Eat your heart out, Gustave Eiffel!

Well done Callen Johnston, who ate his breakfast at the Breakfast Club and then moved on to create his own Statue of Liberty, using ZOOB construction pieces!  Here he is, proudly displaying his work.   For those of you who didn’t know, Gustave Eiffel also helped to build the Statue of Liberty in New York.  Callen is showing great promise as a future engineer.

If you would like to come along to Breakfast Club and take part in making exciting models, building with Lego, catching up with friends or taking part in our Wednesday morning exercise group, come along and join us at 8.15am every morning!  Everyone is welcome, from P1 – P7.  (Sorry Mums, Dads and Carers – you will have to get your own breakfast!)

Christmas Jumper Day – 15th December

Hi Parents/Carers,

On the 15th of December we are having a non-uniform day.  We would like children to come to school in Christmas Jumpers and donate a £1 towards Save the Children.

You do not need to splurge on a new jumper,  you can get the children to be creative and make their own unique Christmas jumper!  There will be a prize for the best “SUPER SILLY SWEATER”! 🙂 This means get your tinsel, baubles, pom poms at the ready! At Murrayfield we are always encouraging our pupils to be creative so lets get our silliest sweaters on for December 15th! 🙂

By taking part in Christmas Jumper Day we as a Rights Respecting school are looking out for the rights of children in need, who require their rights to be protected.  [UNCRC article 2: All children have these rights, Article 3:  Adults must do what is best for us,  Article 6:  I should be supported to live and grow, Article 24: I have the right to good quality health care, to clean water and good food, Article 27: I have the right to have a proper house food and clothing]

“Make the world better with your sweaters. By joining in on Christmas Jumper Day, you’re helping to save children’s lives. Together we can be there when children need us most. When they’re in danger we can keep working to keep them safe. When they’re sick, cold and hungry we can keep working to bring them food and water, medicine and shelter. Because of your help, we can keep making the world better
for children everywhere.” (Save the Children)

P1 news

Yet another busy week in Primary 1.  We have been looking at number bonds of 6 and 7 in Numeracy.  In Literacy we revised all our sounds and looked at how we can use words to create a sentence.  We listened out for beginning and end sounds in words, and some of us even managed to listen for the correct words out of two choices.  We are focusing on listening and attention at all times in Primary 1.  Ask us what makes a good listener! 🙂

We did lot’s of writing this week! We wrote a letter asking the government to save the habitats of bears and not cut trees.

On Tuesday we ventured out in to the community again and went looking for leaves again.  However, the main reason we went out in to the local area was to pick up rubbish as we have been focusing on Hedgehogs in our Scottish Wildlife topic.  We wanted to tidy up the hedgehogs’ habitat and make it lovelier for them. We learned how important recycling is for not only animals but us too. We then used our leaves to create our own hedgehogs.   On Thursday we went to Vue in Livingston with the whole school to watch Sing.  We all enjoyed our trip and were very good listeners throughout the trip. 🙂  We came back to school that day and worked hard to write a letter to a hedgehog asking him to eat bugs and worms.  On Friday we bought some treats in aid of Children in Need and enjoyed coming in to school in our “dots and spots”.

Our word boost words this week were: delicious, gobble, trudge and howl.  Make sure to ask us what they mean and even act them out! 🙂

Here is what we have to say about our week;

I liked learning our number bonds – Emily K

I liked counting our 1 to 100 song – Fraya

I liked making our hedgehogs with leaves – Aaron S

I liked listening to our story about the bear and his habitat – Hunter

We ALL liked going on our walk to find leaves and rubbish we could recycle – Robyn

I liked writing our letter to the hedgehog – Amy

I liked going to the cinema – Rachel

I liked learning our number bonds to 5, 6 and 7 bonds – Alfie

I liked learning our sounds – Robbie

I liked writing a letter to say “don’t cut trees” to save the bears’ habitat – Max

We learned about animals that are nocturnal – Emily K

Have a lovely weekend, Miss Akram 🙂

Update from the P1 family

We have had a busy week as always in Primary 1! Busy but fun of course 🙂

We have focused on our number bonds of 5 this week in numeracy and can demonstrate how to make 5 in various ways such as: fingers, numicon, cubes etc.  We also continued to practice our number formation.

In Literacy we were learning our sounds “b” and “e”.  We also looked at comparing “b” and “p” as we tend to get ourselves confused with these two sounds!   We started worst boost this week and our storybook this week was called “Leo’s dream”.  The children really enjoyed not only learning our new word boost words; investigate, reply, celebrate and enormous but also loved the story itself and we managed to discuss emotions through this book also.  Please make sure you ask us what each of our word boost words mean or even ask us to mime the word :).  We got ourselves a little confused over celebrate starting with the “c” letter but makes a “s” sound so we learned that not all of our sounds follow the rules and our English language is actually a little confusing sometimes! 😮

In our topic Scottish Wildlife we looked at habitats this week and enjoyed drawing our favourite animal and it’s habitat.  We also made a line drawing

of a fox and managed to follow Miss Akram’s directions step by step to create this drawing 🙂 as we are focusing a lot this term on listening and attention skills.

What we have to say about our week of learning this week:

I liked doing our count to 100 song – Aaron R

I liked learning the numbers to 5 – Enily Kyle

I liked learning my sound “e” and “b” – Max Purdie

I know that 4 and 1 make 5 – Ross M

I learned that enormous means something very very big – Gabriels

I know that balloon starts with our b sound – Aaron S

I like our boost word “investigate” – Fraser

I know that investigate means to find out about something – Amy

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Akram 🙂

Another week in P2/1

This week in P2/1 we have been leaning how to add two different amounts together. We learned that when you are adding you have to count the cubes or counters until you have counted them all. That will give you the answer. We were learning how to use ten-frames to help us with our adding.

We learned about the sound ‘o’.  To make our sound  we have to make our mouth into a large circle shape.

These things begin with the sound ‘o’ – orange, octopus, on, ox and octagon.  Can you help us find other things that begin with the ‘o’  sound?

We were learning about wild animals and animals are pets.  A pet might live in our houses and can be friendly.  Wild animals don’t stay in our houses and you wouldn’t want to pet one! We learned the names of some of the animals that live in Scotland.  We spoke about badgers, deer, otters, robins, rabbits, snakes and a few others. Next week we will be learning about why it is important to look after our community and the effect that litter can have on our wildlife.

We also took part in a Judo taster session.  We learned some new moves and had great fun. Destination Judo sessions are held in the Bathgate Sports centre (Xcite) on a Thursday night – we will be bringing home a leaflet to explain more!

We also learned how we can keep ourselves safe when out and about at bonfire/firework displays.  We listened to the the story of Welephant and his friend on Bonfire night.  Here is the webpage for the story if you want to share it with me. http://www.welephant.co.uk/bonfirestory000.htm

Shhhh….don’t tell but we have already started to learn our songs for our nativity.

Have a good weekend and stay safe on Bonfire Night!

This week in P1

We have had a short but busy week in Primary 1!

We have been revising all our learning from term 1 this week.  In numeracy we continued to revise all our numbers from 0-10 and have been working with ten frames this week.  In literacy we were focused on our common word “The” and even went on a “the” hunt round our classroom.   All children managed to write “the” on their whiteboards and practiced the formation of this word all week.  They were even challenged to build “the” using lego and all managed the challenging task! Well done! 🙂

We finished off our Autumn topic this week and looked at patterns through our topic.  The children had to continue  an Autumn pattern.

The children also had lot’s of fun last night at their Halloween Disco!

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Akram 🙂

Busy bees of P1

It has been a busy last 2 weeks in P1.  From Bikeability to Batty to Belle!  We also squeezed in an eventful little afternoon outside into the community!  In amongst all this excitement we managed to do lot’s of learning in class too. 🙂

The last 2 weeks in literacy we were learning our sounds ‘n’, ‘k’, ‘ck’ and revising our ‘m c s a t p i n’ sounds.  In numeracy we have been looking at 9 and 10 then revising all numbers from 0-10.  After the much loved count to 100 song, P1 now have another favourite!  We have been learning to skip count in 10s and really enjoy our new song which the boys and girls love dancing to.

We started our new topic of Autumn as well.  We observed and discussed the changes around us and created our very own Autumn hand print trees.  We also created our own pictures of what Autumn looks like to us. Whether this was a squirrel or an acorn or Halloween or leaves falling from the trees, the boys and girls all have a different picture in their head when they think of Autumn.  On Tuesday of this week, we ventured out into the community and went on our very own Autumn walk! We searched for the various different colours of leaves and any other signs of Autumn.  The children had lot’s of fun looking for their own leaves and berries.

After our visit to the park for our Autumn walk we went to the library where the lovely librarian read us a book called ‘The Huge Bag of Worries’.  We then explored the books available to us at the library and enjoyed just spending time to read these books.  On Thursday we wrote a short story comparing Autumn to the colours of Autumn.  For example; “Autumn is as red as an apple……Autumn is as yellow as a banana” etc.

Last week we had an eventful week that started off with cycling around the playground and for som

e learning how to cycle! 🙂 A huge well done to Emily Zeilnis who demonstrated great resilience and manged to ride a bike for the first time without stabilisers! Super proud!  The next day we visited some stalls set up in the hall that gave us lot’s of information on how to keep safe when cycling.  On Wednesday of last week was the day the children were looking forward to; meeting Sean Batty.

On Friday of last week we had a suprise guest arrive!  Princess Belle came to visit us, although it was apparently to give Miss Akram some lessons too!  You can ask the children why I was in need of Princess lessons. 🙂

A busy and eventful last 2 weeks of the first term.  Thank you to the boys and girls for their hard work this term and making it an enjoyable first term :).

Happy Holidays from Miss Akram.
