Sumburgh Head Trip

A big thank you to everyone at the Shetland Amenity Trust for making us so welcome on our trip this week!

We’ve spent a whole term learning about Shetland’s wildlife and sustainable tourism, so finishing with a trip to Sumburgh was a fantastic way to pull it all together!

We particularly loved watching the gannets dive, and getting to make the foghorn noise!

P4 trip to the 60:40

In our health and wellbeing time, the p4s walked down to the 60:40 for a session with the young sports leaders at the Anderson! They did a fantastic job being our teachers, and we hope they will have us back soon!

(Our p5s have their health and wellbeing with Mrs Moar, but they got to go last year!)

A visit from Rockpool Safari Shetland

A big thank you to Matt from Rockpool Safari Shetland, who visited our class today to answer questions about sustainable tourism. This week we will all be designing our own sustainable wildlife experience for visitors, so it was fantastic to get a chance to ask some questions to an expert!

Excellent listening skills, and some fantastic questions from the class.

Health and Wellbeing

Our health and wellbeing lessons look a little different this year!

On Friday afternoons we split into our year groups, rather than staying with our composite class.

P5 are taught by Mrs Moar, and P4 learn with Miss Nibet and me. It’s always lovely to spend time with our year group, and helps us maintain friendships with a wider range of peers.

Maths Week Scotland

For maths week we brought together our maths and topic learning and investigated the bird populations in Shetland.

We were concerned to learn how badly the bird flu affected some of our species, and how low our numbers of phalaropes are. The class are keen to send this information out to some important people, so we added some writing explaining more about what the data shows.

Who do you think we should share our data about Shetland’s wildlife with?

Teamwork makes the dream work!

We have been discussing the impacts of tourism on Shetland. We sorted these ideas into good things and bad things, and completed a diamond analysis to identify which impacts were the most important.

Fantastic job listening to each other, and respecting different people’s opinions!

Bird watching at the Sletts

We got so lucky with the weather today for our walk around the Sletts!

We were looking for different kinds of birds. This week we are focusing on classifying and identifying Shetland animals, so it was brilliant to be able to go out on a sunny day and put our learning into practice. We have been speaking about colours, size, location and behaviour to help us work out which birds we are looking at.

Lots of people enjoyed it so much they requested a copy of the sletts bird checklist to have a go with at home. Click the link if you want a digital copy too!
