Primary 6

Primary 6 are continuing to make good progress in learning this term.

We have well and truly begun our historical investigations into our Scottish roots: focusing on WHO the Jacobites were, WHEN in history they were living and WHERE they could be located within Scotland and abroad.  We have time lined the Stuart family tree to understand where the word “Jacobite” comes from and are beginning to build up information about Scottish clans and their influence on the Jacobites.  When the weather improves, we are looking forward to heading outside to continue our investigations into battle tactics, Jacobite soldier formation and increase our familiarity with the infamous Redcoats.

We are looking forward to getting to grips with Guided Reading in our classroom, delving into the wonderful world of texts, whilst developing our reading skills.  We have been developing our understanding of the layout, structure and contents of factual report writing.  We continue to up-level our work to ensure it is to the highest quality.

As part of our classroom community work, we are beginning to examine Growth Mindsets to develop our learning power.  We look forward to increasing our independence, our resilience and our perseverance within school and out, developing our future working and life skills.

Mid Calder celebrate Burns in braw style!

On Friday 22nd January, Mid Calder Primary participated in their annual Burns/Scots poetry celebration.

Pupils from Nursery, right through to Primary Seven, we asked to develop their knowledge and understanding of Scots language by learning a selection of poems.  Each class selected two representatives who then recited their chosen poems to the whole school community.

Mr MacFarlane, Mrs Bokhari and Mrs Ross were asked to judge the participants- the winners of each stage from P4-7 will represent the school at the West Lothian recital competition.  Thank-you to Mr MacFarlane and Mrs Bokhari for their excellent judging skills.

Many thanks to the Vice Captains for compering the morning and welcoming our visitors into school.

A huge thank-you to the parents and carers who came along to show their support during the morning.  Also a huge thank-you to all of the parents and carers from the school community who helped prepare poems with all of our learners at home.  The level of commitment and effort when learning these difficult pieces of text, was phenomenal.

Well done to the girls from Primary 5 and Primary 7 who were keen to share their skills and talents in Highland dancing.  What a fantastic performance!

All of the pupils and staff members participated in preparations for the assembly with enthusiasm and dedication – another example of successful learning in Mid Calder Primary School!IMG_0999 IMG_1001 IMG_1023IMG_1065 IMG_1066IMG_1056 IMG_1057IMG_1052 IMG_1053 IMG_1054 IMG_1064IMG_1058 IMG_1059 IMG_1060 IMG_1063IMG_1061 IMG_1062 IMG_1073 IMG_1074 IMG_1075 IMG_1076IMG_1077 IMG_1078 IMG_1079 IMG_1080IMG_1070 IMG_1072 IMG_1082

P6 are bletherin’ braw Scots!

Primary Six are currently learning all about Robert Burns’ life, his poetry and how to interpret Scots language.   WS-BurnsPic

We have been using Scots dictionaries to investigate Scots vocabulary and have been comparing it to the English translation.  We are also currently writing a poem in class, inspired by the poem, “Look.  What can you see?”  We are developing use of descriptive language and using a repetitive pattern.  We are looking forward to developing and editing our products can displaying them proudly around our class.

Below are our Burns poems for our Burns Assembly on Friday 22nd January.  All pupils now have a copy of the poems chosen and should practice them at home, ready for our class recital next Tuesday.  Following this, two pupils will be chosen to recite at our assembly.

To make sure you are Winter  ready and are able to access the blog if in the event of the school closing, please leave a comment below to show which Burns poem you are learning and how you are getting on.
