Snow White and the Teenie Tribe

Primary 6 and 7 have been rehearsing for the upcoming Snow White Pantomime.  The two classes have worked so well together, learning their lines and songs.  They have also been very interested in the process of putting on a show and many of their ideas have been incorporated into the performance.  Below are a few photos of our rehearsal last week

Last week, because all the costumes were ready, we had a photo shoot.  The pupils really embraced the challenge of acting their character in the photos.  The photos are displayed in the glass cabinet near the office and have proved a great talking point among staff, parents and pupils.

When you come to the Christmas shows, please take the time to have a look.  They are absolutely super.

We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday for our performances.

Term 1 Human Body Topic

This term Primary 6 have been learning all about the Human Body as part of their class topic. Each week we focused on a different system and carried out practical investigations.

We started of looking at skeletons, how they change over time and the name of different bones, we combined this with looking at the joints and muscles and made our own model fingers demonstrating the hinge joint.

We then moved onto the nervous system and looked at our reaction times with the drop the ruler test. We calculated our average time over 3 tests. We looked at optical illusions and how our eyes react to changes in light and depending on emotions we feel. We then created out own optical illusions which are on display in school.

We researched our inherited and non inherited characteristics for a homework tasks and drew portraits of our future selves. We also investigated if height corresponded with age and used excel to show the results.

We then moved onto the respiratory system. We first of all looked at our resting and active heart rate and created graphs using data we gathered in PE and maths.

.

We then  made model lungs to demonstrate how the respiratory system works and silently matched all the cards together during our observed lesson with Mrs Tait. We completed the lung capacity experiment to see who in the class had the biggest lung capacity. We then used this data to make graphs in excel.

We then moved onto the digestive system which the class have enjoyed learning about the most. We first looked at how food is broken down by saliva in our mouths. The dry cracker experiment was a hit with the class!

We then investigated what happens to food once we have eaten it.

The class enjoyed the practical experiment demonstrating how our food is broken down into nutrients and waste products.

The class have made survey on Microsoft forms for P1-7 to see what snacks people enjoy and what healthy alternatives they would like to see on offer in school.  We will make graphs with the data collected next week. This project will continue into term 2.

The last area we will look at in this topic is the circulatory system next week.

Hope you enjoy reading this as much as we enjoyed learning about our topic!

School trip to Lerwick

Last week the P5/6 class enjoyed a trip to Clickimin Broch, Sands of Sound beach and a fun afternoon spent in the pool after a heavy downpour of rain!

No pictures were allowed at the poolside however the class loved playing on the flumes, rapid river and conquering their fears jumping of the high diving board!  A fun day had by all.

Victorian day

This term P6 have been learning about the Victorians during their class topic. They enjoyed 5 weeks of drama lessons with Izzy based on the story the little match girl. It was great to see their dramatic side come to life. A good preparation for the pantomime next year.  For the last session we had a Victorian style school afternoon where the children had a handwriting, arithmetic, English, geography and math’s lesson all under Victorian school conditions. The class did a amazing job to stay in character and thoroughly the whole experience. Thank you Izzy!

Celebration of STEM

Some of the P6 class took part in the Shetland Celebration of STEM competition held at Mareel. P6/7 classes from all over Shetland brought their STEM projects to showcase their learning over the past term.

Scalloway entered two marble run teams and one STEM project team ‘Build a Bridge’

The class then had a chance to take part in a range of STEM challenges run by companies promoting these subjects. The competition was very high and unfortunately we didn’t win any of the top prizes but we came away with a fantastic experience and a bag of goodies. Well done P6

! 🙂

Euro Quiz and End of Topic Celebration

10 pupils from P6 went to Lerwick to compete in the regional heats against P6 pupils from across Shetland. This was to try and win a place in the  Euro Quiz 2024 final . The class faced some tricky questions but both teams did extremely well with only 1 point between them for their final scores. We didn’t quite make the final this year but a fun day out had by all!

Back in school the rest of P6 spent the morning baking cookies and fudge. The also enjoyed melting chocolate over strawberries and marshmallows. This was part of our class topic investigating fairtrade foods. The class used a range of fairtrade products to bake with all pupils enjoying the treats at the end of the day.

Term 3 in P6

P6  have been learning about Rainforests as part of their class topic. They have made models out of clay to show different food chains.

P6 have been learning about fairtrade products. They researched and compared prices during a math’s lessons.

After this the class used their budgeting skills to come up with a recipe they bake  in class using fairtrade products.

The P6 have been demonstrating their leadership skills by teaching P1 and P2 playground games during class PE time.

P6 joined P2 to help with laptop skills during  P2 topic lessons. Lots of pupils were excited to work with their older siblings.
