Outdoor Learning

We enjoy regular outdoor learning in Primary 1A, we have 1-2 dedicated outdoor sessions per week in addition to additional outdoor play opportunities all day. We have been using our communicating metaskills of talking about memories and experiences upon returning to class in addition to linking our knowledge of how our local landscape has changed over the seasons and course of Primary 1.

‘I found a shell that had patterns on it and she found one that looked like the other half!’
‘I like the feeling of the sand, it makes me calm to come to the beach!’
‘Outdoor learning is my favourite time of the week!’

Games

We have continued working on games in PE, but with more of a focus on games with equipment.  We have been mainly using balls, working on aiming, throwing, catching, tracking the ball and basic attacking and defending skills.  We have loved the block.

Reading Week & SMUHA

Wow! Primary 1A have had a fantastic week celebrating reading and enjoying a range of stories. Miss Henry read us the Shetland Dialect Book ‘The Ooricks’ and we designed our own ‘Ooricks’. We had a Shetland Gruffalo Bookbug with Chloe from the Shetland Library with P2 and we all took home a book from the school book swap. We have been listening to audio books and practising our skills of listening without seeing pictures. We have been reading non-fiction books related to our IDL Topic – Growing.

We also enjoyed a visit from the SMUHA Jarl Squad today where we took a class photo at the Galley.

Games

We have been doing games in PE.  We are aiming to develop  understanding of movement and positioning, cooperation and perform some basic skills in simple contexts.

Here we are working together.

Childsmile Visit –

This morning we enjoyed a visit from Claire at Childsmile who taught us about why teeth brushing is important and what are healthy snacks at breaktime at school.

In Primary 1 we continue to brush our teeth at breaktimes supporting healthy oral health.

Chinese New Year

This week in music we have been learning about the importance of music during Chinese New Year. As part of our learning we watched a Musical Storyland episode called ‘The Great Race’ by BBC Teach, where members of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra play a range of instruments and tell the story.  We saw a new Chinese instrument called a guzheng which is played by plucking the strings.  You can see all the instruments in the picture below.

We also learned that this year is the year of the dragon and in the clip below, you can see us using scarves to move like the dragon dancers that perform at Chinese New Year celebrations.

UHA 2024

Tuesday 30th January 2024 was a special day at Sound Primary School as we were visited by both the Junior and Senior Jarl Squads of 2024.

The Junior Jarl Squad, led by Guizer Jarl Skeppare Nokkvesson (aka Oran McCulloch), were in fine voice during their time with us, supported by a group of young local musicians who did a brilliant job. ‘Yes Sir, I can Boogie’ was definitely a highlight! The clip below shows all the pupils from p1 to p7 joining in with the Up Helly Aa song.

The Senior Jarl Squad, led by Guizer Jarl King Harald Olafsson (aka Richard Moar) were also pretty spectacular both in sight and sound. A fantastic line up of local musicians provided the music for the Up Helly Aa song and also their squad song which made us all want to get up and dance! Here is a clip of all the pupils from p1 to p7 joining in with the Up Helly Aa song. The Jarl commented how loud and enthusiastic our singing was. High praise indeed from a ‘King’!
