Primary 6A Learning Highlights 31/1/25

Dear Parents and Carers,

Primary 6 has enjoyed settling back into their normal routine after the Burns’ Supper last week.

In literacy, we have still been studying Scots language and have looked closely at the poem entitled A Dug A Dug! Reciting it and performing it proved to be a lot of fun! This week everyone is going to write their own verse with a partner!

Numeracy, has included learning more about division using the written method. Our class have also consolidated the links between multiplication and division through looking at fact families. Mrs Morrison has been developing our knowledge of time.

Physical education has focused on developing fitness levels through a variety of exercises. Everyone did the bleep test at the start of the block and recorded their scores, this will be repeated in a few weeks to see if fitness levels have improved!

We had fun creating our own tartans using a weaving technique paying attention to pattern and colour. They have really brightened up our classroom.

Gods Loving Plan teaching continued this week to learn about the changes that take place to our bodies during puberty. We have also had fun discussing what we would do in particular situations and scenarios.

Our class has been learning about article 33 and how children have the right to be protected from harmful drugs. We are designing posters in pairs for our Rights Respecting wall.

Congratulations to Hannah on being nominated our hot chocolate winner and our reading champion!!

P3/2 Learning Update

A great week in P3/2!

We had Miss Mushet for the first half of the week and Mr Pentland for the second half! We all had so much fun!

Happy Chinese New Year! 🧧

We learned all about this and the festival of lanterns. The class even made their own lanterns by drawing and cutting card! We discussed all about Chinese new year and loved this learning! Bella and David even taught us how to say Happy New Year in Cantonese!

In literacy we did some reading comprehension about Chinese new year and focused on our listening skills this week! The children were learning all about active listening! We read and listened to stories, watched videos, showed our ability to be a quality audience to our classmates when they’re talking and carefully followed instructions. Daisy, Joshua, Ann, Roman and so many more discussed how much they loved this! I know that Miss Mushet will be so proud! ⭐️

For maths we talked about data and sorted data. We played a fun game of dragonostics and sorted out dragons into different categories, such as danger, height, weight and breath! What fantastic work we did! David, Tyler, Harald and so many expressed their love for this!

For technology this week we engaged in digital literacy. We worked on creating 3D designs on tinkercad. We even extended our learning of literacy (talking and listening) and went to show the P5s how to create 3D designs online! Very good active listening and collaboration skills when teaching P5 all about this. Well done! You were all so confident, empathetic and respectful to a class that hadn’t used the site before!

Congratulations to all the Koala-ty Students this week for showing kindness, being respectful and doing amazing with active listening!

Well done to Azmeer for delivering a fascinating lesson on the solar system and all things space! I learned so much from you! You used great vocabulary such as Mass and distance and were able to explain what these terms mean! Your class loved it! Well done!

A huge well done to Thomas for getting the hot chocolate at home award for demonstrating his resilience and kindness across the week! I’m very impressed! The whole class were so proud of you, they even knew it was you before I said!

I can’t wait to tell Miss Mushet how great you all were! I’m so happy I got to work with you and hope you have a wonderful weekend!

P6B – WB 27.01.25

Dear Readers,

We hope you are all very well and have kept safe from last week’s storm.

The highlights of the week were:

Reading Comprehension about Robert Burns’ life and career, to deepen even more our understanding of this great symbol of Scotland.
Reading, acting out, understanding and having a go at translating the poem A dug, a dug, which we enjoyed very much.
Through God’s Loving Plan, learning about the male and female reproductive systems and the physical and psychological changes boys and girls experience throughout puberty. We have had the opportunity to ask questions about, discuss and even act out different scenarios to explore the psychological changes and the ‘rollercoaster’ of emotions that our hormones force us to go through during this period of our lives, in order to prepare us to face them in a better way.
Regarding our Rights, we have focussed on Articles 24 and 33, and on how they say children are entitled to protection from the harmful use of drugs. We have explored good drugs, including the ones which help our bodies in case of disease, vaccines and inhalers, and the bad ones, the ones that can harm us. A distinction was also made between legal and illegal drugs and we realised that, although legal, drugs like tobacco and alcohol are also very bad. Another important aspect of our work had to do with the need to keep children away from all kinds of drugs and medicines and it was very reassuring to hear many of us telling about the locked medicine cupboards in our homes.
We continue working on division and as our times tables practice is essential for this everyone would benefit from working on them until they are experts!
As today is the first day of the new West Lothian Sumdog Competition, we have been given some time to play Sumdog and try to beat P7A, who actually came to challenge us! We have tried very hard and will continue to do so until the very last day, Thursday the 6th, when we expect to get at least a decent result.
Many congratulations to Markuss, our Hot Chocolate of the Week, who, this week, has managed to actively and enthusiastically participate in all the activities of the class! Well done! Keep up the great work!😀👏✨🥇
Congratulations also to Twinnie, who is our Reader Leader of the Fortnight because of how much she has been improving her reading skills!👏📚😃
Finally, congratulations to the Crusty Crabs for being, once again, the Table of the Week!👏😊 Good luck to all the other tables for the coming weeks!

Primary 2/1 Learning Highlights 31st January 2025

This week we have been learning all about the Chinese New Year celebrations. We look at China on Google Earth and we loved seeing the Great Wall of China and all the different buildings. For Word Boost, we have been reading the book ‘Dragons in the City’ to learn about all the different customs of Chinese New Year. We watched a video about the story of the Chinese Zodiac and enjoyed retelling the story using the puppets. Ask us what animal represents the year we were born. We have created a Chinese Restaurant role play area and we have enjoyed using chopsticks and cooking lots of food. We made our own dragons and some special red envelopes. We wrote a sentence using because to say if we like the lion dancer or the dragon puppet the best.

In literacy, we have been learning the sounds ‘qu’ and ‘y’. We have been reading in our reading groups and showing confidence in discussing the text.

In maths, we have continued our work on time and we have been focussing on digital times. We made our own analogue clocks and played some games on the Smartboard. We kept trying to beat the best time and Joseph managed to get 18 seconds!

In RE, we talked about how the Bible is a special book and how we must be respectful when holding it.

We have continued our work on our Local Area topic and talked about different types of houses. We enjoyed comparing our local area to Beijing in China when looking at the two places on Google Earth.

On Friday, we went a walk around the local area with the P1s. We had to direct the staff to go left, right or straight ahead and we discussed the different buildings we saw on our walk. We went into Morrison’s to buy some prawn crackers but they did not have any left so we bought some oranges instead as they are a lucky fruit for Chinese New Year. One of the staff in Morrisons was so impressed with our behaviour they gave us some mini donuts to have as a snack back at school.

Miles – I enjoyed playing in the Chinese kitchen.

Vihaan – I enjoyed trying to make a dragon.

Zenith – I enjoyed making my envelope.

Hallie – I enjoyed writing about the dragon.

Congratulations to Elsie who is our Reading Champion for this fortnight. She has been trying very hard during our group reading sessions. Also, congratulations to Vihaan who is our hot chocolate winner for trying to concentrate well on his tasks this week.

WB 27th January – P2 Weekly Highlights

Hello families of P2

We had great fun on Monday doing our guess the baby challenge. The children loved seeing themselves and their friends as babies. In literacy we learned to add ‘y’ to words and worked on adding connectives to up level our sentences. We worked on addition and subtraction as inverse, in maths this week. We enjoyed learning about Chinese New Year and made beautiful lanterns.

Weekly Highlights

Laaibah – I liked free writing and making my Pug.

Ellie – I liked learning our new sounds and making ‘ar’ words.

Leighton – I liked making lanterns for Chinese New Year.

Garvit – I liked ICT.

Everybody – We loved doing guess the baby from all of our baby photos.

Maja – I liked learning about Chinese New Year.

Rose – I liked exploring the Woodlands.

This week in P1

What a fantastic week we have had in P1, we have all been following our schools rules to be Ready, Respectful and Safe.

We learned our final initial sounds this week j and qu and enjoyed making a jellyfish craft and quail. We worked on bending our sounds together to make words and also read words than use these sounds.

Daniel – I liked the jelly and jam song.

In math this week we have been learning to tell the time to o’clock. We had lots of fun making an analogue clock and also playing the Stop the Clock game.

Alfie – I liked when Mrs Russell said a time and we had to put the time on our clock.

On Wednesday we learned about and celebrated Chinese New Year. We made a snake craft and also a Chinese lantern. We also made a red envelope and wrote some facts about Chinese New Year.

Cerys – I liked making a snake because it is year of the snake.

We have been learning about substances and which are safe and unsafe for us to touch or drink. We also learned about medicines and how to take medicine safely.

Our topic is ‘Our Local Area’ and we went for a walk to see what amenities around our school. We walked to Morrisons and bought some oranges, which are a special fruit at Chinese New Year.

Primary 2 Weekly Update – Wk Beginning 20th January

Dear Families,

We hope everyone is safe after the storm yesterday.

Here are a few of our learning highlights from this week:

In Maths, we continued to work on subtraction with Mrs Brand on Monday and Tuesday. Then on Wednesday and Thursday the children were working hard to calculate how much change to give from 20p, and sharing different ways they could make that amount.

In literacy we concentrated on sounds ‘ew’ and ‘ue’, making the ‘oo’ sound. We also wrote imaginative stories about our robots going on an adventure.

The children were very excited when they returned from lunch on Monday to discover that their robots were reading the classroom books!

We hope you all have a great weekend and we will see the children next week!

Primary 2/1 Learning Highlights 24th January 2025

This week we have been doing lots of learning with our robots. We worked in teams to order the robots in height order and then sorted them according to different criteria. On Tuesday, when we arrived at school, we found the robots playing in the area! We wrote a sentence about what they were doing on some special robot writing paper. Our buddies came down for a visit to see our robots and we confidently explained how we made them. Then we were able to take our robots home which was very exciting.

We have continued our work on God’s Loving Plan this week and talked about Mary the mother of Jesus and our own mum. We also learned about the parts of the body and labelled a picture correctly. We attended Mass at St Peter’s on Wednesday with P1, P5B and P7B. We showed respectful behaviour and the staff were extremely proud of us.

In Literacy, we have been learning the sounds ‘w’ and ‘j’. We were very excited to have a green sound. We have been using our sounds to spell words and to read and match the words and pictures. We have been reading books in Scots and enjoyed ‘The Tale of the Wee Mowdie’ and also ‘There was a Wee Lassie Who Swallowed a Midgie’. We have enjoyed watching Wee TV and joined in with the Shooglie Wooglie, a game about body parts in Scots and we listened to the story of the 3 wee pigs which was very funny!

We started our new topic all about our local area. We learned about what country we lived in and we are all able to correctly identify Scotland on a map.
