Polar Regions

As part of our Hot and Cold climates topic this term, we are looking at Polar Regions. The children have been learning about the landscapes, climate and animals associated with both the Arctic and Antarctica.

The children have worked in pairs to make posters about each area.

The class worked together to create this display which includes animals and animal facts.

To further develop their ability to find out information, the Primary 3 and 4 children worked in pairs to research polar animals. They prepared a power point presentation and presented it to the whole class.

Hot Colours

Topic: Hot and cold Climates

This term our topic is all about hot and cold climates. As part of our learning we looked at the colour wheel to find hot and cold colours. We discovered that there are hot and warm colours such as red, yellow, orange and pink as well as cool and cold colours like green and blue.

We thought about all the things that hot colours made us think of – fire and the sun.

We looked at abstract ‘hot colour’ paintings and they reminded us of flames in a fire or of the sky at sunset.

We found some sunset pictures and spotted that the things in the foreground were in silhouette so we decided to make our own sunset pictures with hot country animals in silhouette.

We used strips of ‘hot colour’ tissue paper to make our sunsets and cut-outs of hot country animals to put in silhouette. We think our pictures turned out well. What do you think?

Co-operative Groups

We love working in our co-operative groups – they are a lot of fun! We are learning to co-operate and compromise this term.

Today we were making new Home Teams for this term. We had pieces of a jigsaw and had to find our groups by matching up each jigsaw before the music ran out. We had to work quickly!

Then we had to think about our favourite things – best place, favourite food, nicest fruit, best colour etc. If everbody liked the same things we wrote them in our ‘all’ section. Once we had finished we had to make up a Team Name using words from our ‘All’ list. We think our Team Names are fabulous this term! We have  groups called ‘The Banana Pizzas’, ‘ The Cosy Yellow Jumpers’ and ‘ The Blue Starfruit Beefburgers’

We were given 30 minutes to make a Team Flag.

Here we are busy at work.

Drumming

Today, P234 enjoyed their first session of African Drumming with Joy Duncan.

It was great to see Joy again and build on our learning. We talked about the names of the drums and learned some new drumming rhythms.

At the end of our session Joy let everyone ‘go bananas’, although she doesn’t have her banana anymore, so we went ‘oranges’ instead!

3D Shape

For numeracy we are looking at 3D shapes. We know 3D shapes are shapes with three dimensions, such as width, height and depth. Examples of 3D shapes are around us all the time, we could find cubes (dice), cones (cone people Christmas decorations), spheres (class footballs), and lots of cylinders (glue sticks, pens, water bottles and many more!)

We looked at examples of 3D shapes and guessed whether they could roll, stack or do both. We spoke about faces – how many and what shape they were. We then grouped objects according to what shape they were.

To finish off we decorated nets of cubes, cuboids and prisms with Christmas pictures to make gift boxes. We put a sweetie inside each one and we are taking them home to give to a special person.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas..

Here in Primary 2/3/4 we have been very busy making decorations, cards and gifts for Christmas.

We had great fun designing and decorating our classroom door. Our song was ‘Rockin Around The Christmas Tree’ and we put all of our pictures on springs so that when the door is opened we jiggle and dance!

Christmas Door

We also made Elf Calendars, Christmas cards and door hangers.

Cards and Hangers

Elf Calendars

We have also been listening to the story of the Nativity and we made some lovely ‘stained glass’ effect decorations.

We have also been rehearsing for our Christmas Concert and are very excited to perform next week.

Digital Literacy

We have been working hard on our digital literacy. We know how to create and open Word Documents and we have been learning how to insert a picture into our text. This week we made some fierce Wanted Posters using our skills. We had a lot to remember – we also had to save our work into our own folders on the Pool. Lots of hard work from P2/3/4 – here are a few examples:

STEM: Electricity

Following on from our Vaila’s Windy Day topic, P234 have been investigating electricity.

They worked in co-operative groups to construct simple circuits using batteries, bulbs, switches and buzzers. there was a lot of trial and error but every group achieved success and built their own circuit.

This led onto constructing a model of a windmill powered by electricity. Each group had to construct a windmill that housed their circuit and kept it hidden but allowed the windmill to be turned on and off using a switch. Each group achieved not only their goal, but also displayed very good social skills like teamwork, co-operation, turn taking, listening and encouraging each other.
