PE Update

Basketball Skills and Teamwork to Finish the Term

Over the last three weeks, our pupils have been enjoying a block of basketball lessons as we round off the term.

During these sessions, the children have been developing their core basketball skills, focusing on passing, dribbling and shooting. Through a variety of fun activities and games, they have had opportunities to practise these techniques before applying them in more competitive situations. This has allowed them to improve their confidence, decision-making and teamwork while enjoying the excitement of game play.

Alongside the physical skills, we have also continued to focus on the Significant Aspect of Learning Respect and Tolerance. Pupils have been encouraged to show respect for teammates, opponents and officials, while demonstrating tolerance by supporting one another, accepting different abilities and working positively together. These benchmarks have been an important part of every lesson and have helped create a positive and inclusive learning environment.

It has been fantastic to see the progress the children have made, both in their basketball abilities and in the way they work and interact with others. Well done to everyone for their effort, enthusiasm and sportsmanship throughout the block. 🏀👏

Lerwick Bid 28

We had a lovely visit from Bronwyn this morning to talk about the Lerwick 28 Bid. She wanted to gather ideas from P6a on what they would like to see if we got the £3,000,000 to spend on Lerwick. We spoke about what the word culture means and how this relates to Shetland and Lerwick. The class enjoyed sharing their ideas about what they already love about Lerwick and what they think could be done to improve it. What a fun morning, thanks Bronwyn!

Numeracy Week – Money Matters

The pupils enjoyed using a budget to plan a party for Finn Finity – the mascot for Maths Week Scotland. They had £60 to spend and had to plan a party for Finn and his 5 friends. They listed the items they wanted to buy, found the total and worked out how much money they had left. The pupils enjoyed sharing what they had chosen with the rest of the class.

Art Lesson

In art p6 have been learning about the European artist Pablo Picasso.

Having looked at and discussed his work, pupils have gone on to abstract shapes and proportions to create their own self-portrait in the style of Picasso.  They then combined coloured pencils and chalks render the portraits.

PE Update – Hockey

This term, we are focusing on invasion games, with hockey and basketball forming the main areas of learning. We began with a week of skills development to build the core attributes required for success in both sports. These included cooperation, dodging, weaving, attacking, defending, communication, and decision-making.

We then moved on to hockey. Throughout this block, pupils have been building their confidence in controlling the ball, passing accurately, and dribbling effectively. They have had regular opportunities to practise and refine these skills before applying them in fun, competitive games. As the unit progresses, pupils will continue to develop their teamwork, spatial awareness, and tactical understanding of the game.
