Term 1 Human Body Topic

This term Primary 6 have been learning all about the Human Body as part of their class topic. Each week we focused on a different system and carried out practical investigations.

We started of looking at skeletons, how they change over time and the name of different bones, we combined this with looking at the joints and muscles and made our own model fingers demonstrating the hinge joint.

We then moved onto the nervous system and looked at our reaction times with the drop the ruler test. We calculated our average time over 3 tests. We looked at optical illusions and how our eyes react to changes in light and depending on emotions we feel. We then created out own optical illusions which are on display in school.

We researched our inherited and non inherited characteristics for a homework tasks and drew portraits of our future selves. We also investigated if height corresponded with age and used excel to show the results.

We then moved onto the respiratory system. We first of all looked at our resting and active heart rate and created graphs using data we gathered in PE and maths.

.

We then  made model lungs to demonstrate how the respiratory system works and silently matched all the cards together during our observed lesson with Mrs Tait. We completed the lung capacity experiment to see who in the class had the biggest lung capacity. We then used this data to make graphs in excel.

We then moved onto the digestive system which the class have enjoyed learning about the most. We first looked at how food is broken down by saliva in our mouths. The dry cracker experiment was a hit with the class!

We then investigated what happens to food once we have eaten it.

The class enjoyed the practical experiment demonstrating how our food is broken down into nutrients and waste products.

The class have made survey on Microsoft forms for P1-7 to see what snacks people enjoy and what healthy alternatives they would like to see on offer in school.  We will make graphs with the data collected next week. This project will continue into term 2.

The last area we will look at in this topic is the circulatory system next week.

Hope you enjoy reading this as much as we enjoyed learning about our topic!

Euro Quiz and End of Topic Celebration

10 pupils from P6 went to Lerwick to compete in the regional heats against P6 pupils from across Shetland. This was to try and win a place in the  Euro Quiz 2024 final . The class faced some tricky questions but both teams did extremely well with only 1 point between them for their final scores. We didn’t quite make the final this year but a fun day out had by all!

Back in school the rest of P6 spent the morning baking cookies and fudge. The also enjoyed melting chocolate over strawberries and marshmallows. This was part of our class topic investigating fairtrade foods. The class used a range of fairtrade products to bake with all pupils enjoying the treats at the end of the day.
