P2/3’s Outdoor Classroom Day

P2/3 took lots of our learning outside to celebrate Outdoor Classroom Day. We had so much fun!

Literacy

We started with a walk round the school grounds to discover what we could see, hear and feel. The frost was probably the most talked about thing. The children talked enthusiastically about the patterns they found on the ground and the difference between the sunny spots and shady spots.  There was also much discussion around the frosted leaves, crunchy grass and melting ice.

Before we went out for a walk, we had got a message from Rosie the Bear.

We spotted Rosie’s picnic on the ground near the nursery and eventually found poor Rosie hiding up a tree. The children found lots of clues about what might have happened. Most thought it was the Gruffalo (or the Gruffalo’s child because Rosie wasn’t on a high branch), some thought a dog had frightened her, others a bird rustling in the trees and someone suggested it was us being noisy!

Numeracy

This week we have been looking at greater than, less than and equal to so this morning we worked in pairs to follow a range of instructions using words such as “big” “smaller than” and “the same size as”. Here are just some examples.

Hug something that is very big:

Find something about the same size as you:

Put three small things in a row:

Touch something big and small at the same time:

Dance around something that is bigger than a car:

We also used found objects to make number sentences using the greater than and less than symbols: < and >

Art

We ended the day with some nature inspired art.

For me, the best thing about the day was seeing and hearing the children as they talked to one another enthusiastically about the nature around them and the tasks they were working on, coming up with ideas, making links and working so well with one another.

The photos only show a fraction of the experience!

P2/3 Play

P2/3 got the chance this week to check out our fantastic new play area.

I observed so many fantastic interactions. These pictures will hopefully give you a flavour of the wonderful role-playing skills, creativity and social skills the children were demonstrating.

P2/3 Art

P2/3 have been learning about cold colours and hot colours over the last few weeks.

We began by linking our art to our work on The Little Iceberg at the beginning of the term. We used chalks and tissue paper to create our icebergs and we used crepe paper to make our cold colour fish.

We then looked at hot colours and used finger painting to blend the different colours together to create a painting of a campfire.

Finally, we combined and contrasted hot colours and cold colours .

They look really effective, don’t they?

P2 Snowflakes, Reindeer and Signing!

We’ve had a busy last week in P2!

We watched an excerpt of The Snawman, read by Matthew Fitt who translated the original Raymond Brigg’s story into Scots and then took part in a draw-a-long with author/illustrator Benji Davies. The illustration was taken from his book The Snowflake and was really quite challenging. However, the finished illustrations turned out beautifully! It’s well worth zooming in to see the detail.

We also made some fantastic Rudolph hats to watch our Christmas movie in.

And finally, P2 have been learning to sign We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Click on the link to watch us in action!

Wishing you all a merry Christmas and very best wishes for 2021!

P2 Update

Good afternoon all.

What a busy few days we have had! Yesterday we learned all about stamps and the children designed their own Christmas stamps (while listening to Christmas music). There were some fantastic designs. I hope you enjoyed seeing their ideas!

Today we were estimating and comparing weights…

And here are some photos from a couple of weeks ago of us using non-standard measures to see how tall we are and using metre sticks to find ‘things that are shorter/longer than a metre’.

Have a lovely weekend!

Quick Quack Quentin needs P2’s help!

This week’s sound was qu so it felt like the perfect week to read one of my favourite stories, Quick Quack Quentin by Kes Gray. If you’re not familiar with the story, poor Quentin has a very quick quack. He has lost his and can only say ‘qu ck’ so he borrows some ‘a’ sounds from other animals. However, they don’t want to share because their names sound a bit odd!

We took the vowels out of our names to see if we would like to help Quentin out…

In Beyond Number, we were using non-standard measures (our hands!) to measure items in the playground.

Why not try measuring some of the things you have at home?

P2 Maths

Hello everyone.

This week in Maths we have been comparing numbers using the terms and symbols for greater than and less than.  We worked in groups to come up with numbers to compare and then used our bodies to make the correct symbol. Photos uploaded okay on the blog so just scroll down to see them!

This song was also a bit of a hit. Feel free to play it at home as we can only clap along in class!
