Days of the Week

For the last 2 weeks the children in nursery have been learning the days of the week. We have been singing songs to practice the cycle of the days and it has helped us learn the day before and day after. We read ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ and discussed what he ate every day. At the Art and Craft table some of the boys and girls painted a caterpillar and placed a day of the week card on each part of his body. We then put the days in order and attached the food that he ate on the correct days. As a team, we also completed a jigsaw and looked at the different things the children did on different days. The boys and girls can now complete this independently or with a friend.

At home the children could sing you the days of the week songs and try to talk about what day it is today, tomorrow, yesterday.

Scottish Book Week in the Nursery

*I can explore and choose stories and other texts to watch, read and listen to, and can share my likes and dislikes.

Reading and the enjoyment of books is very important in the nursery and we have group story time every day. Different children choose the book for their group and tell the others why they chose it and what attracted them to the book. We discuss the author and illustrator and look at the picture to see if it can give us any clues about the story. After reading the book together the group talk about the characters and what they liked or didn’t like about the story. We also pay close attention to any rhyming words we might hear.

During free play time we read books to each other and sometimes the children like to be the teacher and read books to their class. The nursery love using books to help us learn and we enjoyed doing this during Scottish Book Week and every other week! Keeeeep reading!!

Nursery Autumn Walk

Today the children in the nursery went on an adventure in to Calder Wood to find some Autumn treasures. We had a very exciting walk through the woods and were lucky enough to see and hear some interesting things. When the boys and girls were quiet they could hear the river, birds singing and an aeroplane. They found acorns, Autumn leaves of every colour, snails, berries, blackberries and apples! The children drew and wrote about what they had seen on their recording sheet. They also found a very large bear that had escaped from the school and was sitting on the branch of a large tree having a rest! The nursery boys and girls rescued him and took him back to the school safely.

We loved our time learning in the outdoors!

Nursery Money

  • I can recognise the value of coins.
  • I can pay for items using coins in play and real life contexts.

This week in the nursery we have been learning more about money. We talked about what we already knew about money: –

Hannah told us “We buy cat food with money.”

Charlotte “buys toys from Toys r Us” and Connor knew that “we use money for snack.” Finlay  was able to tell the other children that a £1 coin was the same as 100 pennies!

We played the dino game on Education City and managed to match the coin to place in the piggy bank. The children also came to Mrs Murray’s restaurant and paid for their pasta snack with real pennies. We spoke about the coins they chose and some children could identify them.

Well done nursery boys and girls!

The building has started!

There has been lots of excitement in the nursery this week as the diggers arrived on site to start building our new nursery! The children enjoyed watching through the fence, chatting to the builders and even getting some building materials from them for our garden. The inside of the nursery now has a building site, site office and canteen for the workers and the children outside have been building with mud and bricks. We have talked about how to build safely and learned more about how to make the strongest structures.

It is going to be an exciting few months watching the changes, as they build our new place to play and learn.

Pizza Delivery!

The nursery children have spent the last two weeks creating Pizza World! We have taken orders, written menus, made pizzas at the craft table, made deliveries, we have had cheese and tomato, pepperoni, ham and pineapple and much, much more! Pizza World got a new manager in the afternoon and he had to deal with complaints about noise and occasionally had to get his team to tidy up the shop!!! After all the hard work, creativity, sharing, communicating and lots of smiles, the children got the opportunity to make their own pizzas. With the help of 2 parents they prepared the area, washed their hands, spread the tomato base and added their topping. After 10 minutes in the oven the pizzas looked, tasted and smelled delicious!

Well done boys and girls!

Nursery Charter

This week in the nursery we have been discussing our nursery charter. The children worked in their small groups with their adult to decide on what they would like to feel like in the nursery and the things that make them happy. They decided that being kind, sharing, helping each other and listening to each other were important if we were going to play, learn and be safe. The children then decorated a kind hand and spoke about what they used their kind hands for.

“My kind hands will always be kind.” Amelia-Jo

“My kind hands give love to everybody that wants to go to the park.” Hannah

“My kind hands share.” Erin

“My hands are kind to people who are sad.” Lola

We took these ideas and put them in to our charter and we think it’s looking great!

Yum! Potato soup!

This week the nursery children had a delicious treat! After picking the potatoes from the nursery garden last week, Mrs Aikman and some of the boys and girls made potato soup to have as snack. The children helped read the recipe, chop the ingredients, write the menu and the the best bit………. they were able to eat it! They enjoyed dipping their bread and were delighted with how tasty it was.

Our First Week at Nursery

It has been a busy week in Mid Calder Nursery. We have met new friends who have started their very first day at nursery. We have welcomed them and made them smile.

We have also enjoyed playing with friends that we already knew from last session. We have been building together, sharing and cooperating with other children. We have enjoyed helping the teachers make snack and learned new cutting and spreading skills. We also practiced our counting and decided together how many of each item we got to have for snack. We have been dancing and put on a show for the other children and enjoyed making castles in the sand.

We even managed to find numbers in the jewellery box! Can you see what number it is?

Outside in the garden the boys and girls have been building dens, playing in the mud kitchen and they were very excited to dig up the potatoes they grew with Mrs Aikman. We are going to use them to make potato soup next week. We are looking forward to another busy week in the nursery next week.
