B Highlights – Week Beginning 24th May 2021

P2B have had a super week!  They had the pleasure of having Mrs McLaughlin who they absolutely love (she tells great jokes) while I was off sick.  Here is what they have said has been the highlights of their week:

Ishani S enjoyed learning about the life of St Mother Teresa.

Layla liked learning about how to take care of a baby.  We are all looking forward to the presentations next week!

Maeve reports that she liked our lessons this week on dictionary skills.  Her and her partner Daniel decided to look up the word ‘car’.  They copied out its definition.  We watched as Mrs Devlin looked up the definition of a new word we had not heard before called ‘reluctant’ and we are going to try and use it in context at home and surprise our families!

Daniel liked our lesson on self-regulation strategies this week as we continue to explore our feelings.  This is a topic we have been revisiting over the school year.  We added to our class self-regulation box which is now full of things that can help us to feel calm and happy.  Some examples are: a teddy, a glitter ball, soft pomp oms, paint, a wand (to help us imagine a magical place), a dinosaur, wooden sticks, lego……… and Matteo and Layla wrote out a list of other reminders to read that include things like speaking to an adult, dancing, praying, deep breaths etc.

Szymon has been enjoying the 5 Times Tables.  We will be learning about dividing by 5 next week.

Freya enjoyed listening to the story ‘My Big Shouting Day’ that Mrs McLaughlin read to the class.

Aiden liked when a bee came to visit the classroom.  Apparently this caused great hysterics and our janitor had to come fetch it out of the lampshade as it was causing too much distraction.

Leah loved using the ipads.  The children were continuing their learning about ‘recounts’ and used their favourite app ‘Chatterpix’ to recount a choice of ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’ or ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’.

Mrs McLaughlin’s highlight was when she was so impressed with how much the children could tell her about recounts and the vocabulary associated with them.

My highlight was when I returned to work on Thursday and the warm welcome I received back.  The children were not expecting me in that day and they had a big surprise.  I was met with lots of, “I missed you!”  “I was praying for your sore throat”, lots and lots and lots of news about what I had missed and many air hugs.  Thank you boys and girls, I missed you too!

Learning Highlights in P1A 28th May 2021

This week we have been learning about odd and even numbers. We have been using tally marks to count in 5s.

We have been learning about words that rhyme.  We have been reading The 3 Little Pigs.  We did a huff and puff challenge.  We had to blow different items across the table.  Our partners had to tick a sheet to say how many huffs and puffs we did. On Tuesday the Wolf blew down our castle.  He left footprints all over the floor.  We made wanted posters to find the wolf.  He wrote us a letter to tell us he had a bad cold and had sneezed and that was why the castle fell down.  We built houses out of sticks, bricks and wood.  Miss Stebbing tried to blow them down using a hair dryer.  The hair dryer had ears on it so it looked like the wolf!

At outdoor learning some of us were making a fire, some were climbing a tree and some people were playing in the mud kitchen.  It was fun! We were finding sticks for making a fire pit.  They had to be the length from your finger to your elbow.

Some of our personal highlights are:

Ben – I learned about playing nicely with my friends.

Ollie – I learned how to climb trees safely.

Ruari – I learned how to make a fire pit.

Chijiakwu – I learned to count in 5s.

Pola – I learned about being nice to friends and being safe.

Kayla – I learned to share the space in the woodland.

Zosia – I learned about living creatures in the woodland.  I worked with Chijiakwu.

P2B Highlights – Week Beginning 10th May 2021

P2B have started to record the highlights of their week again on our school blog.  Here are our best bits!

Amelia like making wands for our ‘Magic e’ learning.  The wands helped the ‘Magic e’ to turn vowels into their letter names.  This week we have been focusing on words with the vowel ‘a’.

Matteo enjoyed writing a letter, recounting how he planted a seed.  We have been learning about recounts this week.  We know that they are divided up into three sections: ‘Orientation’, ‘Sequence of Events’ and ‘Personal Comment’.

Stefi loved watching her sunflower seed grow each day.  The light monitors had the special job of watering the seeds.

Millie said she liked when we were learning about stories that had ‘Good verses Evil’ characters.  We listened to the story the ‘Three Billy Goats Gruff’ and then acted it out.  We had some interesting discussion afterwards about what different choices the Troll could of made instead of wanting to eat the goats if he was hungry and was the Daddy Goat a good character if he used his horns to push the troll into the river?

Zac liked learning more about Mary, the mother of Jesus this week.  May is a month that we think about and pray to Mary more so than any other months.

Emily liked having music with Mrs Morrision and clapping along with the beat.

Mrs Devlin’s highlight has to be when we started our learning about Times Tables.  Our learning about this began with our shoes being thrown into the centre of the room and realising that we could not count a whole pile but would need to organise them.

Thank you to our two Lead Learners Jonah and Markuss.  They set a target of sitting more still on the carpet for everyone to work on.  We had some wrigglers this week but know that good listening means good sitting and good looking.

Learning Highlights 30th April 2021

This week we have been learning to use the Rekenreks to help us find the missing numbers in sums.  We have been practising sums like 2 + ? = 10.  We also used the Numicon to help us make numbers. We have been learning to count in 2s and in 5s.  We listened to some songs to help us.

In Health and Wellbeing we made a baby’s bottle.  We put in 120ml of water and 4 scoops of powder.  We flattened the powder with the back of a knife.

During Topic we made information sheets about an insect.

Our new sounds this week were ‘ai’ and ‘oa’.  We learned to write words with these sounds.  The staff were very impressed with our handwriting and we even got a sticker.

We need to practise being good listeners so we are going to try hard to follow the good listening rules.  Ask us what these rules are.

Here are some of our personal highlights from this week.

Pola – I enjoyed doing Spanish and I enjoyed doing our finger spaces and full stops because we were doing the ‘ai’ and ‘oa’.

John – I liked playing with Nathan in the playground.  We were playing Spiderman.
