An emotional day at Stoneyburn

Today, after 30 years of service, we said a tearful goodbye to our dinner lady Mrs Connell.  She was a bit reluctant at first to come in to say cheerio to everyone in the hall but Stoneyburn staff and pupils said a lovely good bye to her before lunch was served today.

Mrs Connell received beautiful flowers from the boys and girls at Stoneyburn, presented to her by her grandaughter Madyson.  She was presented with a book full of pictures and memories of the school and the local community and more flowers arrived from Murrayfield Kitchen Staff as she used to work with the team there in days gone by.  The families of pupils from the school, many of whom had had Mrs Connell as their dinner lady when they were at school, had contributed to a collection for her. This was used to buy her a beautiful pair of earrings and these were presented to her by Mrs Cotterell, one of Agnes’ very good friends.  She received many other beautiful gifts from staff and pupils and this showed how much she was valued as a part of the Stoneyburn Primary School Community.

We wish her all the best for a long a happy retirement and hope that she won’t be a stranger to Stoneyburn and we will see her again in the future.

Happy Halloween

There was a lot of spooky looking folk around Stoneyburn Primary on Friday October 30th!  Everyone had lots of fun dressing up, bobbing for apples, playing games and parading around, showing off their fantastic fancy dress!

We hope the children’s family and friends enjoyed seeing the super costumes everyone wore to school on Friday- a fantastic effort was made by all and we would like to say a big thank you to everyone for that.  Congratulations to our Fancy Dress winners from each class, pictured below- we are not kidding when we say it was VERY difficult to choose the winners………the standard of dress was fantastic across the entire school!  The children had a great time at the party, as did the staff!  We hope you enjoy these pictures of some of the fun we had and hope you all had a wonderful, fun filled and safe Halloween this weekend.

P1/2 Literacy and Numeracy

Primary 1/2 have been very busy over the last few weeks learning lots of new sounds and developing their skills in numeracy.

Everyone has been working hard in Vowel House with their Literacy work.  P1 have been learning to say, recognise, write and use the letters ‘m’, ‘c’, ‘s’ and ‘p’.  P2’s have been learning about the ‘ee’ and ‘oo’ sound and another group in P2 have been introduced to the trickier ‘ai’ and ‘oa’ sounds.  Well done everyone.

Number work has been very exciting.  P1 have been working hard to learn numbers to 10 and have been doing lots of different activities with Mrs Gardinier.

P2’s have been working with numbers to 20 and have had to order these numbers forwards and backwards, carry out addition and subtraction sums and recognise these numbers in various games.

We have also been out collecting mini-beasts and recording the information we found in various ways, e.g. tally marks, dot patterns, pictures.  We then used the information gathered to learn about and create our own bar graphs.

Maths & Numeracy Open Morning

We had lots of parents and carers visiting Stoneyburn Primary school this morning to see some of the ways we teach Maths & Numeracy in school.  We were delighted with the number of visitors we had at today and the children loved showing their families the Maths activities in their classrooms.  For those of you who didn’t manage to make it along or for anyone who would like to have another look at the parent presentation from the beginning of the session, you can click on this link to have a look.Open morning presentation  If you have any comments on the session this morning, we’d love to hear from you on here as we plan to run more sessions like this in the future so we’d like to improve them in any way we can!

Fruity Friday – Back Again

Healthy-Fruits-And-Vegetables-Snacks-

Fruity Friday is back to help encourage people to eat a little bit healthier.  By eating fruit or vegetables for your snack its going to help keep your muscles strong, make your hair grow, keep your skin healthy, keep your heart healthy and gives you lots of good energy.
Fruity Friday has changed this year.

What is the same?

Every Friday pupils should bring in fruit or vegetables to eat for their snack.  Teachers will record this on Fruity Friday sheets.

What is new?

If you have fruit or vegetables for 5 Fridays you will get a Bronze certificate.
If you have fruit or vegetables for 10 Fridays you will get a Silver certificate.
If you have fruit or vegetables for 20 Fridays you will get a Gold certificate.
If you have fruit or vegetables for 28 Fridays you will get a Platinum certificate.

There will be a Fruity Friday Monitor for each class to make sure that winners get their certificates.

Fruit and vegetables can be eaten any day of the week for snack.  Let’s get into some good eating habits.

Fruity Friday starts on Friday 2nd October.

Number Hunt with P1s and P2s

Mrs Gardinier took some Primary 1s and Primary 2s out around the school grounds this morning.  We had a card that gave us things to look for and the number of each thing we had to find.  We had to find 1 flower, 2 sticks, 3 leaves, 4 stones and 5 nuts or seeds.  We worked in teams of two and three to find the objects and then check our cards at the end to make sure we had everything.  We had to practice our counting and organise the things we had in our baskets in to groups when we were checking things off on our list.  It was a sunny morning and we had a great time- as you can see form our pictures!

Our busy week

At the beginning of the week we learned about the different parts of a castle.  We learned about towers, battlements, turrets, drawbridges, moats and the portcullis.  We built and drew castles and Carla did a mini-project at home about her visit to Niddry Castle.  She brought in lots of photographs and told us all about them.

Later on in the week, we wrote a personal story about ‘When I was little’.  We had to think back to when we were a baby and think of something we did then that we don’t do now.  We had some very funny stories.  We had stories about nappies, dummies and rubber ducks in the bath!

Michael also brought in a magnifying glass for his news time.  He told us all about it and what it can be used for.  We decided we would like to go outside and go ‘mini-beast hunting’.  We found lots of insects including earwigs, ladybirds, worms and beetles.  They looked much bigger when we looked at them through the magnifying glass.
