Eco Assembly

Well done and thank you to all who took part in the Eco Assembly on Friday.

I think a wee reminder about what being an Eco School means was a good idea, and I hope that everyone now knows how important it is that they all play their part.

As mentioned in our assembly, litter is becoming an issue in the school.  Please make sure that everyone remembers to use the bins in the playground to help reduce the problem.  Each class can also help by making sure they have an up-to-date litter picking rota.

We are looking forward to our next big project of developing our story telling area in the school garden.  We are very excited about seeing all your little rockfish!

Murder Most Horrid!

In our topic about Mary, Queen of Scots, we have been learning all about the mysterious death of her second husband, Lord Darnley.  We investigated his death by looking at various documents and evidence from the time – including maps, letters from Mary to the Earl of Bothwell, and letters to Mary from Elizabeth I.  We discussed the evidence and considered its reliability.  We thought that the evidence was probably not reliable, however, we now know that fingerprints and DNA evidence wasn’t available in the 16th Century!  Most of us thought that the Earl of Bothwell (Mary’s soon-to-be third husband!) was the most likely suspect, but we’ll never know the truth!

We used our knowledge to become crime correspondents and wrote newspaper articles about the case.  We enjoyed using writer’s tricks such as alliteration, puns and rhyme to make attention-grabbing headlines!  Some of our headlines include, ‘Darn!  Darnley’s Dead!’, ‘Deid Darnley!’ and ‘Mysterious Murder’.  We used the questions ‘Who? What? Where? When? and Why?’ to form the basis of our introductory paragraph, then gave more information including quotes from witnesses to complete the body of our reports.

We have been continuing to decorate our castle and it’s coming along nicely!  Here are a few photos of our work so far – including our maps of a Royal Burgh, castle maps, our Crown jewels, our historical evidence folder, our portraits of Mary and our newspaper reports.  This week we’re looking forward to typing up our ‘Secret Panel’ creative stories and sharing those too!

In maths, we have begun a block on fractions.  We have been learning the terms ‘numerator’ and ‘denominator’ and finding out what they mean, and what they tell us about the fraction.  We found out that the bigger the denominator (the number at the bottom of the fraction!) then the smaller the actual fraction!  Some of us have also had a quick look at improper fractions and mixed numbers.  Next week we will look at finding unit fractions of numbers.

We all enjoyed sports day this week – despite the rain.  Well done on your efforts, P5!  We also held our class auditions for the school talent show.  What a talented bunch P5 are (Miss Thomson thinks she may have discovered the next big boyband!) – well done to everyone who took part.  It takes a lot of courage to perform in front of an audience and you all did a brilliant job!

We were excited this week to put our knowledge of evaporation (which we learned about in our water cycle topic!) to good use when we finally started trying to grow some sugar crystals (Miss Thomson’s only been promising we can do this since Xmas…!)  The classroom still smells like a mixing room in Willy Wonka’s amazing factory after some of us decided to add some flavouring to the mix.  Keep your fingers crossed that we manage to grow some crystals!

P3 Update

Judo Taster

This week it was the turn of the P3s to sample some Judo skills and fun.

https://twitter.com/wlkirkhill/status/869162633051734016

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it, and some keen to continue learning this in the club after school.

Mummification of Tomatoes!

https://twitter.com/wlkirkhill/status/869629230858080257

The tomatoes have been getting “mummified” for a couple of weeks. Still not quite ready yet so they changed over the salt mix to dehydrate the tomatoes further.

Sports Day

The weather was mostly dry, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed participating.

Shoebox Car Challenge

It was the final week of the preparation of the shoe-box cars for the challenge. This week the focus was on trying to get the cars to go straight and far – experimenting with wax lubrication and accurate measurement for the axles.

There were 3 challenges-

  • Furthest
  • Straightest
  • Prettiest

The first 2 were done with a “Top Gear” style leader-board – leading to a very exciting ending to the challenges. Well done to everyone – including the P3 pupils from Dechmont who were here for the day as part of their transition.

What P4 learned this week :)

This week we have been learning all about time in Maths. Cristian learned that we count round the clock in 5’s. Alanna knows that if the big hand is on the left hand side it shows ‘ to’ the hour and if the big hand is on the right hand side it shows ‘past’ the hour. Holly thought that learning about ‘Time’ was trickier than she first thought. Maddison enjoyed trying to beat the class time with the Round the Class Cards. Blanka liked playing Buzz with the 3 and 4 times table but wants to improve her knowledge further. Toby enjoyed working with Joshua when learning about ‘am’ and ‘pm’.

This week we enjoyed doing our handwriting using our key topic words from the Titanic, especially Toby because it is was different from just writing the other words. Nico and Tia really liked writing the facts and Deryn and Kiera especially liked drawing the timeline of the Titanic. Sarah enjoyed doing both! Yousef and Chantelle enjoyed writing and describing a picture and Chantelle wrote a further paragraph using her imagination. We finished our class novel about an Edwardian girl who wrote a diary when she was going on the Titanic. Steven enjoyed finally finishing it and we are now starting a new novel called, The Little Princess.

Layla, Grace B, Toby, Grace S, Maddison, Zach and Oscar enjoyed drawing lifeboats for our Titanic wall display. Steven enjoyed painting the sea on the display and Holly liked painting the ice-berg, making sure it was white enough.

Lewis, callie, Grace B, Alanna, Grace S, Allie, Blanka, Zach, Jayden, Toby,  Joshua, Layla, Nico and Sarah enjoyed auditioning for the Talent Show this week which will be on 20th June. We will soon find out who made it through to the finals.

Blanka got chosen to go to Hot Chocolate Friday because of her fabulous effort every week with her Home Learning. Well done!

Jack enjoyed taking part in the Eco assembly this week and the class are super proud of Toby and Nico for getting Pupil of the Week!

This week in P6 things were back to normal after our student teacher Miss Ostridge, finished her time with us.

We have started work on angles in maths, learning about measuring angles and classifying their types.

We have been investigating Chinese calligraphy as part of our topic.  We learned to write our names in Chinese characters.

It was also very exciting as we had sports day.  Well done to all the winners and to everyone for taking part.

Sports’ Day- A Big Thank You !

Well done everyone for taking part in this year’s Sports’ Day. It was a wee bit dreich this afternoon but everyone was still smiling and all the children were keen to take part.  Thank you so much to all the families and friends who came along to support us and got a bit wet 🙂

Another big thank you to the P6 and P4 helpers who did all the running about at both events and also to Mrs Alston, Mrs Featherstone, Mrs Jamieson, Caitlin and Mrs McMillan for keeping score and handing out the stickers.

And finally thank you to all the parents/carers who took part in the races- balancing a bean bag and running with an egg and spoon at the same time is no mean feat.

🙂
