This course is designed to follow on from the S3 Preparation for Nat 5 course.
The National 5 Mathematics Course consists of three units of work –
- Expressions & Formulae
- Applications
- Relationships
With recently updated SQA guidelines, pupils no longer have to pass each Unit Assessment in order to proceed to the final exam. In Balfron High School, for each unit, pupils will sit an Extended Unit Test (EUT). This assesses pupils at exam level for each of the topics covered in a unit and provides much better preparation and a more realistic indicator of performance in the prelim and final SQA exam.
Please note that pupils can only be put forward for a single level of award. This means that those pupils in S4 that fail the final National 5 SQA exam with less than a grade of D will receive no recognition for their efforts. As a result, it is important that we make a good decision in February or earlier, prior to the SQA exams, whether to present pupils for the final exam, or to change to either National 5 Applications of Maths or National 4 Maths. We recommend that pupils scoring below 30% in the prelim change to Applications of Maths or National 4.
