P5 visit to Lime Kiln

As part of out Food and Health topic, Primary 5 visited the Lime Kiln restaurant on Wednesday. We had a tour of the kitchen, created our own salads, decorated biscuits and had a delicious lunch.

Primary 5 asked the chef and manager loads of great questions, here are some of the many things we found out:

‘I learned that different coloured chopping boards are used for different foods.’ – Luke M

‘I learned that the meat has to go at the bottom of the fridge because if it is at the top it might drip onto other foods.’ – Scott

‘I learned that the freezer is minus 18 degrees. We couldn’t stay in there for very long.’ – Abbey

‘I learned that they have up to 6 chefs when they are busy.’ – Shane

‘I discovered I like olive oil on salad.’ – Samuel

Thank you to all the staff at the Lime Kiln for an informative, fun and tasty visit!

Primary 4 celebrate on Diwali

After working hard for weeks, Primary 4 earned enough marbles to reach the top of their Farthing Wood chart. We celebrated with all our favourite activities including ocarina. Since it was Divali, the classroom had lights and flowers. Goodness knows who arranged the snow. It was all very exciting and the children all played and shared beautifully. Well done P4. Can’t wait for the next one.

Environmental Review Results

Mrs Stewart has read over our completed environmental reviews for this year and collated the results.

Here are the results.

We would like:
• Bins on the football pitch when it is completed
• Litter rewards/sanctions
• Playground equipment for climbing
• Shelter in the playground
• More activities/teaching about energy and waste
• Recycle more- lunch hall and kitchen waste
• Classes reminded to switch off electrical equipment after use
• Involve the community more in school life
• Outdoor vegetable planting

Some of these we can fix quickly and over the next few months we will be doing more to address them. Some of them will take longer and involve a lot of planning. However, we will see what we can do. Thank you for completing the reviews. We were sorry to hear that some classes had problems saving them. We will pass this information onto our eco assessor when she comes.

Primary 2/3, as part of their Health and Wellbeing topic, have been designing, making and tasting smoothies.

In writing we looked at a range of recipes and made up a recipe card for our delicious smoothie.

Ready, Steady, Cook!

For our Health & Well being focus Primary 6 have been looking at healthy recipes and practising their culinary skills. This week we made potato and leek soup. We got to taste a little in class and we took the left-over home in our containers.

We worked as a team to wash and dry once the vegetables were prepared.

Our potato peelings and leek ends were taken to our school compost bin.

We had to concentrate at all times!

Remembrance Service

It was lovely to see the Primary 6 pupils who attended the Remembrance Service at Livingston Kirk Church on Sunday. After the service, delivered by Mr Smith, Calum and Megan laid a wreath on behalf of all Meldrum Primary pupils and staff. It was an emotional day.

Members of P1, P1/2 and P3 worked hard to produce this wonderful autumn display. Some of the work was done collaboratively and required patience and perseverance. It has been put on the wall outside the Hall so it makes us smile on the way to the our lunch each day. A big thank you to Connor and Eryn in P6 who helped with some of the black outlining and cutting.

The eco reps have been busy doing weeding and litter picking around the school. 5 bags of weeds were gathered! These were then taken to the council composting facility because our compost bins are too full at the moment to hold them all. We shouldn’t now need to do any more weeding until the Spring and Summer. Litter picking is now the responsibility of the classes, following the rota. Remember ‘Don’t drop it, put it in your pocket. Be keen, clean and ECO GREEN!’

P7 cook up a storm!

This term Primary 7 are looking at Healthy Eating and trying their hand at cooking some healthy meals. Last week the class made a Tuna Cous Cous dish and this week the class were making Carrot and Coriander soup. Most of the class have been willing to try and taste their food and some have been surprised at the results!

Primary 7 will be cooking most Tuesdays this term so it would be useful if they could bring a container into school with them. This will allow all the the family the chance to sample their efforts!
