Easter Excitement

This Easter has been super exciting. We have been decorating our own eggs and rolling them. We were rolling them to see who’s rolled the furthest and what one broke first!

We also baked our own Easter cookies and decorated them too.

Crafty Creations

We were all very excited when the craft table had lots of new materials out for us to work with. We have been exploring different ways to make things with different types of materials in Early years today. We have been so creative and are so proud of all our creations!

Sunflower Survival

In Early Years we have been able learning a lot about plants. We have learnt different parts of plants, different types of plants and what we need to grow our own plants.  We are excited to see how well our own individual sunflowers grow.  We have been doing experiments too, to see if plants really do need soil, sun and water to grow.

Whatever the Weather

We have been improving our outdoor area. We have been planning and taking action. We have been exploring our new mud kitchen and setting up our work bench.

Even though the weather hasn’t been the best we still manage to get outside. We can prepare for whatever weather comes our way.

Snow Creation Competition

The school and early years enjoyed the snow days last week. On Friday the school and early years joined together and were put into teams to create the best snow creation.

Feed the Birds

The weather has been getting a little bit better and we are starting to notice more signs that spring is on the way but some of the children have been wondering what the birds eat and if we can help them.

We had a talk about it at Together Time and when we were reading a book about spring at Story Time and we decided to make some bird feeders. It was a bit yucky making them and we liked some of the stuff we put in but definitely wouldn’t have liked it for our snack when it was all mixed up!

We put lots of different seeds in so that lots of different birds would like them, and put some juicy raisins in too as birds like to eat fruit and berries. The fat helps it to stick together and we know that fat is an important thing to eat when you are growing and the birds would need it to help them after the winter.

After leaving them in the fridge for a few nights to make sure they all stuck together then we talked again at Together Time about the best place to put them and then we headed out to find places! We had to put them up high so that the cats couldn’t get the birds while they were eating or maybe even steal some of their food, but we also wanted to put it where people in the school (and us if we sneak out and stay quiet!) can see the birds eating. We will check back on them after the weekend and hope that the birds like them.

Snow Days!

We have figured out how to add photos so we hope you enjoy looking at the fun we had out in the snow. We always try and get out even if it is cold so we are glad that everyone comes well wrapped up and with hats and sometimes even gloves.

Mrs Geddes took some paintbrushes out for us to play with and we made lots of marks in the snow with them. An ‘s’ is a good letter to try and some of us spoke about how it is easy to remember because it looks like a snake which starts with the same sound. Even though some of us know the name of the letter we always speak about the sound that it makes. So an ‘S’ is ‘ssssssssss’ and not ‘ess’ and an ‘A’ is ‘ah’ and not ‘ay’.

If anyone at home wants to ask the teachers more about this then please do – we don’t do lots of worksheets and written exercises in the nursery but we do learn lots through play and talk so we need to make sure that what we learn helps us when we go into P1. Letter sounds instead of names mean that reading and writing can be a bit easier. Mrs Thomson is really good at explaining more about it to everyone when children start in her class and she will be starting to visit much more over the next few terms so all of our older children know her well before moving over to the school.

“We were making ‘S’ in the snow!”

“That’s us all together for a photo.”

“We are making snow angels! It was so cold and wet.”

Mrs Geddes made snow angels too, then we all jumped on her!
