Today is South Mainland Up-Helly-Aa and we were lucky enough to get a visit from the Jarl and his squad. They even brought their galley for us to see. They all looked fantastic and performed a medley of songs as well as the famous Up-Helly-Aa song.

Bressay Up-Helly-Aa
Some of our pupils participated in the Bressay Up-Helly-Aa today and we were lucky enough to have a visit from the Jarl Squad. They entertained us with the Up-Helly-Aa song and showed us all the detail in their marvelous outfits. They looked and sounded great!
Sphero Coding
We were lucky enough to have Eleanor Hutcheon from UHI in our class yesterday. She introduced the class to Sphero Coding. This session taught pupils the concept of algorithms and how precise they need to be. Pupils explored maths concepts including speed/distance/time and angles to direct their Spheros where they wanted them to go.
Shetland Fishing Industry
We have been learning about the Shetland Fishing Industry in our topic work this week. We have learnt about the different pelagic, whitefish and shellfish fleets in Shetland. The pupils created some beautiful water colour paintings of their chosen fishing boat.
Shetland Dancing
P5A have been practicing Shetland dancing in their teacher led gym sessions. We have learnt a Boston Two Step and most recently, Strip the Willow. The pupils really enjoyed this high energy dance.
Topic – Stories of the Sea
P5A have been learning about Shetland fishing history in our Stories of the Sea topic. They learnt all about the Haaf Fishing, Arthur Anderson and the Herring Fishing industry. Here they are picking out key facts about Arthur Anderson for our display board aswell as designing our backgrounds for our topic wall.
Up-Helly-Aa Day!
We had a very exciting day on Up-Helly-Aa day. We enjoyed visits from the Jarl squad aswell as the Junior Jarl squad. They were in full voice and their outfits fantastic!
