We held our sea themed Graduation for our preschoolers and they did us proud, as always. In the run-up they created lots of underwater creatures including angler fish, an orca, sea cucumbers, a crab, mermaids, a starfish, sea cucumbers, fish, a blue whale and Viking galleys to sail in the water. Before the ceremony, the bairns sang four songs – The Grumpy Sailor, The Unst Boat Song, Yellow Submarine and Oh I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside. We made a little speech for each of our preschoolers about their time in nursery and all their varied interests. There was a little surprise at the end that they kept secret until the big reveal. The preschoolers served out ice cream to their families and the rest of the nursery bairns. We invited the preschooler’s families through to nursery for a stay and play. It was lovely to see you all and the bairns took no time in heading around the nursery, showing off their favourite spots.
We had a brilliant day out on Tuesday. We started by heading to Bigton Farm where were met by Amy and she showed us the tractor shed. The bairns spotted the John Deere tractor right away and formed a line to climb up inside for a closer look. The bairns also took turns to sit on a quad and another tractor. Amy explained the different kinds of food for each animal. There were three pigs in the shed and the bairns fed them and chased the chickens. Then we headed outside to see the caddy lambs, accompanied by Ladd, the farm dog. We moved on to see cows grazing in the field and then tried to get up close to the ducks who were more interested in the hen’s food. The bairns met Light, the Shetland pony before heading back inside the shed for a game of Farm Bingo. After a quick walk to the Bigton playpark, the bairns explored the area, climbing, sliding, balancing and taking turns on the swings.
We hopped back on the bus and headed to the Levenwick Hall where we had a packed lunch of sandwiches, bananas and yoghurts. The community garden behind the hall was our next stop. The bairns noticed the “mountain” straight away and began climbing to the top. They also made the way under the greenery to find a hiding place among the flowers.
Then it was back on the bus to Sandwick and the Hoswick burn. The bairns tested the depth of the water and there were a few wet feet! We also took a trip to the Hoswick playpark, where we had a quick snack before exploring the area.
Our end of term party was held at the Cunningsburgh Village Club. The bairns made the most of the soft play equipment, making as much noise as possible too! Then it was time for some party games. We started with a summer version of Duck Duck Goose which the bairns renamed Sand Sand Sea. They changed up Pass the Parcel to Pass the Ice Cream. The bairns had decided to have Musical Sandcastles and made their own. We finished off with a catchy game named Flush the Toilet.
The bairns visited the sheltered houses with a peerie packet of a tea bag and biscuit. We wished the residents a happy summer. We also made a delivery to Mr Clark and Janis on our way back to nursery for lunch.
We had a visit from Mr Stripey who delivered ice creams following a generous donation. The bairns enjoyed their tubs with a film.
Here is a selection of our play and learning for the rest of the week. We had a visit from a beautiful brand new baby and made Mrs Malcolmson shed a tear with an early Birthday gift.
Happy Summer Holidays! We hope you all have a brilliant time and hopefully the sun will shine. It’ll be great to welcome you back from Wednesday 14 August.
