Broad General Education

Business Enterprise

Throughout S1 and S3, pupils have the opportunity to look at different aspects of the business world. The aim of the Broad General course, is to provide pupils with an understanding of what influences businesses and the way they are set up and run. The pupils work through a number of different units including:

  • Scottish Entrepreneurs
  • Social Enterprise
  • Functional Areas- Marketing and Human Resources
  • Business Organisation
  • Taster Accounting and Finance unit prior to subject choice in S3

Digital Literacy / Computing Science 

Digital Literacy allows pupils to become familiar with the Microsoft suite of software and to develop skills that they will be able to use throughout the school. Pupils are taught in regards to file management and given access to Glow. As they begin to study Computing Science in S2 and S3 they are able to tackle more complex concepts such as coding, web design and animation. This gives them a taste of the national qualifications course that they may choose to study in S4 on wards. The pupils work through a number of different units including:

  • IT Packages
  • Computer Systems
  • Animation
  • Web design
  • Coding

Design and Manufacture

S1-3 Design & Manufacture allows pupils to have an introduction to how designers think. The aim of the Broad General course, is to provide pupils with an understanding of what Design & Manufacture is, and how products are design and developed through the stages of the Design Process. The pupils work through a number of different units including:

  • Design Factors
  • Evaluation Strategies
  • Creative Thinking Strategies
  • Design & the Environment
  • 2D & 3D Sketching Techniques
  • Materials & Manufacturing Processes

Graphic Communication

Through S1 to S3 the aim of the Graphic Communication course is to allow pupils to explore graphical techniques and their application. The graphics course allows pupils to use manual and computer aided forms of drawing in addition to developing their knowledge of colour theory.

This is achieved through pupils learning experiences through the following components:

  • Pictorial Drawing (1pt Perspective, 2pt Perspective, Oblique and Isometric)
  • Orthographic Drawing (3rd angle projection, British Standards, Geometric Drawing with surface developments)
  • 3D Computer Modelling (AutoCAD Inventor, Solid and Surface Modelling, Environmental Rendering)
  • Desk Top Publishing (Xara Professional, Colour Theory, Elements and Principles)

Practical Craft Skills

In S2 our pupils have the opportunity  to gain confidence and dexterity in the use of materials, tools and equipment and apply these skills to make quality products in both metal and wood.

Pupils will have the opportunity to manufacture:

  • Acrylic – Key Fobs
  • Acrylic – Phone Holder
  • Aluminium – Tool Tray
  • Wood – Xmas Tree Decorations
