Shetland/Scottish Dance

P3B recently finished a block of Shetland and Scottish Dance in PE.  We covered several dances, learning that dances are made up of small sections which are repeated.  We also discovered that once we have learnt an action, it can be done in a variety of different dances.  For example, we learnt to cast off in the Grand Old Duke of York and then repeated this part in 2 other dances.

The dances we learnt were

  • Circassian Circle
  • Norsk Polka
  • The Ferry Boat
  • Grand Old Duke of York
  • Witches Reel
  • Waves of Troy
  • Boston 2 step
  • Gay Gordons with a modified hold
  • St Bernard’s Waltz

We finished the block making up our own Shetland dances.  Here we are in action.

Up Helly Aa 2025

We had the most amazing time experiencing Up Helly Aa this year, embracing our Shetland culture.

Alongside 3A we travelled to the street to watch the morning procession.  We joined in with the excitement; cheering and singing. We even got a brilliant view of the Jarl’s presentation as he passed the Albert Building and the Lerwick Port Authority.  We ended our trip with a fantastic view of this years galley and watched as the Jarl Squad got their photos.

On return to school we had the delights of seeing both the Junior and Senior Jarl squads in the gym hall. We sang with delight and saw their outfits up close.
