Our School

Our school has two departments: the ELCC (Early Learning and Childcare Centre) and the Primary school. The aims and values of both departments are the same.
Our Aims and Values

In our school education is about our children experiencing the joy of discovery, solving problems, being creative, developing their self-confidence as learners and maturing socially and emotionally.

Curriculum Rationale

We aim to build on our strengths to serve the needs of our children using the skills of everyone in the school and wider community.  Learning and teaching are planned and managed so that children are supported and challenged at both the appropriate level and at the right time. We aim to give our children the foundations for future learning, and for success in an ever changing society. We have a strong partnership with parents and ensure that the school is at the heart of our community. We wish to create citizens who will flourish in a rural environment, but be ready for the challenges of socialising with their peers on other islands and the Shetland Mainland.

At Foula School we recognise and value parents as the first educator and aim to communicate effectively and work in partnership with them, other agencies and the wider community to enable our children to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.

To build our children’s social skills we have established strong links with other outer-island schools In Fetlar and Fair Isle and the Anderson Halls of Residence in Lerwick where our pupils live when they transfer to S1 in the Anderson High School. We are building links with other schools.

In summary:

We aim For working with Others, Understanding our Island, whilst Learning through many Activities.
