Home Learning 8.5.20

Good morning everyone 🙂

I hope you all had a great weekend with your families🌈 I would love to hear what you got up to.

Also, Mrs McGarvey has now confirmed the details for this year’s Burnside’s Got Talent! If your child is interested in participating record a video or take a picture of their talent (people have chosen to sing, dance, play an instrument, tell a joke or perform gymnastics, football skills and magic tricks in previous years) and tweet the video or photo of their performance on Twitter between 15th and 19th June. Tweet @burnsideprim and we will retweet. There will also be a special certificate on the app/Twitter for you to download as a thank you for your child’s participation. I can’t wait to see what they come up with!

CHALLENGE ACTIVITY – Ask your child to write a sentence for each word. Remind them to use V.C.O.P. (Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers, Punctuation) to uplevel their sentences. Here are some ‘sentence stretching ideas’.

VCOP
This week we are going to focus on connectives. In P2, I am looking for your child to be able to join two sentences with the word ‘and’. We have a rule in our class that in our writing, we use a maximum of two connectives in our sentences. Otherwise we forget all about full stops and we write and, and, and all the way through to make one giant sentence. Below are two activities to work on this.

Using ‘and’ to Join Sentences

Hot

Using ‘and’ to Join Sentences

Some of us are already very good at this and are starting to also use connectives like ‘because’, ‘but’ and some others. Here’s a challenge option.  You must choose which fits best ‘and‘but’ or ‘because’.

Activity 2 – 3D Shapes
I know we have looked at 3D shape already since we began Home Learning. However, I do suggest the extra practise as shape in particular can often ‘fall out of our heads’ when we don’t revisit and 3D is a bit trickier.

If your child is very confident doubling and halving they can try this game to challenge them and encourage quick recall. It gives the option to choose a higher number range and you can increase or decrease difficulty.

June Mini Topics
I am going to provide a choice two different focusses for our ‘Mini Topic’ in June. You can pick one of these to focus on and learn about, you can do both or you can dip in and out of both. Again, this is an overview of suggested activities. You can do these or you can think of your own ideas relevant to the topic. These topic webs make reference to some resources. I’ll link these in the ‘Social Studies’ tab at the top.

Fantastic Fridays

Good Morning boys and girls (and grown ups) 🙂

I hope you have all had a lovely week. It has been nice to finally see some friends and family outdoors hasn’t it? A little change but I’m sure it has helped to cheer us all up. You have all been busy bees from the looks of our check in station and the photographs I’ve been sent. Well done⭐️

Below are some of this week’s pictures.

OM has been working hard over the last few weeks making planters to deliver to his family. Don’t they look great? And what a kind thing to do! I’ve told him he’ll need to teach me a thing or two about gardening now 🙂

LM wrote a wonderful Superhero comic strip this week! It’s very creative and I really love all of the detail in her speech bubbles. Well done L⭐️

AMc had fun trying one of our Wednesday challenges. She built her own den with her little brother! They both had great fun and loved playing in it afterwords. Fantastic job A👌🏻

CT (now 7!) had a great birthday week. He lucked out with the weather and fun in his paddling pool 🙂 He has also been busy doing some of the superhero tasks and workouts. Well done C!

I hope you all have a fabulous weekend! Make sure to leave a birthday message for our special birthday girl this week🥳

Wednesday Challenge

Good Morning everyone ⭐️

This week I am challenging you to get your chef hats on. Lots of you have already been very busy in the kitchen since being at home and I am loving it!  Your challenge is to make something at home (with your grown ups help) and write a recipe to go with it. You could cook something tasty for lunch/dinner or do some baking.  You could even do more than one dish and create a menu.

Below are some ideas I found online to give you some inspiration. Don’t forget about creating the recipe 🙂

Have fun being Master Chefs!

Virtual School Trip – Superhero Academy

Scroll down for this week’s main home learning post 🙂

Image Result For Super Second Grade Clipart - Welcome Superheroes ...

Thanks to Miss Ferry, this week we have all earned a place at Superhero Academy 🙂

You have all acted like superheroes recently and definitely earned a spot at Superhero Academy! The world could do with a few more real life superheroes right now so let’s get started!

University of Derby on Twitter: "Our Superhero Academy will be ...

Welcome to Superhero Academy! You have a series of missions to complete to become a real life superhero. Good luck!

Mission One

First things first, you’ll need to create a superhero identity. Come up with a superhero name of your own or use the Superhero Alphabet below to work yours out.

Now that you have your superhero name you’ll need a costume. You can use this Superhero Costume sheet to design your own superhero costume. If your grown-ups say it’s ok you could find bits and pieces around the house to make a real life version of your creation. There are links below if you would like to create your own superhero mask or shield.

Superhero Mask

Superhero Shield

I would love to see pictures of your costumes!

If you want to create a costume similar to one of your favourite superheroes you could use the links below.

Create Your Own Guardian of the Galaxy Costume

Mission Two

Superheroes have to be very fit and healthy. To get you in superhero shape, Iron man is sharing the Avengers TOP SECRET workout with you.

If you enjoyed that workout or fancy something different you can try some more superhero workouts below.

Avenger’s Tabata Workout

Now that your superhero fit its time to put your training into action. Set up your own superhero obstacle course to show off your skills. Your obstacle course should allow you to practice the skills listed below but it is up to you how you do it! I would LOVE to see photos of your obstacle course. You can email them to me at the usual address 🙂

  • jumping
  • climbing
  • crawling
  • running at super speed
  • balancing
  • super strength
  • throwing with super duper aim

Mission Three

You can’t be a superhero without some superpowers. Have a think about what superpowers you would like to have and use the Superpowers sheet to write them down.

Flying

My son... Sidewalk chalk superhero invitation pic (With images ... Picture Perfect Photo Props for Babies, Toddlers and Families ...

Create a skyline picture on the ground using chalk and then lie above it. Have a grown-up stand somewhere high and take a picture. It will look like you’re flying through the air 🙂

Super Strength

Can you show off your super strength by breaking through a ‘brick’ wall made from cardboard boxes or shoe boxes.

Laser Vision

The bad guys have trapped one of your favourite toys in ice. Can you figure out a way to melt the ice and free your toy?

Laser Vision Activity

Kindness

Kindness is the best superpower! Here are some acts of kindness you could do.

Be a Super You Acts of Kindness

Superpower Science

Older children might enjoy finding out the science of superpowers. TED Ed have a series of videos on YouTube explaining the science behind superpowers and how scientifically realistic they are. It’s aimed at older children so grown-ups might want to check out the videos beforehand.

Superhero Science

Mission Four

All superheroes have their own comics. You can choose whether you would like to create yours online or create a paper version.

Online Link – Make Your Own Comic (click on getting started for instructions)

Paper version – Superhero Comic Template

Mission Five

Saddleback Church: MAP: The Paradox of Being a Hero

No superhero would be complete without a sidekick to look out for them. I’m sure there are lots of everyday heroes in your life that have made you the brilliant wee superhero you are! What better way to say thank you than to use your coding skills to turn them into a superhero too.

Create Your Own Everyday Hero

Mission Six

Now that you’re a real life superhero, I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re asked to be in a Lego movie. You can make you’re own Lego Superhero here so that you’re prepared for any offers.

Mission Seven

Superheroes have to be good at helping others and being kind. Your final superhero mission is to be a ‘Hero Helper’.

  1. You’ll need three Hero Helper Tokens, you can print and cut these out or make your own.
  2. Give the tokens to people in your family.
  3. When someone in your family needs a little help they give you the token back and you help them in return. This could be something as simple as setting the table or helping tidy up.
  4. When you have all three tokens back you have completed this mission.

Well done you have completed Superhero Academy!

Home Learning 1.6.20

Good morning everyone 🌞

I’m not sure how it’s possible that we are in June already! But here we are in our last month of school – a little bit different to our normal last month of school but I promise we will try to make it as fun as we can.

I hope you all had a great weekend with your families🌈

Below is this weeks suggested learning tasks. Remember just to do whatever suits your household best and if you have a spare minute I’d love to see all of your fantastic learning.

As I mentioned last week, keep thinking about BGT and if you have any talents you would like to share. Last week I mentioned there would be no audio options, however we think we have a way around this now. So you can share any talent you wish including singing, jokes, musical instruments etc

If you want to take part, you do not have to send in any video clips in just yet – I’ll let you know when 🙂 But get thinking!

Circles – Stick to numbers below 20 unless you are feeling really confident.

Subtraction

Mixed Learning (combining last week’s and this week’s learning)

Activity 2 – Time

Time is one of those ones that is great to learn at home as it’s everywhere. You don’t need to stick to this formal learning, you can do lots of oral work an it on a day to day basis. Wearing a watch is great as you can ask them the time at any point in the day 🙂 (o’clock and half past of course).

All Groups

Telling the Time to Half Hour

Half Hour Later  (Challenge)

Analogue and Digital

Last week we were looking at days of the week, months of the year and the calendar. I’m going to leave this here for anyone who might not have had a go yet. I really recommend ensuring your children are confident with this. Another good thing to do surrounding this is  learning and memorising their date of birth. You could do this in any way, maybe making a nice picture/poster.
Months of The Year
Days of The Week

Extra challenge for squares (or anyone who feels very confident/secure in the above tasks)
Using a Calendar Game

Activity 3 – Data Handling

Bar Graphs

(In this document, they describe ‘block graphs’. Your child will know these as ‘Bar Graphs’ and we began learning about this before schools closed).

These workbook pages can be completed orally, on paper or in the home learning jotter.

On page 30, when children are asked to make a lunch graph for their class, if possible, ask family members and complete the graph (like the one shown on the workbook page) in the Home Learning jotter or on paper.

Activity 4 – Counting
Rounding to the Nearest 10. You can complete these tasks orally, in your home learning jotter or on paper 🙂
