At the start of the session we discussed the work of Matisse and Henri Moore which led into discussion on line and the different qualities of line. Looking for contrasts in line from straight to curved, dark to light and thick to thin. Again there was experimentation with materials in particular charcoal and ink with a stick, card, brush, then worked on top of with charcoal to suggest volume in the figure. Quick one minute sketches to suggest gesture and pose were also explored. The human figure is a living, dynamic entity and therefore should be drawn with energy and no defining outline. Encouraged to exaggerate the quality of line made for interesting drawings which may not be proportionally correct but which capture the essence of the figure.
