  • take into consideration the design and record its functional requirements, operation and use
  • consider the relationships between form and function, and the impact of the design in terms of environment, aesthetics, user interface, and socio-economic factors
  • explore the materials, manufacturing techniques and assembly procedures.

Design and Manufacture: Product Development (8 SCQF credit points)

In this unit you will:

  • critically explore and consider design and manufacturing aspects of an existing commercial product
  • consider modifications that might be made to the product
  • identify a design opportunity through exploring designing and communicating improvements
  • present your ideas, through research and development, and visualisation activities.

Design and Manufacture: Product Evolution (8 SCQF credit points)

Assessment:

Course assessment (8 SCQF credit points)

The course assessment consists of two components with a total of 200 marks:

  • Component 1: project (120 marks)
  • Component 2: question paper (80 marks)

For the project you will be asked to develop a solution to a complex design and manufacture task.

The question paper will be set and marked externally by SQA.

Your work will be assessed by your teacher on an ongoing basis throughout the course. You must pass both units and the course assessment to gain the course qualification.

The course assessment is graded A-D. Your grade will depend on the total mark for all the units in your course.
