Athletics

We have finished the term doing Athletics in PE.  With only three weeks, we focused a week each on the three areas of the sport – running, jumping and throwing.  Each week we also completed a 5 minute run, building up to being able to run a 400m, once round the track, at sports day.

Here are some pictures of our 5 minute run and our sprinting work.

Beach Trip

Last week P5A went to the Sands of Sound beach.  Our topic this term is Stories of the Sea so we were interested in gathering shells to use in a display for our Stories of the Sea Museum and checking the beach for plastic pollution.

Pupils stated that learning outdoors at the beach had helped them focus and lift their mood whilst working collaboratively to search for beach artefacts to display back in the classroom (all very important meta skills). They also stated that they enjoyed adapting to learning in a different environment and spending time outdoors with each other, even though it was a cold, blustery day.

Badminton

P5 have been playing badminton in PE.  We have worked on a lot of individual skills and basic hitting with a partner.  We also spent some time on creating a practice that developed our aiming that the other groups then had a go at.  Here are a few pictures of those practices.

Reading Week

This week P5A have been taking part in a range of activities to celebrate World Book Day on 7th March. These included:

  • When the school bell rang, we could all participate in whole school reading.
  • We made a display for our door based on our class novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
  • We read the Shetland dialect book ‘Myrtle an Meenie’ by Ann Marie Anderson.
  • We went to the school Book Swap and had the opportunity to take a book home which had kindly been donated.
  • We watched and took part in the the “Footy Booky” quiz.

It’s been a great week of activities, sharing our love of reading.

SMUHA

Today is South Mainland Up-Helly-Aa and we were lucky enough to get a visit from the Jarl and his squad. They even brought their galley for us to see. They all looked fantastic and performed a medley of songs as well as the famous Up-Helly-Aa song.

Sphero Coding

We were lucky enough to have Eleanor Hutcheon from UHI in our class yesterday. She introduced the class to Sphero Coding.  This session taught pupils the concept of  algorithms and how precise they need to be.  Pupils  explored maths concepts including speed/distance/time and angles to direct their Spheros where they wanted them to go.

UHA 2024

Tuesday 30th January 2024 was a special day at Sound Primary School as we were visited by both the Junior and Senior Jarl Squads of 2024.

The Junior Jarl Squad, led by Guizer Jarl Skeppare Nokkvesson (aka Oran McCulloch), were in fine voice during their time with us, supported by a group of young local musicians who did a brilliant job. ‘Yes Sir, I can Boogie’ was definitely a highlight! The clip below shows all the pupils from p1 to p7 joining in with the Up Helly Aa song.

The Senior Jarl Squad, led by Guizer Jarl King Harald Olafsson (aka Richard Moar) were also pretty spectacular both in sight and sound. A fantastic line up of local musicians provided the music for the Up Helly Aa song and also their squad song which made us all want to get up and dance! Here is a clip of all the pupils from p1 to p7 joining in with the Up Helly Aa song. The Jarl commented how loud and enthusiastic our singing was. High praise indeed from a ‘King’!
