This week in primary 3 we have been continuing to learn about multiplication. We have been exploring different strategies to help us solve multiplication sums. This week we have been learning about arrays and feel confident in using these as a strategy for any multiplication sum. We enjoyed creating arrays using play-doh and whiteboards. We even took our learning outside and used natural materials to create arrays.

P3’s World Book Day
Primary 3 had a fantastic day yesterday celebrating World Book Day. We kicked off our day with a ‘Big Booky Breakfast’ where we enjoyed coming to school in our pyjamas, eating toast and sharing our favourite books. We then took part in Mrs Smart’s whole school book quiz in our houses, well done Young for coming first place!
We continued our day with various other activities to celebrate reading including paired reading with primary 4, designing new front covers for our favourite books, and making bookmarks.
We rounded off World Book day by sharing our learning in a whole school assembly this morning. It was great to see how other classes celebrated this exciting day.
P3s Update
This week in primary 3 we have been busy preparing for our upcoming assembly about the Vikings on Monday 4th March. The children have enjoyed creating props and showed confidence when learning their lines.  We can’t wait to showcase our learning and hope you can come along and watch.
During topic this week we had great fun going out into the playground to measure and draw a longship. They were said to be 21 metres long and 5 metres wide!
In writing we are continuing to learn about persuasive writing and the different writing techniques used in persuasive texts. We have been learning about alliteration and came up with lots of fantastic examples from well-known books as well as examples of our own.
In numeracy we have been learning about the 2 and 3 times tables. We have spotted patterns in both of these and are exploring different strategies to solve multiplication sums.
P3’s Weekly Highlights
This week in primary 3 we have been learning how to tell the time and enjoyed taking our learning outside. We used hoops, chalk and sticks to make our very own clocks in the playground. We then got to practice showing different times on our clocks and testing our partners.
As part of literacy we have all chosen a Scottish poem to learn for our upcoming poetry competition to celebrate Robert Burns. We enjoyed looking at each poem and highlighting any Scottish words. We made guesses as to what we thought the words might mean in English and then looked them up in a Scottish dictionary. We made lots of fantastic guesses!
Also this week we attended a multi-sports festival at Craigswood Sport Centre where we participated in a range of exciting sports. The football station was voted the favourite in our class!
P3’s Weekly Highlights
This week in primary 3 we were very lucky to have our first outdoor learning lesson with Mrs McCool. These lessons will focus on numeracy and maths and will involve taking our learning outside into the playground and garden area. We all thoroughly enjoyed playing games and going on a shape hunt, we managed to find all 12 shapes! Please note that our outdoor learning takes place every Tuesday and children should come to school dressed appropriately for the weather.
In literacy we have been learning how to summarise a text. We discussed what is meant by the key points in a text and learned how to identify them. We understand that a summary involves only the key points of a text and should be said or written using our own words. As a class we have made an anchor chart to remind us of the strategies involved in making a summary.
In science this week we learned about food chains and the flow of energy. We learned what the words ‘consumer’ and ‘producer’ meant and enjoyed sorting animals and plants into these headings. We liked getting to make up our own food chains and recognise that each chain must begin with a producer.
