In the ninth session of the ‘Look and Draw’ series of workshops we were encouraged to set up a small studio space and become inspired by the work produced in previous sessions. The workshop began with a look at some Contemporary artists working in Collage then we set to work. The first collage piece taken from a previous drawing included a combination of torn and cut papers of various qualities. I attempted to use shades of paper to represent the tone within the drawing being studied and chose a warm palette with a hint of black and blue. A music score was added reminiscent of Picasso and Braque’s Cubist period. Within the second collage I focused on one area of the drawing and enlarged it using both the cut and torn paper once more. The second half of the session concentrated on egg tempura painting and we were encouraged to build up texture, scrape back into the painting or sample, or work on top of a previous piece. I covered a collage of a hat I had drawn with the rich colour, blending, scraping and scoring the surface of the work. Others within the group produced a small sample to explore the qualities of the egg tempura. It offered a sheen to the surface and dried quickly. This is a technique I hope to further develop over the coming weeks as I work towards my exhibition pieces.
