Disneyland

Thanks to Miss Ferry, this week we are off to the most magical place on earth because who doesn’t need a little bit of magic just now!

Today’s lessons are brought to you by all your favourite Disney characters. There are a few virtual rides along the way that might be more realistic if you can cast them to your television.

First things first, let’s find out What Disney Character Are You?

Now you know who you are, hop aboard Aladdin’s magic carpet ride and make your way to Disneyland. (Watch until 2 mins 18 seconds)

Home Learning 18.05.20

Good Morning boys and girls (and grown ups) 🙂

Welcome to another week of home learning. I hope you had a nice weekend whether you were relaxing or keeping busy! I will be helping out in Calderwood this week so I may be slower than usual to reply to messages – but please do still send them. I love seeing what you have all been up to. Here’s the email if you haven’t had a chance yet;

gw18burnsidephotos@glow.sch.uk
(Remember to put Room 4 Miss Laidlaw in
the subject box)

Friday and Monday is another Holiday weekend (Already? I can’t believe it either!) so there won’t be anything up on those days and you can have break from learning.  Any photos sent in will still make it on the blog on ‘Terrific Work Thursday;)’ this week.

Birthdays
We usually always love to celebrate Birthdays in Room 4. If you are having an ‘at home’ birthday this year, please feel free to let me know. I am sure your friends would love to leave a message to wish you all a Happy Birthday!

Support
You may have noticed I have been adding pages to the blog as we go along. If you have a minute to browse there are some handy resources. Particularly, in the ‘support’ tab (Thanks Miss Ferry!) . I know that this is a tricky time for both the children and the grown ups – I hope that this is helpful.

Reading and Writing

(These activities can be split over a couple of days)

Personal Reading (15-20 mins daily if possible) Check the reading tab at the top of blog if you are limited with reading book options at home. There are some great ebook options.

Talking and Listening

Some different ideas for talking and listening activities at home. The boys and girls love the following directions style listening activities we have done in class so I have tried to find similar to those (unfortunately ours are still in the building 🙁 ) My favourite one is the 5 minute quiz (there’s a funny trick at the end to check they are truly following the instructions) but some of the groups may need help from a grown up to read through it.

These reading prompts could also be helpful to discuss a book that your child has been reading.

Most of the boys and girls in the class have read a book called ‘How to Make a Bird Feeder’ as their school reading book. We were planning on having a go at putting this in action in class and then hanging them up in the playground. In the book they used pinecones and rolled them in peanut butter which you could easily do at home 🙂 but obviously this isn’t something we would have been able to use in school so there are lots of other  easy ideas.

We were going to use popcorn 🙂

Home Learning W/B 11.05.20

Good morning boys and girls, I hope you all had a lovely weekend and managed to make the most out of the lovely weather we’ve been getting 🙂 As always grown ups, do whatever is manageable. I will hopefully have the tabs above updated this week to include different activities across the curriculum if you are looking for extra things to do. They won’t be fully completed as I will just keep adding to them as we go.

As usual, send any pictures of the learning throughout the week before Friday afternoon for our ‘Fantastic Work Fridays’ and If there is anything I can help with please email me. Remember that this address is used by all of the classes, please put Miss Laidlaw Room 4 to ensure I don’t miss any.

Reading

Remember to try  20 minutes of personal reading each day. If you are limited at home with reading books, I have collated some online reading/eBook resources in the tab at the top or you could read comics, blogs, magazines and personal fiction/non-fiction books you have at home. Below are some reading activities that can be done with personal reading (there are lots more on the ‘reading’ tab).

This week I thought our reading and comprehension could link in with our Dinosaurs topic.
Click the link below for the correct group to find a PDF to read all about dinosaurs. Try to answer the questions in complete sentences.

Writing

This week’s writing task is to write a letter to someone that you are missing right now. It could be a friend, family member, someone from school or someone from a club. You could   tell this person what kind of things you are missing and what you’re most looking forward to when we no longer have to stay home. You could also tell them what you have been doing to keep busy. Think about all of the things a letter needs and of course remember all of our writing targets like wow words, connectives, capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.

Spelling

* Say, make/break, blend, read and write your words.
* Suggested spelling activities are at the top of the page
* Remember to test yourself on how much you remember at the end of the week and practise any you still find tricky.

Activity 1 – Counting
New pods for everyone this week (as well as the shape ones that should still be there) is a variety of ‘counting’ activities to revise.

Hope you got on ok with last weeks Shape revision on study ladder and managed to remember lots. I will leave those pods active so that you can continue these if you haven’t managed to have a go yet. Here are some more activities to keep practising.

Just like this, you can have a shape hunt around your house to see what 2D shapes and 3D shapes you can find and sort.

Click the link to find a few 3D shapes worksheets – All About 3D Shapes Worksheet

Just like this worksheet, you can draw 2D shapes, label with their name, number of edges and number of vertices (the pointy corners).

Weekly Check In

Good morning boys and girls🌈

Pop up a little message with the help of your grown ups to say hello.

A very short week this week! I won’t be posting a Fantastic Work Friday this week, however all the pictures that have been sent in will be joined up with next weeks pictures. To those who sent a lovely message or picture for Mrs Anderson’s birthday, I sent her them on Monday and she said  they made her day 🥳  I know there were some other birthdays at the start of this week too (Sophia and Rory, if I’m not mistaken) I hope you both had a lovely day!🎈

Have a lovely long weekend of fun!

Miss Laidlaw

Wednesday Challenge

Hello everyone

Time for this week’s challenge
THE RAINBOW CHALLENGE

This weeks is a little bit easier than last week and it’s a lovely one. I bet you have noticed a lot of rainbows when you are on your walks. You have maybe even made one for your window at home!

Rainbows are a sign of hope just now, something to make us all smile and to let everyone working hard know that we are really proud of them. Also, to let our friends and family know that we miss them. SO, this week I am challenging you to create a wonderfuly unique rainbow in a different way from drawing or colouring.

Here are some examples I have found:

Nature                                                                                    Lego

Cut and stick

Baking

Iron on beads    or pipe cleaner 3D rainbow

Some other ideas could be to use things you have lying around your house and garden to make a huge rainbow on the ground. You could also do a science experiment to make a rainbow  (google has loads). I’m planning to make a rainbow tye-dye t-shirt so you could also do something like that.

When the time to stay home is over and we see a rainbow in the sky, I hope that it’ll always remind us of how lucky we are to be able to do all of the things that we are missing right now.

Have fun boys and girls – I can’t wait to see your wonderful creations!

Miss Laidlaw❤️🌈

Monday 4th May – Make a Planisphere

What is a planisphere and why would we need one to look at the night sky? You’ll see how you can make a planisphere with our handy planisphere print out. We will show you how to use the planisphere for backyard astronomy. You’ll need the planisphere print out (download below), some scissors, blu tack, a split pin (or similar) and some adult permission and supervision. Most suitable for budding astronomers aged 7 and over. View on YouTube.

Download the planisphere print out.

Tuesday 5th May – The Monty Hall Problem

Probability has never been so much fun! Explore the ‘The Monty Hall problem’ with us – will you decide to ‘stick or switch’ when the odds of winning a prize change? The chances of this maths problem being a hit are stacked in your family’s favour! For a further probability activity to try out afterwards you’ll need a pack of playing cards. Fun for everyone with science and maths over 7s will enjoy! View on YouTube.

Wednesday 6th May – Straw Oboes

Strike the right note for a tuneful family activity! Learn about how sound travels, how we get different pitches and make your own straw oboe. To join in at home, you’ll need some paper or plastic straws, some scissors, and adult permission and supervision. Ideal for ages 5 and over.

Thursday 7th May – Coat Hanger Clanger

Tune in for an entertaining exploration of how sound travels through different materials. You can try this out at home! You’ll need some string, a sturdy ‘wire’ metal object like a coat hanger, whisk or the top of a grill from a cooker (minus the steak!). Plus you’ll need adult permission and supervision. Ideal for ages 5 and over.

Friday 8th May – Make Your Own Codebreaker

Learn about cryptography and find out how to send and receive your very own secret messages. You will need some paper, a ruler, pens or pencils, scissors, and some adult permission and supervision. Most likely to appeal to over 7s.
