Working Like Scientists

This week we were set a challenge from Willy Wonka. He was inventing some new sweets in his chocolate factory and was on the look out for ingredients to put in them that would not dissolve in water. He had four ingredients in mind, haribos, orange flavouring, sweetener and chocolate. We had a discussion about the word dissolving and what it might mean before going into groups to work collaboratively to share ideas. We made a hypothesis about what would happen to the different ingredients when placed in the water and recorded this in the form of a drawing. After that we made an observation and drew what actually happened when the solid was placed in the water. We came together as a class to share our findings and shared some questions that we could investigate further next time.

On Tuesday we had our nativity performances and the children were absolutely fantastic! They demonstrated all of our school values and made everyone very proud. Our week ended with a trip to the pantomime to see ”Jack and the Beanstalk” which we all thoroughly enjoyed and laughed the whole way through.

Another Busy Week for P2/3

We have had another super busy week in P2/3! Our nativity is now next Tuesday 11th and with our dress rehearsal to the school on Monday we have been finalising our songs and dances.  On Tuesday we have two performances one at 9:30 and another at 1:30. We can’t wait to show everyone! Continuing on from the theme of Christmas and Winter, we had lots of fun making our candy cane reindeers for the Christmas fayre which looked fantastic.

In PE we have been doing athletics and focusing specifically on running. On Friday we participated in a running circuit where we brought all of our learning on running together. We had four different stations that focused on developing the skills and techniques that help with running. At station one we had shuttle runs and had to remember to swing our arms and push with our legs. We also had a hula hoop running challenge, a bean bag balance and a station with Miss Gill. P2/3 worked very hard!

We are continuing to read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and now have an invention room station set up in the classroom where we can create some sweets and chocolate of our own using different art materials.  We have also been learning about adjectives and have used this to help us create a character profile of Willy Wonka himself.

P2/3’s Week

With Christmas fast approaching we have been very busy in P2/3 practicing for the nativity. We have been working on our songs and lines and have shown great enthusiasm and confidence when rehearsing. Next week we will begin our Christmas crafts for the Christmas fayre on Friday 7th December. We were very excited coming into school on Friday wearing our Christmas jumpers.

In topic we have been learning about the foods that are produced, made, grown and harvested in Scotland. We have been enjoying learning about where in Scotland they come from and plotting the location on a map. Next we will be comparing the foods made in Scotland with food from other countries like chocolate.

We had lots of fun during French this week playing ”Bonjour Circles”. We listened to some French music as a toy was passed around the circle. When the music stopped the person who had the toy was to welcome the class, introduce themselves and then say goodbye. We were also very lucky to have some French ambassadors who came down from Primary 6 Thursday afternoon to teach us some French vocabulary and play games with us. We have been enjoying this a lot and it helps us to expand our knowledge.

In numeracy we have been learning about the place value of numbers and have been working on partitioning/ splitting a number into units, tens, hundreds and thousands. This helps us to explain the value of digits in a number and will also help us with our addition and subtraction.  We had an opportunity to explore the Dienes materials and played some games as a class to consolidate our learning.

We have been continuing to work on questioning and prediction in reading and are enjoying exploring both fiction and non-fiction books.

Primary 2 are Famous!?

This week in Primary 2 we have been learning what “Hot-Seating” is through drama. The children have had great fun becoming famous athletes, musicians and celebrities. We have been performing in front of the class taking on somebody famous’ persona.

We have also been writing more on the alien that visited Craigshill last month. The alien is still missing but through our writing lessons we feel as though we are getting closer to finding the missing alien!

P2/3’s Book Week

This week has been exciting for P2/3 as it was Book Week! Our week began with our assembly on Monday where Miss MacPhail shared some of her favourite books with us. We then went back to class feeling very inspired and excited to read our ‘drop everything and read’ (DEAR) time books. We also decorated our classroom door with a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory theme using different colours and patterns.

Carrying on from our Wonka topic we also wrote some letters to Willy Wonka convincing him to make our chocolate bars in his factory. We were encouraged to think about the structure and purpose of the letter, a description of our chocolate and why he should make it. On Friday we played a game of character charades. We were given a character from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which we had to keep secret and act out for the rest of the class to guess. The children were all so engaged with this and the class was roaring with laughter!

Our book week ended with P3 going through to Miss Duffy’s room where we were very lucky as we got to taste different types of bread from around the world. This was inspired by our read, write, count bags which contained an atlas. P2 read ”Open Very Carefully” by Nick Bromley with Miss Gill and then went on a hunt around the school for clues which the crocodile had left us. Our hunt ended back in the P2/3 classroom and we arrived to find some read, write, count bags waiting for us. We were all very excited to open them and explore the goodies inside. Overall we had a great book week!
