P6A Weekly Update 25th February 2022

This week has been another busy week for Primary 6. Working towards our Rights Respecting Gold Award we celebrated Article 3 – The best interest of the child must be foremost when making decisions. The children had a lot to say on the subject as you can imagine.  Fortnight began on 21st of February and will continue until next Friday. In class we used ipads to research  Fairtrade and we created leaflets with the information we discovered. As part of our learning about Scotland and famous Scottish places we carried out research into The Kelpies visitor site and created Information Reports. We were able to use our writing targets to make these interesting and structured. We also used modelling clay to create our version of the famous Loch Ness Monster – Nessie. We hope to finish painting them next week.

In math we have been continued developing our knowledge of fractions, decimals and percentages. It is great to know that we can use our multiplication and division skills to solve problems and change fractions into decimals, decimals into percentages and percentages into fractions.

In RE we have been learning about the Stations of the Cross and some children were able to complete some writing on their Pope Francis Faith Award.

The weather has been very changeable and the children who brought a change of footwear greatly appreciated not having to sit with heavy wet boots and socks on.

Have a great weekend

P1A Learning Highlights 25th February 2022

This week has been a very busy week in P1A.  We have been learning our new sounds ‘ai’ and ‘oa’.  We are reading words with these sounds and even spelling words too!  We have written another information report this time about Apples.  We each got an apple to take home after we had written some sentences about it.

On Tuesday we celebrated ‘Twosday’ with lots of activities about the number 2.  We read a book called ‘Two of Everything’ and then started to double numbers all the way to 10.  We made crowns and had special colouring in sheets in Creative Zone.

As part of our topic work we have been learning about the lifecycle of a plant and the different parts of a plant.  We learned about the Fairtrade logo and coloured in our own one.  We are now going to look for the logo when we are shopping.  We watched a video about Fairtrade bananas and the main character was a super banana called Pablo.

P2A Week Beginning 14th February

Hello P2A families!  Here are our learning highlights according to the Green Table:

Lucas said he enjoyed coin rubbings.  The children have moved on to learning about money and the coin rubbings helped them to think about the colour, shape, size, number and images found on coins.

Nathan liked playing ‘Chaos Tig’ at PE with Mrs Lafferty.

Kayla enjoyed continuing to learn about Livingston.  This week we learned about all the public art on display all around our town.  The children recalled seeing many of these pieces but never knew what they were.  Now the know their name and what they mean!  They each picked their favourite one and tried to recreate it on paper.  Be sure to look out for this super art this weekend on Seesaw!  Soon we will move on to our new topic, Space.

Emily said she also liked PE.

Isabel loved reading ‘The Crunching Munching Caterpillar’ from our class library.  I shared with her how well I know this book as it was my oldest daughter’s favourite growing up.

Ben liked learning about the baptism of Jesus.  Next week we will continue to learn about the Sacrament of Baptism.

My highlight was the new class novel we started, ‘The Magic Finger’.  The children were so engrossed in it and can’t wait to find out what happens next!  There was much giggling at the start when they learned how the main character put the magic finger on her teacher and turned her into a cat!  You can imagine what happened next!  Yes, Mrs Devlin started to meow after 26 magic fingers where pointed at her. :-)🐱

P1B

A short week but lots of great learning in P1B.

We learned the word ending ‘ing’ and worked on building ‘ing’ words using magnetic letters. We read a great story called ‘Polly Parrot Picks a Pirate’ and used what we knew about parrots to write an informative report. We also learned the directions forward, backward, left and right to follow a pirate map to find treasure. Ask us how we remember which way is left. We particularly enjoyed using our learning to code a Beebot to move from A to B. We continued our learning of number words and ordinal numbers.

Today, we listened to the parable ‘The Good Samaritan’ and discussed things we do to help people at home. We drew around both our hands and drew a picture of something we already do to help and something we are going to start to do to help.

p1B have enjoyed lots of learning through play during activities/tasks: Lewis and Emily-Ann had fun playing a game of schools; Aaron and TJ spent much of the time building marble runs and junk models; Evana, Amy and Ciara loved painting pictures; Sofia, Georgia-Rose and Olivia drew some beautiful pictures; and Ishaan, Maja and Amariah-Grace enjoyed our role play area.

P3A WB 08.02.22

Dear readers,

First of all, apologies for the delay!

We hope you are all well.

This week we have, for the first time, written a collective Information Report with the participation of the whole class. Our Information Report is about St. Valentine and his life, since Valentine’s day is just around the corner. His story was lovely and we all admired his courage and determination. Since we still remembered the 4 different parts of an Information Report, we were able to think about what we would write for each of those parts and the final text was amazing!

Of course we continued working hard on our new spelling words for the week and ended with our weekly spelling assessment, always wishing to have the best ever scores on Friday.

Friday was also time to have our Parksafe Road Safety posters ready and we all did a great job making colourful catchy posters with fun and interesting slogans to draw people’s attention to Road Safety rules, including where is best to park.

Some of us have been challenged to solve tricky word problems by using multiplication and even division, while others are perfecting their knowledge and understanding on the 2s, 5s and 10s timestables.

For topic, we have continued working on our West Lothian display and learning various different things about this beautiful council in Scotland.

We have been working very hard together to get better as a team/class and to help others to make good choices, even when they are struggling with that. We believe that ‘Team work makes the dream work’ and also that by being kind and helpful we are going to become the best team ever!

We hope you have enjoyed reading about some of the many things we have done and wish you all a very happy Valentine’s day!❤😘

P2A Week Beginning 7th February

Hello P2A families!

Here are the learning highlights of the week from the Green Table:

Lucas enjoyed making Valentine’s Day cards.  The children worked hard to make beautiful cards for their Valentine.  We had much discussion this week about love and how we show love and kindness to one another.

Kayla loved continuing to learning about Livingston.  This week we learned about James Young and his discovery that oil could be extracted from shale.  We drew the shale mountains we see around Livingston on the ipads.

Nathan liked our learning about half past.  We discovered there is one tricky half past time that breaks the rules – half past 12!  Ask your child how this time breaks the rules.

Emily loved playing ‘shop’.  We learned how to give the shopkeeper the price using a range of coins.

Isabel enjoyed our Word Boost story this week called ‘Ingenious Jean’.  Her favourite word to learn was ‘amazing’.

My highlight has to have been the discussions about love and how our families show us love every day in their actions and words.  We also looked at weddings and how adults can show their love in this public family celebration.  Ben told us all about the important job he did at his parent’s wedding recently.  Thank you, Ben.

Congratulations to this week’s Hot Chocolate award winner, Isabel!

I hope you all enjoy the mid-term break and I will see you all on Wednesday!

P2B Week Beginning 7th February 2022

Hello SJO Families,

P2B have had a busy. In maths we have been looking at money, examining the different coins and the children enjoyed setting up our own little shops and taking turns pretending to be the customer and the shop keeper. In literacy we have been learning about different spellings of E sound and we had lots of fun making Valentine’s Day crafts and cards. In PE we have been learning how to play Bench Ball – the children have been playing well in their teams and practicing their passing.

Here are some pictures of the children being customers and shop keepers:

Highlights from the Blue Table:

Nicolas – I liked doing the Valentine’s Day crafts. I did two of them – the card with lots of the hearts and a 3D flower card.

Olek – I liked doing the shop and making the price tags. I liked being the shop keeper and getting the coins.

Rowan – I liked the shop too because I got to buy lots of things and I had so much money.

Sean – I liked the money the best and looking at the coins. Some of them are round and some of them have 7 sides, like the 20p. I got to be a customer in the shop with Alex and Aaeryn-Leigh and buy some lego and a book with my coins.

Daniel – I liked drawing the mountains on the iPad for our topic. I liked choosing the colours and trying to copy the picture.

Well done to Ella for winning the hot chocolate award!

Have a lovely long weekend and I will see you all on Wednesday,

Miss Lawrence

P1B Learning Highlights 11th February 2022

This week in Literacy we have been learning the sounds ‘ee’ and ‘oo’.  In writing we have been learning about information reports.  We looked at a picture about bikes and discussed everything we could see.  We made talking sentences about the picture and we completed a worksheet filling in the missing words.  We also wrote an information report about toy cars.

In Numeracy and Maths we learned about number names and ordinal numbers.  We played roll and write games to learn number words and played a game of Splat.  We played a listening game to colour in owls by ordinal numbers and used monkeys jumping on the bed to find out who feel of 1st 2nd etc.  We ordered ourselves and could identify who was 1st, 2nd etc.  We also matched the number words to the number.

This week was Internet Safety Day we discussed the importance of keeping safe when using the internet and we read a story about Buddy the dog who helped us learn if we are unsure of something we should ask our grown up for help.  We designed our own Internet Safety posters.

For topic we made a map from memory of our route home from school and then we made our own community map.

We completed our lessons on God’s Loving Plan and learned about the family of Jesus and know Mary is the mother of Jesus.  We also talked about our own mothers and drew a picture of them.

We worked very hard to design road safety posters for the Park Smart Competition.  We had good discussions about road safety and how to keep safe.

Congratulations to Blair who was this weeks Hot Chocolate Winner.

Well done to the Red Table who won Table of the Week’.

We hope you all have a great mid-term break and look forward to seeing you all again on Wednesday.
