Summer Church Service

Despite a last minute venue change due to the infamous Scottish weather, Mid Calder Primary held its annual Summer Service on Thursday 25th June. We had poems, readings, hymns, a performance from our brass band and a P7 Prayer before Miss Thompson summed up the last year at Mid Calder Primary in a closing speech.

Well done to all of the pupils and staff who helped this event to happen with the last minute changes, and to the parents for braving the weather to support our school. Happy holidays everybody! 🙂

P1 P1/2 and P2 visit Deep Sea World

Primary 1, 1/2 and 2 had a wonderful trip to Deep Sea World on Tuesday 16th June. We saw seals being fed, learnt all about Star fish and sea anemones and even got to handle them at a special class. We would like to thank all the parents who came along and helped out. We had a fantastic time!

Kapla Ships Ahoy!

We are learning to create a ship from construction materials by using and following a design plan.

I can use Kapla to create my pirate ship design.

P2/1 had lots of fun last week when we had the opportunity to design and construct our own pirate ships.

We have been learning all about the key features of a pirate ship and we were able to apply this knowledge when we made a design plan for our own ship.

Working in small groups, we were sure to include a bow and stern, deck, rigging, sails and a crows nest as well as a captains cabin, store room and a galley.

Our finished creations were very impressive and we enjoyed showing and sharing them with other groups. Many team skills were demonstrated including perseverance, communication, collaboration and contribution.

Finlay Fe said ”I needed to have steady hands to make sure it didn’t fall down.”

Oliver commented ”My team had to stay calm and not get frustrated. If it fell down we understood and built it back up.”

Eilidh made the point –  ”We had to work together to build the ship.”

Take a look at our pictures and see our designs for yourself!

Celebrating 100 Years of Mid Calder Gala

Nursery to Primary 7 have been working on a mini learning context about Mid Calder, as they are celebrating their 100th year of Gala Days this year. Classes have been taking part in lots of different activities from walks through the village to orienteering, map reading to investigating the history of Mid Calder. Each class produced a photo frame of their learning, photos of the frames will be displayed at the front of the school on Gala Day and the Gala committee will display the frames in the village.

Sports Day

This week we had our Mid Calder Primary School Sports Day, which for the first time in a very long time managed to happen on the day we had planned it, thanks to the sunshine. The children took part in a variety of potted sports in their house teams and the favourite by far was the tug of war, which even some of the teachers joining in!

A big well done to Mrs Mitchell, our P.E. teacher for organising Sports Day for us and for the Primary 7 helpers. A big thank you to all the parents, family and carers that came along to support the event.

The winning house will be announced at assembly on Friday.

P2/1’s Dictionary Escapades!

P2/1 have been very busy learning about alphabetical order and how to to use a dictionary to find out the spelling and meaning of different words.

P1

We are learning about alphabetical order.

I can order letters and words alphabetically.

P2

We are learning how to use a dictionary.

I can find words in a dictionary by their beginning letter.

Our P1’s have been practicing ordering words alphabetically by their beginning letter and we hope to soon be able to do this without support. Our P2’s have used their knowledge of the alphabet to quickly locate the correct section of the dictionary and find the word. Next, we are aiming to apply our skills by using a dictionary to support our spelling and comprehension of words across our learning.

Finlay Fr commented ‘‘You have to look closely for words in a dictionary. I check that I have the correct beginning letter first before I look for the words.”

Ferne said, ”I started by using a smaller dictionary but now I’m using a thick one!”

Emme advised, ”You can use a dictionary to help you spell words. I like them.”

Matthew stated, ”In a dictionary, if you read alongside the word it tells you what it means.”

We have all been very enthusiastic in learning to know and apply our alphabet skills. Well done everyone.
