ANTI-BULLYING WEEK

Anti-Bullying Week is  taking place from 15 to 19 November, we’re exploring Articles 2 (non-discrimination), 12 (respect for the views of the child) and 19 (protection from violence, abuse and neglect). The Week is coordinated by the Anti-Bullying Alliance in England and Wales, respectme agency in Scotland and The Northern Ireland Anti-Bullying Forum. This year’s theme is ‘One Kind Word’, spreading kindness across the country.

Article 2 – No Discrimination.

All children have all these rights, no matter who they are, where they live, what language they speak, what their religion is, what they think, what they look like, if they are a boy or girl, if they have a disability, if they are rich or poor, and no matter who their parents or families are or what their parents or families believe or do. No child should be treated unfairly for any reason.

Article 12 – Respect for Children’s Views

Children have the right to give their opinions freely on issues that affect them. Adults should listen and take children seriously.

Article 19 – Protection from Violence

Governments must protect children from violence, abuse and being neglected by anyone who looks after them.

Children’s Rights at Saint Joseph’s Primary

As part of our journey towards achieving the Gold Rights Respecting School Award, we will be continuing to choose a different article/s from the Convention on the Rights of the Child each week to focus on and learn about.

Next Week our Right of the Week is Article 26 ( linked to Article 27)

Article 26 Social and Economic Help

Governments should provide money or other support to help children from poor families

.

Article 27 Food, Clothing and a Safe Home

Children have the right to food, clothing and a safe place to live so they can develop in the best possible way. The government should help families and children who cannot afford this.

Primary 6-5

Welcome back to Primary 6-5

We have had a very busy first term! Our topic this term was the book Wonder! We enjoyed finding out about Auggie and how we should never judege a book by it’s cover or a person by it’s face. In Literacy we wrote reports on ‘Treacher Collins Syndrome’ and on ‘Bullying’.  We also used descriptive language to write character descriptions on Auggie and on his sister Via. In HWB we  found out about Peer Pressure and Stereotypes. We also created our own book covers for the novel Wonder. In Maths we studied 2 and 3D shapes. In Numeracy we investigated place value, addition and subtraction and negative numbers! We loved our STEM challenges and our Digital masterclasses, where we found out how to use SWAY, Scratch and how to programme Spheros. We also loved using Word Publisher in our writing lessons. It has been a busy term.

WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY

This day is held each year on October 10th

World Mental Health Day is an international day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma. It was first celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organisation with members and contacts in more than 150 countries.

Each October, thousands of supporters come to celebrate this annual awareness program to bring attention to mental illness and its major effects on peoples’ lives worldwide.

One article provides a particularly strong link this week:

Article 24Every child has the right to the best possible health.

Governments must provide good quality health care, clean water, nutritious food, and a clean environment and education on health and well-being so that children can stay healthy. Richer countries must help poorer countries achieve this.

This Week in P6

Hi everyone, we have had a very exciting time this week. Our team won the Scottish National Finals of the Euroquiz 2021!

The Euroquiz is run by the Scottish European Educational Trust (SEET). It sees teams of four working together to broaden their knowledge of Europe and the wider world.

Team members  demonstrated an impressive level of knowledge about European languages, history, geography, culture and European affairs to finish 1 point ahead of; Strathblane Primary School in Stirling (2nd place) and 6 points ahead George Watson’s College Junior School in Edinburgh (3rd place).

Over 440 schools, involving over 2,200 pupils from across Scotland took part in Euroquiz Heats earlier this year, with the Saint Joseph’s Primary Linlithgow team;  winning the West Lothian heat in May to secure their place in the online finals.

Our team are delighted with their win!

We also made Jackson cubes in Maths and  created our own designs using recycled paper.
