Welcome back P7/6

Welcome back everyone!  I hope you all had a fantastic Easter break and didn’t over indulge on the chocolate eggs too much 🙂

An inter-school football tournament will take place next Tuesday (19th) at the Community Centre.  Pupils from P6 and P7 are invited to attend.

The tournament will take place 3.45 – 5.00pm.  A Parental/Carer concern form will be sent home with pupils tomorrow.  It is important that we receive this back, confirming how your child will be getting home in order for your child to attend.  The children will be taken from school to the Community Centre by teaching staff.

Please do not hesitate to contact me on the school telephone number should you require any additional information.

Miss Preston 🙂

Happy Easter from P7/6

Well done to all our P7 and P6 pupils who did a fabulous job during this year’s CAB sessions and during the conference.  Special mention to our Aaron W and Jay for confidently standing up and in front of all the children and visitors to say their parts.  Well done boys!

This week in P7/6

We have had another very busy week in P7/6!

We have been continuing to develop our division skills.

“I’m really enjoying it” – Aiden McC

“I’m finding it a bit tricky” – Aaron A

We have started using Thinking Dice to develop our HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills) to enhance our comprehension during literacy circles.

“It was nice to meet and play against the other schools” – Aaron W

“I liked seeing old friends again who are now at different schools” – Summer

On Thursday the P7s had a visit from Mrs Henderson from the Numeracy team at Bathgate Academy.  She was extremely impressed with the range of strategies the children shared!  Ms Miller and I also learned a few new strategies too! 🙂 The children were given a brief introduction to algebra … Emma, Abby R and Eva were extremely funny and somewhat bamboozled by the whole concept of ‘x’!  They did make me giggle! 🙂 🙂

“I just don’t get ‘x’, I mean, it just doesn’t make any sense. My head hurts!” – Abby R

WWII Interdisciplinary Topic

We completed our learning about WWII leaders and did a fantastic job on our leader display.  Mrs Cordiner and I were extremely pleased with the end results!

We are building a WWII word wall!  IMG_2164

As part of our WWII learning we were extremely lucky to have a local historian in to share a variety of genuine WWII artifacts with us!   The children all really enjoyed the handling session and represented the school exceptionally well with their engagement, manners and genuine interest in what the lady was saying.

Anthony did a fantastic job modelling the army jacket!IMG_0816  “It’s really itchy!!” – Anthony

On Thursday and Friday our P6s had a chance to meet the nursery pre-school pupils.  When they move onto P7 these are some of the children they will be ‘buddy’ed’ up with 🙂  They had their first buddy responsibility of helping the nursery children with their Jammy Jog!

P6 Transition Hockey and Basketball Festival

A reminder that the P6 Hockey and Basketball Festival is taking place tomorrow (Thursday 17th) at Bathgate Academy.

Your child should bring a snack and a drink with them as we will not be back to school until just before lunchtime.

Children are allowed to come to school in their PE kit for the event, ie. tracksuit bottoms, t-shirt and trainers.  We do ask that they wear their school polo-shirt or school jumper.

If you have not already done so, can you please ensure you return the completed EE2 form tomorrow morning.  We are unable to take children off school premises without this documentation.  We will be leaving school at 9.15 sharp.

P7/6 Update

Hey!

This week in P7/6 we have been …

  • problem solving with Miss Akram
    • “it was hard and it gave you a challenge”  Amyleigh
    • “it was really difficult, but some people got it in the end” Aaron W
  • researching all about the WWII Generals
    • “it was interesting learning about the leaders, when they were born etc” Abbie H
    • “we got to find out what they were really like, some were not what you thought they were” Eva
    • “Roosevelt was the 32nd President of the USA” Jacob
    • “Roosevelt was stuck down by a cerebral hemorrhage” Aiden C
    • Surprising facts we discovered! ….
    • “I found out that Hilter got temporarily blinded by mustard gas”  Aaron A
    • “Stalin wanted scientists to make a half man/half ape hybrid” Eva
    • “Hitler killed his own family and then killed himself”  Rachel
  • having PE with Miss Moir’s class in preparation for next week’s Inter-school Hockey/Basketball Tournament
  • using our imagination and knowledge of WWII evacuees to write a letter home as a child who has been evacuated.  We came up with some fantastic adjectives to describe how the children might have felt; some of the best were: woeful (Logan), apprehensive (Jacob), dreadful (Rachel), sorrowful (Abbie H), downtrodden (Caiden), anxious (Aiden C), depressed (Aaron W), terrified (Anthony/Aiden McC), petrified (Joshua/Bailey) …… Our next step is to include this standard of adjectives into ALL our written tasks!
  • continuing to learn some Spanish in class!  We are learning how to ask/reply to basic questions about ourselves, we are becoming pretty great at counting up to 12 and playing Killer 12 in Spanish! 🙂
    • “I am enjoying learning Spanish” Joshua
    • “It’s tricky but once we get the hang of it it’s fun” Abbie H
  • learning about the formation of the English language too!  Following on from our Spanish lesson the children were interested to find out and question the English language … They decided that thinking about all the different rules was ‘melting our brains’ 🙂 🙂
  • continuing with our long multiplication and moved onto division.
    • “I’m finding multiplication a little tricky”  Logan
    • “I’m getting much better at it and I am enjoying it” Rachel
    • “I’m finding my maths a little challenging”  Abby R

Hope you all have a fabulous weekend!

From Miss Preston, Miss Akram and P7/6

Miss Preston an’ aw hur Eejits :) Masterclass 2016

We had lots of fun yesterday in our masterclass on the ‘The Eejits’.

We used our ICT and research skills to find out lots of facts about Roald Dahl.

IMG_0718 IMG_0725 IMG_0716

Some of the words within the book were a little tricky and we found it very interesting finding out about the meanings of some of the unusual Scots words we came across … some of our favourites were: coupon (face), cludgie (toilet), hawkit (ugly), puddock (frog) 🙂 🙂 🙂

We drew pictures of Mr and Mrs Eejit and used adjectives in Scots to describe them.   Then, we prepared a menu for the Eejits! …. The suggestions sounded, erm, well, lets say not quite to my taste lol!  Here are just some of the suggestions …

Breakfast: Rotten eggs oan mouldy toast washed doon wi soor mulk

Lunch:  Pizza wae cockroach topping, slimy snot insteed o’ cheese

Dinner: Dug bahookie stew wi’ rotten green tatties

Supper:  Stinkin green cheese oan mouldy aul breed

In the afternoon we painted a wall display of Mr and Mrs Eejit and added some of our favourite adjectives!

We finished off the day with a quiz on the meanings of Scots words.

WORLD BOOK DAY: MASTERCLASS … PHOTOS WILL FOLLOW!

Miss Preston x

This week in P7/6

This week in P7/6 we have been learning all about similes and metaphors and making up some silly ones of our own!  We found that similes are far easier to make up than metaphors!  Miss Akram has been continuing with increasing our knowledge of paragraphs.  Next week we will be considering the main areas of a newspaper article – we will be writing our own front page of the Murrayfield Mail announcing Britain at War!

In numeracy we have moved onto multiplication – some of us are struggling to see the purpose of being able to explain our strategies and the need for learning standard algorithms.  With this in mind, Miss Preston has a challenge up her sleeve for next week where ‘I just work it out in my head’ will not be possible 😉 😉   Last week’s M/S/H challenge has shown that we need to increase the variety of mathematical language we use in class and that we need to practice worded math questions.  This will be a focus as we move forward.

We have moved onto our WWII topic.  We listened to Chamberlain announcing Britain at War and discussed how this made us feel, how it must have felt for the people at the time.  We have been discussing Allied and Axis countries – next week we will be working in groups to learn about the main leaders.  We will be learning some playground games that children in the late 1930s would be playing (weather permitting, this will be done outside).  The children, now equipped with their ID cards, will be introduced to an air raid …. but when …. and how will they react??

Inline with WLC 1+2 for languages, we will be increasing our Spanish within class – this was fully introduced this week and the children did fantastically well breaking down a few sentences I said orally; using both the context we were discussing and pulling on their existing knowledge of French & English sounding words!

We have completed the planning, sourcing of materials and building of our ISSs!  As part of our WWII topic we will build on this new knowledge of sketching, planning and sourcing materials as a homework challenge – the children have yet to decide on what area of WWII this will involve.  The models will be sent home with the children next week: Remember to ask them to describe and explain each of the parts of their ISS!

Our Rainforest in a Jar experiments have provided a variety of successes.  These will be sent home with the children next week after reporting our final observations on Wednesday.

P6 NEWS

We have your transition Basketball and Hockey event coming up very soon!  With this in mind, our class will join with Miss Moir’s class for PE – both indoor and outdoor PE sessions.

P7 NEWS

I was extremely impressed with the effort, investigative skills and overall maturity in which each and everyone of my P7s addressed the Transition Science Project!  I was so excited to see what they would produce and I was not disappointed.  You should all be so very proud of yourselves!  I hope you all remembered to thank your parents, family and friends for their help and support with this task!  Well done!  I have no doubt Bathgate Academy will be impressed too!

P7/6: P7 Transition News

P7 Transition News

Tomorrow (Tuesday 23rd) we have a representative from Bathgate Academy coming into school with some ex-pupils of Murrayfield to share their experiences and answer questions about how they found the transition from P7 to S1.  I have been told that the ex-Murrayfield pupils are all really looking forward to coming back and sharing their experiences with us!  It will be fantastic to see them again too!

A reminder that the transition Science Project is due this Friday (26th).  As this is a task that has been set by the Academy it is really important that this deadline is met.  I spoke my P7s today and if anyone would like me to have a look over what they have been working on I am more than willing to do so.

Miss Preston 🙂
