P1-3 Hallowe’en Disco

 

 

P1-3 had a fantastic time at their Hallowe’en disco on Wednesday. As you can see from the photos everyone made lots of effort with their costumes including the teachers and parents. I’m sure this will make the P4-7s even more excited about their disco next week.

 

Primary 5 and 6

Calling all primary 5 and 6 pupils Miss Holley and Miss Weston need your help. After the school holidays we will be starting some exciting craft projects linked to our rainforest topic. To make this project a success we need you to bring in some items from home. We need toilet roll tubes, fruit juice cartons, cereal boxes and newspaper.
You will be rewarded with golden tickets if you manage to bring any of these items in so get collecting over the holidays! 🙂

Toucans

As part of our Social Studies topic ‘The Rainforest’ we have started to make 3D toucans. Today we worked in groups of 3 to papier mache a balloon. This will give us the shape of the body of the toucan. We will need to give our balloons another coat of papier mache before attaching the wings and beak. We will post pictures of our finished toucans after the holidays. Wish us luck!

Primary 6 Active Maths

P6 have been working hard planning their own theme park. They have had £500,000 to spend on rides, paths, car parks and toilets. They have now drawn a plan of their park onto squared paper. We are now going to write a leaflet to advertise our park. We got some really good ideas from looking at P7’s parks. Hopefully we will be able to show them how ours have turned out very soon.

Primary 6 Rainforest Acrostics

Primary 6 have written more great poems on the rainforest. This times we wrote acrostic poems spelling out ‘The Rainforest’.

T- There was a spiky flower that stung my leg as I walked along the forest flower, it stunk. I read in a book that it’s called a rafflesia.

H- Horrid nettles stung my arms and with fear I looked up above my head and I could hear a beautiful macaw soaring through the sky.

E- East, South, North and West my compass said. I looked around with fear when suddenly something bit my ear. It was a horrid spider, I shook with fear.

R- ‘Roar’ said the lion as it flew past me. I shouted with glee it’s orange fur was as bright as the golden sun, it was very fun.

A- As I walk through the rainforest I saw a beautiful butterfly flutter past me. It was orange, green and red it landed on my head.

I- In a corner I saw a snake it was yellow and red hanging above my head.

N- Now it was silent but not for long as a very loud gorilla ran along.

F- Further away I saw an enormous elephant walk through the jungle, it was a lovely sight.

O- On a leaf I saw a little lady bug, it was bright red and I think it was dead.

R- Rattle snakes slither past me as I sang with glee I suddenly stopped to let it pass me.

E- East I was walking and then I saw another marvellous macaw fly past me.

S- Suddenly a large lake splashed me and I was as wet as a fish in the sea.

T- Then I stopped, it was the end of my marvellous trip I shouted with glee it was finally me!

TIGER

T- Trudging through the rainforest were four big paws. Each armed with sharp and spiky claws.

H- Humidity was reaching twice the normal and fear was burning all the nearby life.

E- Elephants run into hiding spots. Trees shake as the monkeys swing away.

R- Red hot eyes like burning cities and pumas as black as mist.

A- An ocelote facing the other way stands watching the waterfall suddenly flashing white fangs tear into it’s neck.

I- In the upper layers the birds stop singing. The leaves crinkle back in horror.

N- Nostrils flaring like jet engines. Ears twiching like flapping bird wings.

F- Fog changes direction when it’s gaping jaws open.

O- Orange fur blazes in the sun and the black stripes streak across the body of the walking bullet.

R- Rouge tailed, it races through the trees stopping by the rocks of a cliff. Brazing it’s paws and tilting it’s head.

E- Echoing it’s roar across the forest ripping through the trees.

S- So now everyone knows it’s the king of the jungle as it stands on the top of the cliff.

T- The tiger is here and he’s hunting for blood.

Armadale Together for Health

Primary 6 were lucky enough to get invited up to the community centre today to take part in a health event. We looked at foods from around the world and how diets differ in different countries. We also had a lady from Quality Meat Scotland speak to us about why a healthy diet is so important.
Riley reminded us that there is a health funday on Sunday (2nd Oct) for all friends and family so if you are free pop along to the community.

Primary 6 Senses Poems

Primary 6 wrote some fantastic senses poems about the rainforest. They worked really hard on their poems and were able to include great similes and alliteration. Here is an example of a poem that Amy Rankine wrote.

Rainforest Senses Poem

As I creep as quiet as a mouse through the rainforest I smell the fresh blood from a predator that has sadly passed away. Wondering what’s going to happen I suddenly smell sweat dripping from my forehead. Wandering through the rainforest I smell the fresh water from the waterfall. Suddenly I smell the sweet ripe bananas.

Confused what’s happening I feel the spiders crawling up my arm. Above me I feel the tiger stand on my feet. Below me I feel the leopard’s fur tickle my bare leg. Then I turn and feel beetles crawling up arm.

Beside me I see the leopard racing a gazelle. Suddenly I see the tigers shadow in front of the horizon. Then I see a jaguar pouncing on its prey.
Up high I taste the salty air. And I suddenly taste the fresh blood. Then I taste salty sweat on my bottom lip. Suddenly I taste the stale dirty water.

Down below I hear a gorgeous gazelle eating grass. Then I hear a messy monkey drinking fresh milk from a coconut. I looked in front of me and heard a ferocious frog leaping on a lily pad. Suddenly I hear the wind whispering to me like a ghost in a graveyard.

Rainforest Senses Poem

Wandering through the rainforest I smell the brilliant bananas high up in the trees. I smell the slimy sweat running down my face. Scampering through the forest floor I smell the damp leaves blowing in my face. Climbing up the tall trees I smell the broken bark.

 As I walk through the muddy rainforest I feel the slimy snakes curling round my leg. I feel the lion’s lovely fur while I feed it some meat. I feel the rain pouring down on me I was wetter than a fish in the sea. I feel my heart beating faster than a cheetah because a tiger started chasing me.

 I see the shinning sun brighter than the moon beating down on me. I see a stamped of elephants coming towards me wondering if I will get trampled on or not. I see the buzzing bees flying faster than a jaguar trying to sting me. 

I taste the bananas that a monkey gives me. I taste the salty air as it blows my face. I taste the dirty water it was horrible I tasted it because I ran out of water. I tasted a perfect pineapple that I found on the ground.

I hear the marvellous macaws cawing louder than a giants voice. I hear the trees rustling in the wind. I hear the terrified baby tiger yelp because it was getting chased by a giant gorilla.

Rainforest Senses Poem by Rebecca Love

Wandering through the green rainforest looking at all the leaf bearing trees I see tiny bush babies glaring at me with their beady eyes. As I look deeper into the rainforest I see something glistening in the sun light it is a waterfall flowing as fast as a cheetah.

However when I look down I see a tiny beetle crawling up my leg like a tickly ant. As I wander through the rainforest more I smell the rotten rafflesia. Also I smell a gorgeous fragrance no other fragrance but an orchid. Suddenly a beautiful smell tickles my nose I think it is a bromeliad. Another smell I smell is the musky stench of rotten leaves.

 Suddenly I hear a croak from a tiny tree frog. I heard a heart breaking roar from a terrifying tiger. I hear a scratching from a lazy lizard above me on the tree tops. I hear a grunt form a greedy gorilla on one on one of the trees branches.

As I wander more I can taste a rotten smell from a murky river. I pick a banana from a banana tree and taste the flavours explode in my mouth. I taste the rafflesia smell too. I taste my sweat from my forehead falling onto my upper lip.

Primary 6 Social Studies: The Rainforest

Primary 6 have been learning about the layers of the rainforest. We have researched animals and plants that are found in each layer. In class we have made our own 3D rainforest with animals and plants. In pairs we also researched each aspect of our rainforest and typed up a description.

                                           

Primary 6 Learning

Primary 6 have made a great start to the term and have experienced lots of new learning. Our science topic is the solar system and we have been learning lots about the planets so far. We had a scavenger hunt where we had to collect facts about the solar system from around the playground. We also worked in pairs to make powerpoints. Our social studies topic this term is the rainforest and we have been learning lots of interesting information about it so far. We have been researching the different layers and have even made our own rainforest in class.
We will keep you updated on on what we get up to this week.

Pupil Council Meeting 30/6/11

Highlights of the year:
* P6- Sports week, swimming lessons, Gala Day and cycle proficiency.
*P7/6- Swimming, P7s enjoyed Kingswood and sports week.
*P4- Sports Week.
*P5- Sports Week.
*P7- Kingswood and the risk factory.
*1b – sports week.
*P5/4- Sports week and our election topic.
*P3- Class trip to Amazonia and the awards ceremony.
*P2- Summerlee trip and sports week.
*P3/2- Amazonia and PE.
*P1- Sports Week and Edinburgh Zoo.
*P4/3- Sports Week.

Improvements for next year:
*P7/6- All classes should get to go on a school trip. Real footballs to play outside with.
*P6 – Class trips. Could have a memory wall which all the P7s could do a hand print.
*P3- Bins on the pitch to stop the litter being dropped.
*P5/4- More school trips, decorating the toilets and pantomine. After school clubs (science, home learning, cooking and football)
*P1a- More toys outside (sandpit)
*P5- Class trips.
*P3/2- Connect 4 outside to play with. Paint the hall.
*P2 – Things to play with outside.
*P7- The P7s should be allowed to sit on the benches at assembly.
*P4- Change the displays in the hall.

After speaking to all the pupil council reps it is clear that most classes enjoyed the sports week and all classes would like to go on a school trip next year.

P5/4’s Learning

Tom, Brandon, Cameron C, Murray, Jamie, Rebecca, Scott, Robbie and Cameron B enjoyed playing handball in PE because they had never played it.
Chloe really enjoyed writing a newspaper report on Tudors. It was very interesting and we got to work in pairs on the laptops.
Lewis enjoyed learning about all the different election parties.
Anna, Robyn, Ben and Jayden enjoyed going to the library and getting to work on the computers.
Sarah, Emma and Mia enjoyed choosing a new book at the library.
Kayleigh enjoyed silent reading.
We learned about different types of punctuation during reading routes.
In maths cones learned how to subtract decimals.
We learned how to write a newspaper report.
We worked in teams to design a kids parliament.

We all had a good week and hope next week is the same!

School Council Meeting 8/6/11

Sport, Health and Fitness Week feedback:
* P2’s favourite things were cooking a stir fry, making a fruit kebab and sport day.
*P1’s favourite activities were the Judo, teacher rotation and the races finals. They learned how to make a stirfry, a fruit kebab and how to hula hoop.
P5/4 –Really liked making the class flag and doing the opening ceremony. They enjoyed doing the activities with the visiting specialists like karate, football and the dentist. It was a good week because everybody got to try out a new sport. Next year we would like some dance and gymnastics activities. The whole class had a lot of fun during the week.
P3/2- Judo, Karate and making fruit kebabs were the favourite activities. Preferred the 2 day teacher rotation this year and being able to try the different foods. Everybody is now drinking plain water after visiting the dentist and some are choosing fruit instead of crisps for break.
P7/6- In future get P7s to help make up the timetables and organise activities such as having a scavenger hunt. Was a well organised week.
P7- Enjoyed being responsible for helping at the P1-4/3 sports day. Good variety of sports and enjoyed tasting the different foods. Enjoyed watching the DVD at the closing ceremony.
P3- Enjoyed doing hula hooping and beat the goalie. Would like to do a cross country race next year. Football and the awards ceremony were their favourite things.
P6- Football, teacher rotations, healthy teeth, sports day and jog Scotland were the most popular activities.
P4 and P4/3- Liked tasting different foods and drinks. Would like it if we could get gymnastics and tennis next year. Liked the dentist because they learned a lot of new things. Some pupils didn’t enjoy the football as they found the dribbling skills a bit boring.

AOB
* Pupils would like to have a school football team.
* Pupils said the litter is getting out of control again so we should get the litter pickers started up again. J Gray stressed the importance of getting children to stop dropping litter and use bins provided.
*Would like to try and get the Healthy tuck shop back. *It was suggested that classes could choose their own topic to research for a few weeks.
*P7/6 suggested a week where children bring in a wellington boot to use as a planter to tie onto the fence. *Children want the quiet area to be opened back up. J Gray will check if it is safe to do so. *Girls suggested their bathroom needed repainted. * Children would like more flowers around the school. Mrs Gray suggested a bring a plant to school day which could be used around the school. The council thought was a good idea and it will now be discussed with staff.
*P7 pupils at Kingswood: Pupils really enjoyed Kingswood and all the activities they got to do. They got to go on quad bikes, a leap of faith, zip wire, do circus skills and nightline. The best activity was the 3G swing. Pupils said it was good to get a chance to do things that they might not do again and they got to mix with children from different schools. Each night there was an activity where all the pupils got together such as discos etc. Children got rewarded for going to bed on time with extra time the next night.
