Physics

CERN

  • Regular ( trips to Geneva to visit the CERN laboratories to learn about the standard model of particle physics, linking directly to higher physics course. Pupil engagement with CERN scientists and home tasks in preparation for the visit.
University of Glasgow
  • Particle physics masterclass for S6 pupils. On campus university experience for those interested in further study in a busy physics and astronomy school. Support for AH Physics projects by making labs and specialist equipment available, increasing the scope for projects.
University of Strathclyde
  • Support for AH Physics projects by making labs and specialist equipment available, increasing the scope for projects.
SSERC
  • Support for AH Physics projects by making labs and specialist equipment available, increasing the scope for projects.. Work placement and summer school opportunities available.
Institute of Physics
  • Resources for the teaching of N5, H and AH physics published. Scholarships, work placement and summer school opportunities available.

Biology

Edinburgh Zoo:
  • We run a Nat 4 trip to Edinburgh zoo. Students spend the whole day at the zoo completing workshops about conservation of animals. They also collect information on a chosen animal for their added value unit. We do some preparation work in class before the trip and then continue building on the learning after while completing the added value added unit.
  • The zoo also has a brilliant science summer school (for S5 and S6) – a week long course which allows students to experience research and conservation in the zoo.

Forth Valley College:

  • We run a two trip for AH to Forth Valley College where they increase their experimental knowledge. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to carry out experiments we can not do in school. The workshops are run by very experienced staff at the college and students gain experience of a ‘real teaching lab’ setting.

College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, Edinburgh University:

  • The college of medicine and veterinary medicine run public lectures throughout the year which we advertise to senior phase students. This is a great opportunity for students to learn about cutting-edge science from research and medical scientists.

Easter Bush Science Outreach Centre, Edinburgh University:

  • This is fantastic learning facility which runs school workshops throughout the year, we have previously taken a small group of Higher students to take part in an ELIZA workshop. They also have adult and family workshops and always take part in the Midlothian Science Festival.

Step into STEM:

  • An event for S2 students to meet local STEM employers. During this event students take part in interactive sessions and workshops. This allows students to have a greater understanding of how studying STEM subjects can give them the skills needed to work in different sectors.

Nuffield Research:

  • Offer student summer placements. We advertise this excellent opportunity to senior phase students, this placement can really enhance your university applications to science based courses and will allow students to gain an insight into a real working lab and to have hands-on experience in research.

SSERC:

  • Support for AH projects by making specialist equipment available. Provides fantastic CLPL opportunities for staff.
