What a year P1G!

And just like that, it’s June…and we have finished Primary one!

Look what we have been getting up to this term!

Numeracy- This term in numeracy, we focused on practicing all that we had learnt this year and pushing ourselves to try even trickier sums!

Literacy- In literacy this term, we finished off learning all of our sounds and put these into practice during our writing lessons.

Beyond Number- In maths this term, we learnt about lines of symmetry. We painted our butterflies, folded them in half and watched how the prints were symmetrical. We also used mirrors to show lines of symmetry. We also learnt all about directions and I thought it was the best time to teach the children one of my school disco classics ‘The Cha Cha slide’. They absolutely loved it!

In technologies, Ms Jamieson was teaching us all about designing and building a village so we spent some time building a bridge to go over our river!

Our topic this term was Kings, Queens and Castles (we also looked at dragons!). We planned our own royal banquet, we learnt about all the features of a castle and used the wooden blocks to build our own!

Our topic in science was all about our senses. We went on a hearing walk to see what we could hear all throughout the school. We completed an obstacle course to show how important our eyesight is.

We spent a lot of time outside practicing our basketball skills in PE, completing a school litter pick and learning how to keep ourselves safe in Health and wellbeing.

I am so proud of all your achievements this year Primary one. I hope you all have a lovely well-deserved summer holiday! I would also like to say a huge ‘Thank You’ for all the lovely cards and gifts.

We have also been learning to tell the time on an analogue clock using o’clock and half past the hour.

We have been discussing how we make our writing more interesting by adding adjectives. We focussed on writing imaginative stories using descriptive words to describe a character. Mrs Howley and Miss Gorman were very impressed with our work.

Science – This term we learned about forces. We identified things you can push and pull in our classrooms and had great fun making ramps at various heights to determine if this made a difference to the distance when we pushed our cars down them. We also looked discussed what ‘prediction’ means and enjoyed carrying out an experiment and predicting what items we thought would float and what items would sink.

Primary one learning!

We have had a great first week back in person in P1! It was so good to see all our friends and teachers again.

In Numeracy, We enjoyed making our own pizzas in our fractions lesson and picking our favourite toppings. We were identifying halves and quarters of an amount and sharing items equally. Miss Gorman’s class enjoyed creating paper plate cakes and practicing sharing.

In literacy, we enjoyed lots of activities using our new sounds ‘ee’, ‘oo’, ‘l’ and ‘r’. We identified these sounds in words, made our own words using the new sounds and enjoyed working with a partner to play the literacy games.

In Health and Wellbeing, we discussed the food groups and identified healthy and not so healthy foods. We worked in groups to create plates of the foods we should eat all the time, sometimes, and only a little of the time. This activity made us all very hungry!

Mrs Howley’s class enjoyed a ‘Senses Scavenger Hunt’. We discussed our five senses and used this to find things we could see, hear, touch, taste and smell in our playground and in the classroom.

We learned all about Fairtrade on Friday and how we can help the farmers get a fair price for their goods. We looked at the Fairtrade symbol and the foods that we might find in our supermarkets that support this. We made our own Fairtrade lunch boxes.

Hope you have a lovely weekend and can’t wait to see you all on Monday!

Merry Christmas from Primary one!

And just like that, it’s Christmas!!!

We cannot believe we have finished another term in P1, where did the time go?

We have had a fantastic week doing Christmas activities. In literacy, we wrote about our own imaginary snowmen that came to life. We used descriptive language to describe what we did together and how it made us feel. We also made Christmas cards, focusing on the words we use and the layout.

In numeracy, we continued our learning of shape. We discussed the differences between 2D and 3D shapes; we sorted shapes into different categories and made Christmas pictures using the 2D shapes we learned. We also enjoyed making 3D structures using the building blocks.

Our class elf delivered another letter from Santa this week and he even sent us a video message of him delivering special gifts to our classrooms! Hooray, we all made it on the nice list!

Mrs Howley and Miss Gorman are so proud of all our achievements this term and said we all deserve a well-earned break! We hope you all have a lovely festive holiday! They would also like to say a huge ‘Thank You’ for all the lovely Christmas cards and gifts.
