P1b Materials Hunt

LI: We are learning about materials.

SC: I can describe and compare different materials, including plastic, paper, metal and fabric.

SC: I can group everyday objects by material and explain my decisions.

This week Primary 1b have been learning about different materials. We began by exploring a variety of different materials and discussing how each one looks and feels. Then the children applied what they learned to a ‘materials hunt’. In four teams, they searched around the classroom for everyday objects made of plastic, paper, metal and fabric. The children grouped the objects by material, and were great at justifying their decisions. For example, Rory explained that he thought a 5 pence coin was made of metal because it was hard and shiny. Brandon also explained that a teddy bear he found in the classroom was fabric because it was soft and fluffy.

We are now applying what we learned about materials to help us design and create a castle for our classroom.

A sad farewell…

This week was bitter sweet for Mid Calder Primary School as, although we were all looking forward to our summer holidays, we also had to say goodbye to some very special members of staff. Miss Cotter has been with us at MCPS for 32 years, and so the pupils and staff worked together to give her a memorable send off with a retirement assembly. Each class gave a special performance for Miss Cotter by singing songs, sharing memories, reciting poems, and some of the children even gave her some hints and tips about how they think she should spend her retirement. All of the pupils and staff would like to wish Miss Cotter a long and happy retirement.

We also had to say a sad goodbye to Mrs Gordon, Miss Dunsmore and Miss Kerr on Friday and we wish them all the very best in their new ventures.

Summer Church Service

Despite a last minute venue change due to the infamous Scottish weather, Mid Calder Primary held its annual Summer Service on Thursday 25th June. We had poems, readings, hymns, a performance from our brass band and a P7 Prayer before Miss Thompson summed up the last year at Mid Calder Primary in a closing speech.

Well done to all of the pupils and staff who helped this event to happen with the last minute changes, and to the parents for braving the weather to support our school. Happy holidays everybody! 🙂

P1 P1/2 and P2 visit Deep Sea World

Primary 1, 1/2 and 2 had a wonderful trip to Deep Sea World on Tuesday 16th June. We saw seals being fed, learnt all about Star fish and sea anemones and even got to handle them at a special class. We would like to thank all the parents who came along and helped out. We had a fantastic time!

Term 4 Achievement Awards

Yesterday we had our Achievement Assembly for Term 4. Each class nominated one pupil to receive the Achievement Award for their class. Parents and carers were invited along to watch the assembly.

We also gave out Star Writer Awards, Top Scorer prizes, sporting trophies and announced the winning house for the term. The school was also awarded a certificate for our continued support for the Smoke Free Home and Zones project.

Well done who everyone who received an award!

Kapla Ships Ahoy!

We are learning to create a ship from construction materials by using and following a design plan.

I can use Kapla to create my pirate ship design.

P2/1 had lots of fun last week when we had the opportunity to design and construct our own pirate ships.

We have been learning all about the key features of a pirate ship and we were able to apply this knowledge when we made a design plan for our own ship.

Working in small groups, we were sure to include a bow and stern, deck, rigging, sails and a crows nest as well as a captains cabin, store room and a galley.

Our finished creations were very impressive and we enjoyed showing and sharing them with other groups. Many team skills were demonstrated including perseverance, communication, collaboration and contribution.

Finlay Fe said ”I needed to have steady hands to make sure it didn’t fall down.”

Oliver commented ”My team had to stay calm and not get frustrated. If it fell down we understood and built it back up.”

Eilidh made the point –  ”We had to work together to build the ship.”

Take a look at our pictures and see our designs for yourself!

Celebrating 100 Years of Mid Calder Gala

Nursery to Primary 7 have been working on a mini learning context about Mid Calder, as they are celebrating their 100th year of Gala Days this year. Classes have been taking part in lots of different activities from walks through the village to orienteering, map reading to investigating the history of Mid Calder. Each class produced a photo frame of their learning, photos of the frames will be displayed at the front of the school on Gala Day and the Gala committee will display the frames in the village.
