Fraction Fun in P7!

This week in Primary 7 we have been consolidating our learning about fraction from P6 and progressing on to new learning.

In number talks we have been looking at strategies to help us with division.

In mental maths we remembered how to find a fraction of a number, for example 1/6 of 24. We know that our multiplication and division facts help us quickly recall the answers to these questions.

I can create a set of equal fractions and can decide if fractions are equal.

• I can use my knowledge of table facts and multiples to decide if fractions are equal
• I can create a series of fractions which are equal using my knowledge of table facts and multiples

In today’s lesson at our stations we:

Sum Dog: We had to find a fraction of a shape, order fractions and calculate equivalent fractions. When we are Sum Dog we are trying to develop our accuracy so we always score between 80-100%, we know that accuracy is important because we want to get the correct answer as quick as possible. We have been learning how to eliminate answers that do not make sense.

Game: We used the new fraction resources to make equivalent fractions, for example 1/3 = 2/6

Teaching table: We used the textbook to explore how to calculate equivalent fractions when pictures and diagrams are not available. We also completed some problem solving activities.

How to help at home:

  • Encourage me to play the Sum Dog fraction competition
  • Ensure I complete my fractions homework
  • Ask me the fraction of a number, for example what is 1/3 of 15.
  • Ask me my times tables and the related division facts.

Primary Two have been learning all about place value.

‘I have investigated how whole numbers are constructed, can understand the importance of zero within the system and can use my knowledge to explain the link between a digit, its place and its value. MNU 1-02a’

This week Primary Two have been learning all about place value and how to partition two digit numbers into tens and units. We really enjoyed using the ten and units to layout different numbers up to 100. Once we got the hang of this we then practised adding two digit numbers together by partitioning (adding the tens together and then the units). We worked very hard and can now add two digit numbers through using our knowledge of partitioning. By Thursday we were able to teach each other how to add two digit numbers! Well done to everyone in Primary Two you all worked very hard!

Number Talks in the Snow!

Today we had a number talks with a difference! Miss Burton took us outside into the snow/frost, she gave us a calculation and we had to write it down in the snow and write the answer. When we came back into class we showed the photos on the SMARTBoard and we had to explain what strategy we used to add 9. Some of us counted on 9, some of used a friendly number – we added 10 and then subtracted one and some counted onto the next 10, and added the remainder. Then we discussed which strategy was the most efficient. We had lots of fun!

We certainly measure up in Primary 5!

Learning Intention:
We are learning to estimate and measure items and then check to see how close I was – Length (MNU 2-11b, MNU 2-11a)

Success Criteria:
I can use the vocabulary and metric units of length
I can select and use appropriate equipment to measure the lengths of different items considering how accurate I need to be
I can choose and use suitable units to measure the lengths of items, converting when appropriate, and can present my answer
I can compare my measurement with my estimate to see if my answer was sensible

In our class maths lessons, we have been learning about different ways of measuring things, why you would measure and the instruments you can use to help you. This week, we focused on measuring length and created a list of the key vocabulary we might use, including longest, shortest, width, height, distance, centimeters, meters, millimetres and more… In our teaching group, we looked at the value of estimating and how this can help us, then we were given objects to guess the length, width and height of. We checked our answers using a variety of measuring instruments and even used decimal points when recording the measurements in meters and centimeters, or centimeters and millimeters. In our game group, we were challenged to measure different body parts, for example, the length from the tip of our thumb to our pinkie, or from one ear to the other. We also demonstrated our knowledge of measure using Sumdog, an activity that we can also work on at home.

An extra challenge: can you measure the length of some of the objects around your house and comment with your findings below?

P1a New Term

We have had a very busy start to the new term in P1a.

Literacy

We have been working hard on reading and writing the Common Words.We use paper cups and bricks to build towers and word walls with the words we can read. Sometimes they get really high! We also play a game with words written on lollipop sticks. We take turns to pull out a stick, read the word and put it safely in our pile.  However, if we pull out the stick with the red dot, we have to put all the sticks we have back in the pot. When the sand in the timer runs out, the person with most sticks is the winner. We are beginning to  look at the next set of words now and these will be sent home soon, along with a new game to play!

Numeracy

This week we focused on the numbers to 20. We practised reading and writing the numbers, counting forwards and backwards, saying the number after, before and between and counting groups of items. We made number sequences and put numbers in order from the smallest to the largest.

IDL

We were very excited last term when Tim Peake blasted off to the International Space Station. Our interest and enthusiasm has continued, so we have decided to investigate Space ! First of all we looked at some space related objects and pictures, and shared our ideas with each other. Then we thought about what we would really like to learn more about, and we created some questions about Space. Together,  we made a 3D Mind Map to help us plan our Learning over the next few weeks. We are going to record our Learning in a big book which we have all signed, because we will all be the authors and illustrators of it!

Primary 4 week ending 4th December 2015

The last two weeks in Primary Four have been very busy indeed!

In maths the children have been very busy weighing in grams using kitchen scales marked in increments. They have also been solving lots of mild, spicy and hot number challenges and talking about all the different strategies they can use to solve a number problem. Multiplying and dividing using arrays and times tables have also been keeping our brains busy!

Our IDL topic is continuing. This week the children have been recording advertising jingles to go with the chocolate bars they have invented. They have been considering what their market is interested in, such as relaxation, fun or health. We are currently very busy making eye catching posters that could be displayed on bus stops and poster boards around the country!

Square Numbers

We are learning to investigate and re-created well-known number patterns involving square numbers. 

  • I can create different representations of square numbers.
  • I can create a square number by multiplying a number by itself.
  • I am beginning to recognise square numbers up to 100.

Today in Maths we investigated square numbers. We first of all used counters to represent square numbers and patterns, then we had to work out the calculation we would need to use to calculate square numbers. For example, 2² is 2 x 2. The we played a game were we had to calculate square numbers and we completed a written activity.

Support at home: You can support your child at home by helping them learn square numbers for example; 1×1, 2×2, 3×3, 4×4, 5×5, 6×6, 7×7, 8×8, 9×9, 10×10

P1a Toyshop

This week we have been shopping in the Toyshop.

There are lots of things to buy in the toyshop. We choose what we would like and put it into our

shopping basket.

The shopkeeper checks the price and tells us how much we need to pay. We look in the purse and choose the coins we need. The shopkeeper puts the money in the till.                                                         We are using real coins  to do our shopping!

 

Einartas – ‘You need money to buy the car. That’s my favourite.’

Aidan – ‘At the shop I bought an aeroplane and a car. The shopkeeper said it was 6p, so I counted out six 1p coins.’

Naomi – ‘You need 10p to buy the doll and the dinosaur.’

Daisy – ‘I went to the shop and I bought a dolly and a toy giraffe. It cost 2p and 3p, so that was 5p altogether.’
