We have been looking at different sizes and measurements in Early Years recently – exploring different ways to measure things and grouping stuff into small and big or into a line in size order.
We have also been using our hands to count how tall we are – some of us have definitely been going through growth spurts recently so we may grow up to the next hand before the summer holidays!
Our sunflowers have been shooting up thanks to everyone remembering to water them and keep them in the sun. Lots of people wanted to find out who had the tallest sunflower and also to check that their one had been growing. We have measured them several times and they have definitely grown -some even needed straws to help support them by the time we measured last! We looked at a ruler first and tried to guess how tall our sunflower was, then used a piece of paper and ruler to measure them properly.
We always discuss what we are going to do first so that we can all come up with ideas for how to do it best and the children came up with the idea of using strip of paper to help us. Great thinking everyone!
There is always lots of talk using number and measuring words in free play but it has been good to see the bairns develop this further as a result of focusing on it. We have a foot measurer which tells you your shoe size which has been played with loads and we are now seeing the children make sure they put their foot or shoe right down at zero – and helping those who forget that this is the correct way to measure.
