Statement of intent

VAP2 STATEMENT OF INTENT 9TH OCTOBER, 2013 DIANE PLENDERLEITH

Bearing in mind the spirit of the Artist Teacher Programme, which is very much premised upon the reinvigoration of one’s own creative arts practice, please state in the box below your intended aims over the period of this module. State in as much as it is possible where you intend ‘to go’, what form[s] of inquiry you intend to carry out and using what medium/media? Clearly, many of you will want to follow on from work developed in Year 1, if so, tell us how you intend to deepen your enquiry still further.

My artist/teacher inquiry this year will again focus on landscape and rich colour, only now exploring surface textures, allowing the work to become relief in places, layering, to achieve a sense of layering of the earth’s landscape. My Fine Art Degree was in sculpture and printmaking, therefore I naturally gravitate to relief and 3D; mark making and texture.

The work may take the form of both small scale and large scale studies which could become more and more abstract as they develop and evolve. I wish to challenge to what extend my work could be simplified yet still be of interest. To avoid becoming too prescriptive my intention is to become more expressive in the use of materials and allow for ‘happenings’ which can all too often be the most successful work.

Using Acrylic as a medium allows me to work quickly, as will materials such as PVA glue, tissue paper and other papers. Oil pastel is another medium which allows for various surface textures, rich colour and is a pleasure to work with, as colour blends but stays true in specific areas.  Recently I have also explored fused glass as a medium and would like to incorporate this into my work.

I look forward to the challenge of continuing my journey as an Artist/Teacher through the course of this year and sharing the experience with my Artist/Teacher colleagues at UWS, through all year groups, as well as colleagues in my Local Authority. This will be achieved by an updated on-line Blog/sketchbook journal and Voicethread discussion, (there is much to learn from collaboration and the support of peers).  Sketchbook work is an exciting vehicle for exploration and experimentation and is the source of concepts and individual creativity, becoming an essential element of my inquiry.

Still searching for a sense of place/space continues to be a personal challenge as one needs to be constantly surrounded by work which is on-going and offers inspiration and encourages productivity. To secure a place, in which to ‘be’ as an artist, is difficult, and one which many artists struggle with. Watch this space and my progress in year two.
