Stay and Play / Learn Event

On Friday 25th September we held a Stay and Play / Learn event. It was lovely to see so many family members attending. This was an opportunity for pupils to highlight the learning that has taken place so far this term and to show their progress. Pupils also had the chance to engage family members in play. This included the usual ‘activities’ setup and some additional activities, including stone painting, games in the gym hall and spaghetti towers.

Afterwards, the pupils were asked to share how they felt the event had gone. Some of the comments included:

  • “I really enjoyed it.”
  • “I liked showing Mam my work.”
  • “I want to do it again.”
  • “My favourite part was the stone painting.”
  • “I enjoyed the games in the games hall.”
  • “I liked making a spaghetti tower”
  • “I liked watching my Dad try to do a slam dunk in the gym hall.”

Some photos of the event have been added below.

Museum Visit – Topic

A couple of weeks ago, we had a visit from Mari from the Shetland Museum. She brought lots of old photos, maps and stories which linked to our topic on the local area. This was an excellent opportunity for the pupils to engage with the history of Nesting and to consider how things have changed. The pupils particularly enjoyed seeing familiar surnames on old records and having the chance to explore these sources afterwards.

Class Charter – Our School Community

This term we began by setting up a class charter. The first step to this was to look at the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) to allow the pupils to see what their rights are.

After a general discussion around this, the P5s and P7s got together to discuss and identify the rights they felt were most relevant for day to day life in the school. Following on from this, they shared this with the rest of the class who then voted and agreed on the final rights we would use in our charter.

The next step was to link these rights to actions for pupils and staff to take to ensure that these are being met. For example, the right to be heard led to the action of listening to others.

Once this had been decided, the pupils came to an agreement on how to display this. As we had also discussed the values within the school, it was decided to merge both the rights and values in one big display.

The pupils all made a character to represent them and staff were made by pupils too. Older learners wrote down the rights and actions onto clouds and everyone supported with decorating and pulling together the design.

After the charter was complete, all learners and staff signed this to show that we all agree to the actions that need to be taken.

A photo of the final charter can be seen below.
