My place/space is the dining room table which has become very much a communal area in the house not only for myself as an artist but for my two children and the family in general at meal times. I have several other fantastic photographs of this working space, of the children at breakfast surrounded by paint, sketch book, Egon Schiele and linseed oil! The children are comfortable in this space and often come and work along- side me as I work, the highlighter pens and drinking cup are a dead give- away. My son created his first oil pastel drawing here which is of a rainbow with pots of gold at either side of it. I am the figure in black, ominous?
‘Artists are always in search of a sense of place’, (Baldacchino, 2013)
Ron O’Donnell assembled a photographic image of an upended kitchen table, set in a tattered room with everyday objects on it; given human traits by the addition of clown feet, the table assuming the form of a body. ‘Still Life is Alive and Kicking’ depicts the use of an everyday dining room table with everyday objects on it, similar in some ways to my own place/space containing everyday objects but also objects of art and art making.. My art space is set to change and will be shared, as I strive to create a place conducive to the creation of artworks, somewhere which allows research and inquiry to take place and is an inspiring environment to ‘be’ in.
My art is made in my dreams, in my waking and sleeping; and on my dining room table. My place/space is a state of mind and a starting point from which to find identity and expression. It is a particular setting or place, dining room table, or no particular place, on a train journey to meet a friend, recording in a sketch book absorbing the countryside as it flies past. Or staring at a blank canvas and imagining what is going to appear. Fearful at times, excited at others.
My art in some ways is made through the children I teach as I see my ideas expressed through individual, imaginative inquisitive minds. I am inspired by them; and they by me?
