It is really interesting how one’s perception or appreciation of a piece of art work can change with just a little bit more in depth knowledge of it. Having seen the artist’s sketchbook/journal as a Blog entry I was able to experience this artwork from conception to full development and it really helped me appreciate the study. I saw this as more than a flower drawing, it is the investigation of a flower, through a series of studies, materials, simplification and development through to the realisation of a full blown final piece. There were suggestions in the sketchbook of how this artwork could have been developed and demonstrated the critical, reflective, analytical process which artists go through whilst in the process of producing artwork. I love the way it has changed and become an expression of the artist herself, not mearly a photographic image. I plan to share this Voicethread with my S5/6 Higher/ Intermediate students to discuss the investigation and development process and demonstrate how to work creatively with their sketchbooks. I will encourage my students to critically comment on this artwork and how it may effect their own practice and produce comments and evaluations in a further post. My Voicethread comments were similar but are as follows:

Having seen the progress of this piece though the artist’s sketchbook/journal Blog I have been able to appreciate it better and really love this artwork. The conception of the piece from a photograph, through to simplified, sometimes graphic images and the expressive developments of it to the final solution have been a journey of discovery. It is difficult to see how much work has gone into this study but it has gone through a transformation; it is not mearly a copy from a photograph but the artist’s expression of self. I’m unsure of the size of this image but it would look absolutely fantastic as a large scale study.
