Home Learning Week 1 St Josephs’s PS Primary 1
This week Primary 1 have been learning about subtraction in maths. We also went outside to measure using non-standard units. In topic we used clay to make houses and used the large wooden blocks to build castles. In literacy we used talking tins to listen to a dictated sentence and wrote the sentence on whiteboards thinking about the sounds and common words. We have been introduced to our new Health and Wellbeing characters and have been using QR codes to listen to stories all about the Wellbeing indicator of the month ‘Nurture’.
This week Primary 1 celebrated Fairtrade Fortnight. The Fairtrade Committee performed a short drama to the school at Assembly. Many thanks to Mrs Byrne for helping to organise. We learned a Fairtrade song and found out about where Fairtrade chocolate comes from. We celebrated ‘Shrove Tuesday’ by making pancakes with Mrs McLardy, they were delicious! We had a lovely service on Wednesday where we received our ashes to signify the beginning of Lent.
Primary 1 have had another exciting week! Thank you very much to Rena’s mum who took the time to come in to Primary 1 to teach us some French colours. We met ‘Pascale’ who helped us to learn the colours red, blue and yellow. We loved it! It was really fun and we learned so much! We were introduced to our new sounds ‘igh’ and ‘y’ and are getting very good at recognising these sounds in words.
Primary 1 have been introduced this week to our new vowel digraph ai/ay. We have learned that ‘ai’ comes mainly in the middle of a word and ‘ay’ comes mainly at the end. We have been continuing our daily Number Talks and are very good at explaining our strategies. We listened to the the story ‘The Dot’ by Peter Reynolds and created our own dot black pen drawing. We then wrote a super sentence describing our dot picture. We are continuing to enjoy developing our skills during our topic afternoons.
This week Primary 1 have celebrated Robert Burns day with lots of fun Scottish activities. We listened to the story ‘The Gruffalo in Scots’, drew a picture of the Gruffalo and labelled it with some Scottish words. We performed the song’Bananas are the Best’ by the Scottish writer Ewan McVicar, we were fantastic! We continued our ‘Houses and Homes’ topic activities showing skills in teamwork, problem solving and creativity.
Primary 1 have had a busy week. In literacy we have been wordbuilding with the ‘sh’ and ‘ch’ sounds. We listened to the story ‘The Rainbow Fish’ and wrote a sentence describing the character. In maths we are continuing to develop our understanding of addition. We have been introduced to ‘Number Talks’ where we discuss the strategies we are using to solve a problem. We have been very good at learning all the hand signals. We have started our new topic ‘Houses and Homes’ and we have been very interested in finding out about different types of houses in Linlithgow.
