This week, some of our classes took part in a maths competition on Sumdog, competing against other school across West Lothian. Mid Calder Primary School has a history of doing very well in Sumdog contests, and this one was no exception.
Primary 4B were the overall winners for the whole of West Lothian, with Primary 5B coming in 2nd place. P4B will have will have a photocall in a local paper, with a Local Authority representative and a member of the Sumdog Team.
We also had 6 pupils who appeared in the top 50:
Kai (P4B) – 22rd
Jamie (P5A)- 24th
Oliver (P4B)- 33rd
Lewis (P5B)- 42nd
Ruari (P4B)- 43rd
Niamh (P4B)- 49th
As we know, it is very important to be accurate on Sumdog, and P5B and P4B were also daily winners over the week long competition.
A huge well done to all those who took part!
Today Primary 5a showcased their learning about Ancient Roman in an Assembly for the pupils in our school and our parents and carers. Together the pupils brainstormed ideas and created a script to show everything they knew about Romans. A big well done P5a!

The Into Film Festival is a free, annual, nationwide celebration of film & education for 5-19 year olds and as a school we have attended the festival for the past 3 years. After the pupils have watched the film they analyse it in class and complete a film review activity.
Primary 4 watched Ice Age Collision Course, Primary 5 watched Inside Out and P6-7 viewed Alice Through the Looking Glass in 3D.
Primary 3 and 3/2 visited Edinburgh Zoo to view My Neighbour Totoro a Japanese fantasy film. They also took part in a workshop and had a quick tour around the Zoo.
Thank you to all the parent helpers who helped support the cinema visits.

Dear Parent/Carer,
Welcome to Term 2 in Primary 3/2. We started by getting ideas for our new film and digital literacy Reading topic! We look forward to a fantastic term with P3 and P3/2 pupils and enjoyed our trip to Edinburgh Zoo to see a film and talk about conservation and asked great questions about life in a rainforest. Amazingly, we also caught a glimpse of a male panda! Please continue to comment in your child’s homework jotter or contact us directly. It would be helpful if pupils could bring in a box of tissues to help fight infections.
Dear Parent/Carer,
Welcome to Term 2 in Primary 5. All of the children have settled well into P5 and we are looking forward to a busy and fun term 2. The highlights of last term included our Romans IDL context, and our P4/5 school camp to Dalguise. All pupils have also now joined a Junior Leadership Team and look forward to making positive changes within our school this year. We are excited to share our learning about the Romans during our class assembly on 18th November.

Miss Sherlow
Last week Primary 4 and 5 started George’s Marvellous Medicine, their new IDL context for learning. As this will have reading as a key curricular focus, and the story follows the characters of George and his Grandma, we would like to invite our Grandmas, Grandpas and other relatives of the older generations to join us in a ‘Novel Natters’ session on Monday 21st November at 2pm. This will be a lovely opportunity for the children to read pieces of their own work to their Grandparents…we just hope that you are all a lot nicer and friendlier than George’s Grandma!
We look forward to nattering to you then.
