Star Writers – The Snowstorm

Claire was taking her dog for a walk in the dark creepy woods. It was stormy and the trees were snapping down in the wind. Suddenly it began to snow and Claire caught some snow on her tongue. It was getting darker by the minute and the snow was getting heavier and heavier. It was like a twister. Her mum came to get her and her legs were shaking. She was petrified. The snow was going in Claire’s eyes and she couldn’t see where she was going. Finally Claire and her mum managed to reach home.

P4/3 conduct water experiments

As part of their learning the class split into groups of 4 and conducted some water experiments. They tried to find out which substances dissolved in water and which ones did not. They also tried to figure out where the substances went when they disappeared?

They learned that a substance which dissolves is soluble and creates a solution. They had great fun doing the experiments and I commend them on their behaviour during the science session.

4/3 Maths

Finlay reports that his group has moved onto place value and hundreds, tens and units.
Charlotte reports that her group has moved onto learning their tables 2-5 and 10.
Chloe’s group is adding and subtracting within 20.
Rory reports that he is dividing.
Mrs. Dunsmore reports that everyone is doing well.

Active Spelling

We had a visitor to our class this week. Mrs Angus came into our class to see our learning. We were all busy with our active spelling activities making words with the ‘u’ sound in the middle . We were doing lots of different activities including stamping to make our words, using plastic tiles and magic boards to write our words and also cutting and sticking pictures to the right word. If we were quick finishers we could also make our words in the sand. We all worked really hard to spell words with the ‘u’ sound in the middle.

P5 – Travelling Gallery Visit

P5 went to the library today and were lucky enough to visit the Art Bus which was parked outside too! We saw an exhibition called Waste Management that was all about recycled art. Some children sat on chairs made from wheelie bins and others admired a wooden sculpture carved from an old ornament. We hope to have as much success making eco-friendly crafts for our open afternoon.

3D Rainforest Animals

Primary 6 worked at home to make 3D rainforest animals from recycled products. As you can see they all worked really hard and the results have been fantastic. Some of the models will be on display at our enterprise afternoon on the 7th of December.

The Informers Newsletter

At the Informers after school club, we are learning how to make a newsletter. In our newsletter, we will be telling everyone about our success with the show box appeal, our school and class achievements and information about GLOW on the snow days (if we get any snow?!).
We are using the laptops to plan and design our informative newletter! Our newsletter will be up in the school and around various areas of the community for everyone to see!

P4/3 Posters

Children worked together to determine the success criteria of a good poster. A good bold title; colourful pictures and a clear message. Groups are still working on their conservation of water posters. They are following their own advice.

P4/3 Learning for week ending 11/11/11

The pupils in class 4/3 stood silent for 2 minutes at 11 am on the 11th day of the 11th month in memory of all the brave soldiers who had fought for our rights in the two world wars and the wars since then. All the children agreed it was a sad moment but they also felt glad because those soldiers have protected our way of life.

P4/3 also had a rewarding visit to the local library where they exchanged their books and had more time on the computers.

Measuring Egyptian homes and pyramids

 

Using a trundle wheel Primary 7/6 measured an outline of  the home of a nobleman, a tomb-builder and the height of the Great Pyramid of Giza.  The nobleman’s home measured 20m x 7m and the tomb-builder’s home measured 10m x 5m.  The height of the Great Pyramid is 146m. We ran out of space in the playground, only reaching 80m so that helped us understand just how enormous it must be. CHALLENGE: Calculate the perimeter of the nobleman’s house and the tomb-builder’s.
