Calling all knitters!

Some of the children at Murrayfield are making good use of twiddle muffs in school. Twiddle muffs can help children, who need to fidget, to concentrate and focus on listening tasks.

  • Do you like knitting or do you know someone who likes knitting?
  • Do you have some balls of wool you could donate?
  • Would you be interested in a parent/carer craft club at the school?

Please click on the link below for a pattern for Twiddle muffs.

Mrs Turnbull will be pleased to receive them any time.

P6/5 News

The class are beginning to count down to the end of term, however we are continuing to work hard.

In Maths, the class have been learning angles. We enjoyed hunting for them inside the school and going outdoors into the playground area. We were surprised by the amount of the amount of acute and obtuse angles we could find on the Trim Trail and on the trees in the Butterfly garden.

On Thursday we had a Zumba instructor into help us improve our fitness and dance. We enjoyed trying out the dance moves and working together to do the limbo!

In writing , we looked at how to effectively peer assess our writing against the success criteria.  We worked in pairs to examine the quality of our writing and discussed it against the Scottish Criterion. Many of children were very reflective and willing to take on the feedback given.  I’m looking forward to reading the next piece of writing they produce during Big Write.

Have a great weekend 🙂

News from P6/5 (from the week beginning 29/05/17)

Fantastic Flying Forces Workshop presented by the education team from The National Museum of Flight

Today we had a visit from the education team from The National Museum of Flight, in East Lothian. We learnt about the forces, which have an impact on flight and used new vocabulary – gravity, aerodynamics, streamlining, drag and thrust. The class had fun taking part in different experiments.

Afterwards the pupils decided they would love their parents or carers to take them to visit Concorde and the other aircraft at The Museum of Flight.

News from P6/5

Over the last few few weeks the pupils have been taking part in workshops about Music, Sound and Technology with a teacher called Miss Aslan.  She has introduced us to Makey Makey’s, microphones and Zoom recorders. We have been challenged to explore and create sounds and music for a short animation. We have been having lots of fun using  every day objects and our voices to create sounds.  We have also become ‘experts ‘ in setting up and recording equipment. Sadly next week is our last input from Miss Aslan, however we can’t wait to watch and listen to our completed animation. We hope to be able to share our our efforts with parents and carers soon.

In Maths we have continued to focus on handling data and learning to use the vocabulary of probability.  We used the smart board to play a fun game called ‘Take A Chance’, before explaining reasons for our choices. In mental maths we have continued to look at developing our multiplication strategies. On Wednesday, Mrs Waugh, Ms Macrae and Mrs Sneddon came into watch our Number Talks lesson.  They enjoyed supporting us to share strategies used to find solutions to the questions.

In class, we have taken time to discuss the events which occurred earlier in the week in Manchester. We held a minutes silence to remember and support people who have died or have been injured.  We had a great discussion on the event, sharing our feelings and worries about the world we live in.

In Gym this week we took advantage of the amazing sunshine to improve and develop skills in track and field events, such as relay racing, hammer throw, shot putt and hurdles.  We are all looking forward to sports days on Friday 2nd June.

Have a great weekend.  Hope the sun keeps shining! Remember to stay safe by wearing sun cream and a hat 🙂

News from P6/5

This week Primary 6/5 have been working hard to encourage the pupils and staff in the school to raise money for Red Nose Day.  Red Nose Day is part of the Comic Charity, which helps tackle poverty and social injustice in the UK and in Africa. P6/5 worked together to organise competitions, film stars for a school Joke-a-thon and rehearse for their class assembly.

Well done to Dean Burt for winning the Find the Nose competition and to everyone who made us laugh telling a joke. The winners of the Design A Nose competition will be announced next week. The class also held a wear red day for their assembly.

During the assembly, P6/5 shared information about the reasons for helping to support Red Nose Day and sang a great rendition of the official song, Put a nose on it!  Thank you to everyone for their donations.  Once the money is counted we will upload the total amount raised.  Every penny helps to change lives for the better!

Have a great weekend 🙂

P7/6 Blog Friday 2nd February 2017

This week in P7/6 we:

  • Went to the Community Centre with Community Action Blackburn (CAB)  to interview people working for all sorts of jobs.  It was really interesting.
  • We went on the laptops to go on a site called Education City.  We were playing games with money and decimals and practising our skills.
  • We had a homework task to build old style crofts from the Highlands that were in Scotland between 1700-1800.  They are amazing.  We will put up some photos to show you the terrific amount of effort that has been put in.
  • We also painted stones to make different colorful patterns and they are going to be put out in the school garden.
  • We all created our own hand-written homework debates and then typed them into Word.
  • We all tried our hands at a game of Scrabble.
  • We were also learning about decimals using Numicon blocks.
  • Lastly we all learned about probability in our SHM 6 books

Thank you for taking the time to read our school blog, and we will write to you next week. 🙂

P6/5 News

It has been a few weeks since Primary 6/5 last posted to the blog, however the class have been very busy. This week started with the CAB Careers Conference for Primary Six pupils, where they had the opportunity to meet a variety of people and interview them about their job.  All of the pupils enjoyed meeting the invited guests and asked fantastic questions.  Hopefully they feel inspired to work hard throughout their education and strive to achieve their dream job!

Primary 6/5 went on their second class trip of the year on Tuesday to The Water of Leith Conservation Trust Centre to learn more about the Jacobites.  We were very grateful we went on Tuesday, rather than Thursday when storm Doris hit most of the country!

In the classroom, the children enjoyed looking at objects linked to the Jacobites, which included Muskets, wolves, Cockades and masks of key figures. The second part involved going outdoors to build shelters made from leaves and branches; and creating frieze frames in groups to demonstrate what life what like for the Jacobites camping in Edinburgh waiting on orders from Bonnie Prince Charlie.  The trip was exciting and a great experience for all.

Back in our P6/5 classroom, we have been concentrating on writing personal recounts of our experiences.  The writing in the classroom continues to develop well, with most children succeeding to producing extended pieces and trying hard to organise events into paragraphs.  I’m sure many of our parents and carers were pleased with our writing efforts when they looked at it during the Sharing the Learning session just before February break, and those who were unable to manage, will be surprised with their child’s effort and progress when they come along to parents consultations in March.  Big Talk homework is helping many pupils become more creative and confident in tackling Big Write on a weekly basis.

In Maths, each of the groups has been focusing on addition and encouraging pupils to discuss a range of strategies to use for solving problems.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Word’s out!

P7-6 learned the joy of playing Scrabble this week during our spelling lessons.  We had so much fun working together in small groups, finding out about the rules, challenging ourselves to come up with some quite impressive words at times.  It must have been fun, because almost every day since,

groups of children came to ask when were going to play again.  Mrs Millar finally caved in and we had a second round on Wednesday.  It was really lovely to see the teamwork, co-operation and most importantly, the fun that everyone had while they were learning.

We began to link fractions to decimals in Maths and did some Maths Talk activities where we found out people’s different strategies for multiplying two 2-digit numbers together.  It was very interesting to see how differently we all think.  Alyssa and Logan learned a new game where they built up groups of tens and hundreds and exchanged pieces with the friendly banker, Logan, to see who could collect the highest number.

Preparations are still underway for the P7 transition Ceilidh at Bathgate Academy and we have some talented dancers, a few interesting moves and most children now dancing in the same direction.

Handwriting and presentation is still a key priority in our class.  I would be really grateful if you would make sure that your child comes to school prepared with a pencil, rubber and ruler.  Also, they should all have a pair of indoor gym shoes to wear, and an outdoor pair of gym shoes for outdoor PE.  Shoes which are loose, too small or broken will be sent home as early as possible to enable you to replace them.  Thank you for your support with this.

We are trying to work alongside the other classes in our school to promote healthy snacks at break time.  In class, children are allowed to drink water.  If you wish to purchase milk for your child to have each day, please speak to Mrs Strachan in the office.

As well as our class novels, each child selected a personal reader which they agreed to complete before Christmas.  Next week, as part of their homework, they will be asked to complete a book report about this book.  Your support is much appreciated in ensuring that your child completes their homework and returns it on time.

We are currently working on an argumentative piece of writing about the pros and cons of homework.  Thank you for getting involved in the Big Talk homework in preparation for this.  It is a very controversial argument and P7-6 have presented many different viewpoints so far.  I am sure you will look forward to reading their final drafts.

KEEPING MURRAYFIELD HEALTHY

healthy-kids

This session we will be encouraging all children to stay as healthy as possible and to make the right healthy choices.  We will be focusing on encouraging and promoting healthy eating across the school.  Here is how you can help your child:

*eat breakfast – remember we have a Breakfast Club Monday to Friday from 8.15am.  A Murrayfield breakfast includes toast with flora spread and/or jam, choice of low sugar cereal with milk, water or low sugar apple or orange fruit juice

*choose healthier snacks – fruit, low salt or sugar snacks, try to keep sweets and crisps to a minimum as these snacks tend to be low in nutrients and high calories

*drink water – we encourage all pupils to drink water during class time and have (non-fizzy) juice for lunch or morning break.

*grow your own – all classes have access to our school garden where a range of vegetables and fruits are grown.  Maybe you could try to grow some of your own in pots at home

*eat together – we encourage all pupils to socialise with their peers during their lunch.  Sitting eating a meal together is a great way of finding out about your child’s day

Please let us know if you have any tips on how to encourage children to make healthier food choices.  Perhaps you have a great packed lunch idea or healthy snack suggestions.  We would love to hear about your ideas.
